While sleeping, head should face which direction ?

Which direction
you sleep? Do you know the consequences?

The direction your head faces while sleeping has a strong effect on your
physical and mental well-being. Head placement refers to the direction the
top of your head points when lying down.

Art of Sleeping

We are advised to avoid sleeping with our head to the north or west.

We all know that our planet has a magnetic pole stretched from north to
south with the positive pole at the north and the negative pole at the
south. Now, health scientists tell us that we too have a similar magnetic
stretch with the positive pole at the head and the negative one at the feet.

It is common knowledge that like poles repel and unlike poles attract not
only scientific but also in social spheres. When we lay our heads on the
north side, the two positive sides repel each other and there is a struggle
between the two.

Since the earth has a greater magnetic force, we are always the losers, and
rise in the morning with headache or heaviness.

. But when we lay our heads in the southern direction, there is mutual
attraction and we wake up fit, fresh and free, unless afflicted by some
illness.

We also know that our planet revolves itself from west to east, and sun's
magnetic field enters earth from east side. This magnetic force enters our
head if we lie with head on the east and exits through feet, promoting cool
heads and warm feet as per the laws of magnetism and electricity. When
the head is laid towards the west, cool feet and hot head -- result -- an
unpleasant start for morning.

Now we may realize why the ancient people said, that our intellect
improves by east facing head or house, and life lengthens with the head
facing south.
North brings disease and west dulls the brain. They gave us a few more
healing hints for a healthy sleep. Never lie on one side for long. Keep
changing.

Conclusion:

Head to East

Benefits: Auspicious. Always make sure you put your head in the East
direction as much as possible.

Avoid daytime sleep. Let the night food be light and early. Drink milk with
honey.

Avoid reading serious or sensual literature straining the nerves. Repeat a

few mantras to relax your mind before you sleep.

Head to South

Benefits: Auspicious. The best position for sleeping is with the top of your
head pointing to the south and feet pointing north.

Head to North or West

Results: Dangerous. Never sleep with the top of your head pointing to the
north and feet pointing to the south. Brings terrible dreams and disturbed
sleep. You will feel miserable. Irritability, frustration and emotional
instability will develop. It sucks your positive vibrations while you sleep.
You will lose 50% of your willpower and your soul power will not increase
while you sleep. Your physical and mental health will suffer.

Effect of going to sleep with feet facing West

1. Introduction to going to sleeping with feet facing West

In this article on how to sleep well, we study the effect of sleeping with
our feet facing the West direction. This study about how to sleep well is
entirely from the spiritual perspective. It will help us take an educated
decision about how to sleep well from the perspective of the direction of
our feet when we sleep.

1.1 Spiritual research into how to sleep well – effect of sleeping with our
feet facing West

Seekers of SSRF having advanced sixth sense or extrasensory perception

(ESP) did spiritual research into different sleep positions. They sought to
find out the effect of sleeping with our feet facing the West, and the best
direction to sleep in. The Divine Knowledge that they received about the
effect of sleeping with our feet facing the West, and the best direction to
sleep in, was verified by H. H. Dr. J. Athavale.

2. Spiritual effect of sleeping with the feet facing West

2.1 Benefit of the frequencies of Action of God

The frequencies of Action (kriyā-laharī) of God are aligned in the East-West

direction. Their movement is in the space between these two directions. By
sleeping with our feet facing West, we get higher benefit of these
frequencies of Action of God. They give us strength to perform our actions.

2.2 Activation of the five vital energies (pancha-prāṇ) in the body

Due to the transfer of the frequencies of Action in the body, the five vital
energies situated at the level of the navel are activated. These five vital
energies throw out the subtle excretory gases from the body through the
medium of the sub-vital energies. This helps in the purification of the vital
energy body and the sheath of the vital energy body. This makes the
person invigorated.

