• Checklists – simple approach for identifying progress against key elements of a task or process
that have already been
• Environment risk register – listing potential environmental hazards in work area can be part
of risk assessment strategy, apply risk management protocols to determine appropriate control
mechanisms
• Performance reporting-reports of actual performance against KPIS, benchmarks or other
criteria are used during executive meeting to decide on actions for staff.
• Quality assurance systems- ISO accreditation refers to common standards defined by the
international organisation and measures business performance and compliance with external
quality system
9. Give a description for each of the aspects you should consider when communicating about
environmental sustainability:
WHO – Who are you communicating with, informed in a group meeting or written memo and
what level of language.•
WHAT – What is the purpose of the message you are sending•
HOW – How should you send the message, what equipment needed
•WHERE – Where is the location
•WHY – What is in it for them, explain the need to change and the bene
Q 10 Which factors would you need to analyses to measure the efficacy of the following
resources?
Answer
• Energy- Gas and electricity used by the business in heating and cooling, hot water heating,
lighting, air conditioning, running office equipment and commercial equipment such stoves.
• Goods- Review the goods used in your products and services. Consider transport and water
and energy use in their production.
• Packaging- Consider how much packaging is used in both supplies delivered to the
organisation and products shipped out of the orgenisation.
• Waste- Waste can be paper based recyclable, commingled recyclable, food waste, general
waste.
• Water- Used for cleaning, laundering toilets, showers, gardening washing vehicles.
Q 11. What are the efficiency ratings for appliances using water and/or energy? How do these
work?
Answer
Energy rating is simply a way to calculate and demonstrate how energy-efficient an appliance is,
based on how much energy it uses. The energy ratings are working on the star system. The
more stars, the more energy / gas / water-efficient the appliance is. If you equate two devices
with the same stars, look at the numbers on the energy rating tab. The lower the numbers, the
greater the sum of energy / money you save
The water quality rating label displays the efficiency rating in the blue band at the top of the
label and can range between 1 and 6 stars. The more stars, the more water-efficient the
appliance, the less water it will use, and the less water you'll pay for.
Q12 List 6 areas the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Green Globe Program
recommends
that accommodation operations should address:
answer
1. Freshwater and wastewater control
2. Building design
3. Energy conservation
4. Land use
Q 13. Provide an example for each of the following types of impact on the environment:
Answer
For example, the increase in ambient air SO2 due to stack emissions may be deposited on land
as SO4 and cause acidic soils. Another example of indirect impact is the decline in water quality
due to an increase in the temperature of water bodies receiving cooling water discharge from
the nearby industry.
Q 14. Provide 5 suggestions for how an organisation could make improvements to water
usage:
Answer
1. Organization- institute appropriate purchasing policies for equipment
use construction materials with low requirements
use rain water tanks
2. housekeeping – install tap flow controls
use sensor or push button
modify cleaning processes to use less water
Q 17. What are the likely impacts from waste on the environment?
Answer
Waste disposal has major environmental effects and can cause serious problems. Resorts are
good examples for studying environmental impacts, as they often cover all aspects of TH&E
with bars, restaurants, guest room, tour sails and on site.
Q 18. List the 4 most common causes of waste in the TH&E industry:
Answer
Q 20. List 6 hazardous substances that are found commonly in TH&E businesses:
Answer
1. Cleaning products
2. Office products
3. Pool chemicals
4. Gardening chemicals
5. Asbestos
6. Paint and varnish
Q 21. List 6 examples for improving land use and building design to reduce energy
consumption and
enhance sustainability:
answer

Q 26. Once energy, water and waste usage have been analyzed, the results should be
compared with
industry standards or best practice models. Provide examples where you could access
information for benchmarks in the T&H industry:
answer
A planned approach to benchmarking helps create a more viable and usable benchmarking
system. The plan should determine the purpose for the benchmarking program and the
intended audience for the program results. It is important to identify the metrics necessary for
communicating the results appropriately and recognizing the data needed to produce those
results. The plan should evaluate the roles of the benchmarking team members, how the data
will be collected, and how the plan will be implemented.
The following steps provide a framework for designing a benchmarking plan:

Q 27. Efficiency targets should be set following the SMART principle. What does the acronym
SMART
stand for?
Answer
SMART stands for
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic/Relevant
Time Bound
Q 28 Provide 4 suggestions for how staff can be actively involved in achieving improved
environmentally sustainable outcomes:
answer
define the company’s long term purpose
spell out the economic case for sustainability
create sustainability knowledge and competence
make every employee a sustainability champion
