Evolution of solid

waste management

MARFIAH AB.WAHID, PHD.

FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
UITM SHAH ALAM
Lesson Plan
At the end of this topic , student should be able to :
• Understand the past and current situation related with solid waste
management in Malaysia
• Explain the policy related with solid waste management in Malaysia.
• Discuss a few important questions arise related with solid waste
management.
Introduction
• Solid wastes comprise all wastes arising from human and animal
activities that are normally solid and that are discarded as useless or
unwanted.
• It include Heterogeneous material Such that those come from urban
community and homogeneous material such that material come from
agricultural, industrial and mineral communities.
• Discuss the conventional way of SWM in village and urban area. What
are the problems created from current activity? Village (burning
waste or tanam-air pollution), urban (landfill – risk health)

D
• Although nature has the capacity to dilute,
disperse, degrade, absorb, or otherwise
reduce the impact of unwanted residues in the
atmosphere, in the waterways and on the
land, ecological imbalances have occurred
where the natural capacity had been
exceeded.
Rate of waste generation in Malaysia is increasing
due to:
1) Community activities : commercial,
institutional, industrial, markets.
2) Economic level of different sector – squatter,
low, medium and high class residential areas.
3) Type of waste generator and land use.

QUESTIONS
• Which elements of society generate the greatest quantities of S.W
and what is the nature of these wastes?
• How can the quantities be minimized?
• How to manage waste in sustainable approach in order to reduce the