2.3 Benefit of the sāttvik frequencies

At dawn sāttvik frequencies (apart from the above-mentioned) are

transmitted from the East direction. These sāttvik frequencies from the
atmosphere enter our body easily from the Brahmārandhra of the Kunḍalinī
system when we are sleeping with our feet facing West, as our head then
faces East. Brahmārandhra is the opening above the 7th Kunḍalinī chakra,
i.e. the Sahasrār-chakra. By imbibing these sāttvik frequencies we too
become sāttvik. Thus we begin the day with higher sāttvikā. Hence to
begin the day on the highest positive note, we should sleep with our feet
facing the West.

2.4 Clockwise motion of the body cycle

Apart from frequencies of Action (kriyā-laharī) of God and the sāttvik

frequencies at dawn, the pleasant sapta-tarang (lit. seven-ripple)
frequencies come from the East direction. When we sleep with our head in
the Eastward direction, we derive maximum benefit from these sapta-
tarang frequencies. Due to their influence our body cycle moves in the
clockwise, i.e. desired, direction. As a result, all body functions are
optimised. The body cycle is the subtle intangible system of all gross and
subtle body functions.

2.5 Relief from sleep-associated Raja-Tama particles

When we sleep with our feet facing the West, as our head is in the
Eastward direction, 10% more sapta-tarang frequencies are imbibed by
the seven Kunḍalinī chakras. As the chakras influenced by the sapta-tarang
frequencies move in the clockwise direction, the person gets benefit at a
spiritual level. Hence one does not experience distress from the subtle
basic Raja-Tama particles generated in the body due to the sleeping state.
Thus one sleeps well.

3. In summary
From the above explanation we can see that from the perspective of how
to sleep well, the East-West direction with the feet facing the West is the
best direction to sleep in.

Sleeping with feet facing south - a spiritual perspective

1. Introduction to sleeping with feet facing South

In this article series about saattvik living pertaining to various aspects of

how to sleep well, we are looking at various parameters of how to sleep
well. In this article we will study the effect of sleeping with our feet facing
the South direction. This study into how to sleep well is entirely from the
spiritual perspective. It will help us take an educated decision about how
to sleep well from the perspective of the direction of our feet when we
sleep.

1.1 Spiritual research into how to sleep well – effect of sleeping with our
feet facing the South

The effect of sleeping with our feet facing the South from the perspective
of how to sleep well was investigated at a spiritual level by seekers of
SSRF having advanced sixth sense or extrasensory perception (ESP). The
divine knowledge that they received was verified by His Holiness Dr.
Athavale.

2. Spiritual effect of sleeping with feet facing South

2.1 Increase in activity of the downward and tiryak frequencies

There are various frequencies inherently present in the atmosphere. Their

presence and flow is predominant in certain directions. When our body is
aligned with the direction of their flow we enter their field and are
influenced more than when we are not in their field. Among these
frequencies are 2 distressing or negative types of frequencies. One is the
downward flowing frequencies that go towards the region of Hell (Paataal)
and the other is a type of frequencies known as the tiryak frequencies.
Tiryak literally means skewed. As these frequencies are skewed, they
cause distress. Both these frequencies move in the southern direction.
Hence this direction is charged with these frequencies.

When we sleep with our feet facing the South direction, our body is most
exposed to the activity of the downward frequencies as well as tiryak
frequencies. This increases the activity of the subtle basic raja-tama
particles inside as well as outside the body. This increased activity of the
subtle basic raja-tama component aids the activity of the ghosts (demons,
devils, negative energies, etc.). Thus we are most at risk of being affected
or possessed by ghosts.

2.2 Increased flow of vibrations from the region of Death (Yamaloka) and
region of Hell (Paataal)

The South direction is associated with the region of Death (Yamaloka), the
subtle basic raja-tama frequencies and distress. When we sleep with our
feet facing the South direction the vibrations from the Yamaloka (region of
Death) and Paataal (region of Hell) join together.

Due to this we attract the subtle basic raja-tama frequencies or ghosts.

Due to the combined effect of the above when we sleep with our feet
facing the South, we can suffer distress in the form of difficulty in falling
asleep, nightmares, feeling scared in sleep or waking up in fear.

