Since Greek actors are all men, they wear lightweight mask in order them to easily
change characters. The mask made their portrayal of female roles more believable. Thus,

Music - uses the chorus at the beginning of the play to help tell the audiences the given
circumstances of the play. Chorus did a lot of lamenting of terrible events,
Costumes - Men wore loose floor length poncho with pleated shoulder while females wore
draped robes.
Staging - The Parthenon’s facade has the design of Ionic columns with cornice and
moulding on the top, and elevated by 5 step-Rises at the center and has a platform in front
near the audience.

Renaissance is known for a period of rebirth. One of the famous playwright during
this period was William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s most famous
tragedy and one of the world’s most enduring love stories. William stories, William
Shakespeare’s early plays were mostly histories written in the early 1590’s.

Staging for Romeo and Juliet

Divided into three levels:

1. A main stage area with doors at the rear and a curtained area at the back for
discovery scenes
2 An upper, canopied area called “heaven” for balcony scene
3. An area under the stage called “hell” which could be accessed through a trap door
in the stage

Props - vary depends on the scene .There is a greater impact and satisfaction not only to
the audiences but also to the performers in using the innovations in the play.
