Romeo and Juliet is the creation of the play Romeo and Juliet from 1595. The plot
is based on an Italian tale that Arthur Brooke translated into verse in 1562 as The
Tragic Story of Romeo and in prose in 1567 as The Palace of Joy of William the
Painter. The title characters stand in a tradition of tragic romanticism that goes
back to antiquity. [Sources: 7, 11]

The earliest performance of Romeo and Juliet took place in 1597, when the first
quartet was published. The earliest date is believed to be the earliest in
Shakespeare's spelling for the play. The later date allows the necessary time for
the compilation of the manuscript with which the first Bad Quotto was printed in
early 1597. The play is closely linked to a group of plays from the period 1594-
1595: Love and Work, A Lost Midsummer Night's Dream and Richard II. [Sources: 7]
Shakespeare's sources Shakespeare knew the story of Romeo and Juliet in several
versions in the years before he wrote his plays. It was assumed that Richard
Burbage played Romeo and that the boy actor Robert Goffe was Juliet. There are no
recorded performances before the restoration in 1660, so it is likely that Romeo
was played by the Chamberlains behind the theatre curtain. [Sources: 7]

The story of a star-spangled lover and a family determined to keep him apart is one
of Shakespeare's best-known and most beloved plays. The play, set in an
extraordinary world, has become the quintessence of young love. Matthew Shilvock of
San Francisco Opera wrote the Charles Gounod opera based on Shakespeare's love
story. [Sources: 2, 6, 9]

The very word "Romeo" has become a synonym for the male lover in English, and the
idea of a doomed romantic lover who reconciles with his warring families after
death is famous all over the world. The play has been adapted for stage, film,
musical, opera and radio several times. The last film was released in 2013.

Many minor characters who are important to the play are introduced, such as Romeo's
friend Benvolio, who is thoughtful and pragmatic but afraid of the law, and Julie's
cousin Tybalt, a hothead who hates peace but is particularly strong in his hatred
of the Montagues. [Sources: 1]

The play was only returned in 1845 in the United States with the sisters Susan and
Charlotte Cushman as Juliet and Romeo and 1847 in Great Britain at the Samuel
Phelps Sadler Wells Theatre. Garrick's slightly modified version of the play was
popular and ran for a century. For example, Garrick's version transferred the
language that describes Rosaline and Julia, heightened the idea of fidelity, and
downplayed the theme of love at first sight. [Sources: 11]