3. In summary

Thus from the perspective of how to sleep well, it is important to take into
account the direction of our bed when planning the layout of the house.
Even when we are camping outside or in hotels or in someone else’s house
it is best to take care that we do not sleep with our feet facing the South.
In the following articles in this series in how to sleep well, we will consider
the effect of sleeping with our feet facing the other directions.

How to sleep well - sleep posture

1. Introduction

Each one of us would like to know how to sleep well so that we get up
well-rested. A number of factors are involved in how to sleep well. One of
the factors is our sleep posture. We all have a typical sleep posture and we
feel comfortable when we sleep in that sleep posture. We are aware that
there are implications of our sleep posture from a physical health point of
view. Also there are many psychological explanations of the sleep
postures. In this article, we will explain how to sleep well from a spiritual
perspective. We will focus on which is the best sleep posture to sleep well
and why. We will explain what actually happens in the subtle dimension
with each sleep posture, so that we can make an educated decision on how
to sleep well and which is the sleep posture to achieve that.

At the outset we have to understand that

 From a spiritual perspective, sleep is basically a state most related

to the subtle basic Tama component. That means, during sleep the
subtle basic Tama component in our body gets heightened.
 Coupled with this, as our spiritual practice is also at its lowest
during sleep, we are spiritually most vulnerable when we sleep. As a
result, when we sleep, we are more susceptible to attacks by ghosts
(demons, devils, negative energies, etc.)

We also need a basic understanding of the Kunḍalinī energy system of the

body.

The Kunḍalinī is the inherent spiritual energy system in the body. It

consists of 7 main centres or chakras, 3 main channels - the Sun Channel
(Right channel or Pingalā-nāḍī), the Moon channel (Left channel or Iḍā-
nāḍī) and Central channel (Sushumnā-nāḍī) and innumerable ducts and
ductules.
The below diagram is a representation of the dormant Kunḍalinī energy
system in a human being.

Also refer to the diagram of the chakras in relation to the physical body

The energy for the bodily and mental functions flows through the Sun and
Moon Channels. The energy flowing through the Central Channel
(Sushumnā-nāḍī ) is related to spiritual growth.
The Sun Channel (Pingalā-nāḍī) is Raja predominant, whereas the Moon
Channel (Iḍā) is Sattva predominant. The energy flows alternately through
the Iḍā and Pingalā. This shift happens every 3-4 minutes. Even though the
energy flow changes so often, as the Iḍā and Pingalā cross sides across the
body, both parts of the body receive adequate energy of each type. This
maintains a balance between the 2 types of energy flows.

During the changeover from the Sun to the Moon channel, the Central
Channel gets activated very briefly for 1-2 seconds in people with lower
spiritual level. This is negligible from the perspective of any benefit derived
from the activated Central Channel. With increasing spiritual level, the
duration of activation of the Central Channel increases. Above 55%
spiritual level, the duration of activation lasts for more than 1-2 minutes.
When it lasts this long, some benefit results in terms of spiritual growth.

The activation of the channels also depends on the sleep posture. The
channel opposite to the side we are sleeping on gets activated
predominantly. When one sleeps on the back, the Central channel
(Sushumnā) gets activated in people above the 55% spiritual level. In
people below this level, no channel is activated.

The activation of the Sun or Moon Channel can also be as per the
requirement of the body. For example, after our meals the Sun channel is
predominantly activated to facilitate digestion of food.

Also when there is a surge of emotions, the Sun channel is activated. When
the emotions subside, the Moon channel gets activated. However, when
there are rapid and frequent vacillations in the emotional state, there is a
rapid and irregular shift in activation of the two channels as the Sun
channel remains predominantly activated. As a result, there is an
imbalance in the two types of energy flows (Raja and Sattva). In an
emotional person, this roller coaster of emotions continues even in sleep in
the sub-conscious mind. This is because the impressions in the sub-
conscious mind are active even in sleep.

Refer to the tutorial - The spiritual nature of the mind.

