SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT #1: REFLEXIVITY PAPER

The pandemic COVID-19 and with such crisis exposed different problems in the
Philippines as well as issues that depicts the weaknesses and loopholes in our
economy and different sectors in our country.

There are two main issues that I have determined, first is the incompetency of
our industry in producing PPEs (mask, gloves, medical suit, etc.) and some medical
apparatus to support medical health practitioners in combating the disease and for
aiding the Persons Under Investigation (PUI) and positive patients. This issue only
proves lack of our country in resources to produce materials or products and tend to rely
on the exportations of materials needed from other countries.

Second issue is lack of support of our government in scientists and

technologists needed for generating projects and innovation for the COVID-19. One
example is the students from University of the Philippines and other school that
generate test kits for patients but was disregarded and set aside but rather did support
more the foreign materials than ours. This maybe because of the complications and
riskiness that the health organizations face but then at least we could take this
phenomenon an opportunity for innovation-driven development of our country.
Moreover, this only delineate that we are not investing enough resources in science and
technology (S&T) human resource development, research and development (R&D), and
physical infrastructures.

The Philippines is still not ready for the Industrial Revolution and remains
incompetent. As a result, we suffer from low industrial and agricultural productivity,
overall inefficiency, and a meager output of knowledge products, such as scientific
publications, patents, and innovations. Thus, without Science, Technology and
Innovation (STI): we will not be competitive; we will continue to suffer great damage
from natural disasters, environmental degradation and climate change; and we will
continue to be poor. I hope that this disaster widens our scope of development and
opens an avenue for aiding these issues.