2. Sleep posture 1 - sleeping on the back

When we sleep on our back

 - The chētanā (the aspect of

Divine Consciousness that governs
the functioning of the mind and
body) in the cells of our body
becomes unmanifest and dormant.
 - Our body is most exposed to the
Region of Hell (Pātāl), as a major
portion of the body is directed
towards the floor.

Due to the combined effect of the above

two factors, the body cells are unable to
repel the attacks by distressing
vibrations from the Region of Hell
(Pātāl))

However, the effect of this sleep posture

differs as per the spiritual level of the person.

^ Top

Scenario 1: Spiritual level below 55%

In a person below the 55% spiritual

level, the extent of emotions is quite high
compared to his spiritual emotion
(bhāv)). Due to this, there are frequent
and rapid vacillations between the
channels. Hence, there is a constant
imbalance in the energy flows from the Sun (Right Channel or Pingalā) and
Moon (Left Channel or Iḍā) channels of the Kunḍalinī energy system in the
body.
As explained above, when a person below the 55% spiritual level takes a
sleep posture of lying on his back, his Central Channel is not activated.
However, because of his emotional nature there is an imbalanced flow of
energy to the body. The imbalance between the two energy flows of the
Sun and Moon Channels can effect a rapid transfer of subtle basic Raja-
Tamacomponents in the body from the surrounding atmosphere. When
there is an increase in the subtle basic Raja-Tama components, a person
runs a higher risk of being attacked by distressing vibrations from the
Regions of Hell (Pātāl)). However, once one has progressed spiritually to
the level of unmanifest spiritual emotion, one can control the energy flows.
Till such time, it is best to avoid sleeping on one’s back where there is
maximum exposure of the body to the ground, and thereby to the Regions
of Hell (Pātāl)).

Remedy: However, for some reason if one does need to sleep on the back,
the risk of distress can be reduced by using spiritual remedies like lighting
a sāttvik incense stick, like the SSRF incense stick, near the bed before
going to sleep, keeping a picture of God under the pillow, spiritual
purification of the bedroom, especially near the bed, playing the chant of
Name of God in a very low volume throughout the night, etc.

Scenario 2: Spiritual level above 55%

When a person above 55% spiritual level

sleeps on his back, his Central Channel of Kunḍalinīsystem is activated. The
spiritual emotion (bhāv) of this person is quite high; whereas the influence
of emotions is quite reduced. When one is above the 55% spiritual level,
one attains control on the flow of the subtle basic Raja-Tama in the body
as per the requirement. This happens at the level of one’s unmanifest
spiritual emotion (bhāv). This is because one starts functioning more and
more at the level of the Energy of Soul (ātma-shakti). This is opposed to
the level of Energy of Mind in the case of people below the 55% spiritual
level. This Energy of Soul maintains the balance between the Sun and the
Moon channels of the Kunḍalinī system.

3. Sleep posture 2 - sleeping on the stomach

When a person sleeps on his stomach,

there is pressure on the spaces in his
abdomen. This pressure instigates the
downward flow of the subtle excretory
gases in the abdominal spaces.
Sometimes when the proportion of these
subtle excretory gases is high in the
chest, they move in the upward direction
too and exit out of the body through the
nose and mouth. During the course of
this dispelling of the subtle excretory gases, the body is highly sensitive to
absorbing the frequencies of subtle basic Raja-Tama components from the
external environment. When one is sleeping in this posture, the
movements of the actual body organs are slowed and the spaces around
the organs are activated because of the pressure of the subtle excretory
gases. Due to this, the process of excretion of subtle excretory gases
excreted from the organs and filled in the spaces is hastened. During this
period the person's body is hypersensitive to the process of transmission
of the subtle basic Raja-Tama components at the subtle level. As a result,
the person is vulnerable to attacks by ghosts from the environment as well
as from the Regions of Hell (Pātāl).

4. Sleep posture 3 - sleeping on the sides

When a person sleeps on his side, the Sun or Moon channels of
the Kunḍalinī system are predominantly activated.

 The Sun channel is activated when a person sleeps on his left side.
 The Moon channel is activated when a person sleeps on his right
side.

When the Sun or Moon channels are activated, the chētanā in the body
cells remains activated. As a result, there is a lower level of the subtle
basicTama component generated and the chētanā also helps fight the
attacks from ghosts.

5. In summary

From a spiritual perspective, unless one is above the 55% spiritual level, it
is best to sleep on one's sides.

Best Directions for Sleep – Vastu view

In order to get a peaceful and effective sleep, it is important to sleep in the

right directions.

Vastu principles suggest that a person should sleep with his head facing
the South direction.

Here is a vastu principle which is also scientifically accepted. Our body can
be considered as a magnet with the head representing its magnetic north
and feet representing its magnetic south. When one sleeps with head in
South, magnetic fields from the head go towards to south of the earth and
enters from the earth's north to the feet thereby forming a magnetic loop.
This happens because in Magnetic theory, Opposites attracts and Likes
Repel each other.

While when a person sleeps with his head facing the north, magnetic field
of the body and earth are not in harmony and this results in the disturbed
blood circulation resulting in mental unrest and a disturbed sleep.

If due to the organization of the house, you are not able to sleep facing the
south, then the best direction to sleep is East followed by West. Never ever
sleep with your head towards to North.
Which direction you should sleep?

“Begin the day with love,

fill the day with love,
spend the day in love and
end the day with love.
This is the only way to God.”

Swami Buaji Maharaj

Swami Buaji Maharaj is a hundred and

twenty two years old yogi,
who is also the founder of the Indo -
American Yoga-Vedanta Society in New
York.

“Never lie down to sleep with your head northward or westward”

is a common injunction given from time immemorial by the Indian
mother to her children. Almost every Hindu - orthodox or
heterodox- observes this dictum of his ancestors, but he doesn’t
know the rationale or significance behind the dictum, although it
has been handed down to him through generations. For example,
Vishnu Purana says: “O King! It is beneficial to lie down with the
head placed eastward or southward. The man who lies down with
his head placed in contrary directions becomes diseased.” The
Varshaadi Nool says: “Sleeping eastward is good; sleeping
southward prolongs life; sleeping westward and northward brings
ruin.” The Mahabharata says: “Men become wise by sleeping
eastward and southward.” There are two Tamil proverbs which run
thus: “Vaaraatha Vashvu Vanthaalum Vadakkae Thalai
Vaikkakkuudathu”, meaning; ” Even in the heyday of sudden
fortune, one should not lie down with head to the north”, and ”
Vidakkeiyayinum Vadakkaakaathu”, meanin g: “Even the head of
the dried fish should not be placed northward.” The Ayurvedic
physician seats his patients facing eastward before diagnosing the
disease or administering his medicine. Brides and bridegrooms are
always seated facing eastward on the wed ding day. Even corpses
are placed down with the head southward.

The explanation for such advice and practice as discovered

recently is as follows: This dear Earth, on which we live, has been
for ages past, and is still being subjected to constant exposure to
the source of all Energy-Heat, Light, Electricity and Magnetism - the
Sun. When its eastern half is heated by the sun, its western half
remains comparatively cold. In consequence, a strong and constant
current of thermal electricity generated by the sun, travels across
the earth from east to west. By this current of electricity the earth
becomes magnetized, and its geographical north pole, being to the
right-hand side of the direction of the current, is made the
magnetic north pole; and its geographical s outh pole, being to the
left-hand side of the same current, is made the magnetic south
pole. Thus the earth is rendered a mighty thermo -electric magnet.
This is evident from the fact that by the attractive and repulsive
forces of its poles, the compass nee dle, in whatever position it is
placed, is invariably turned so as to point to the North and the
South.

We have learnt inside the class rooms that a non -magnet kept in
contact with a magnet is eventually converted into a magnet, or
that magnetism is imparted to it. And that the poles of the magnet
have infused opposite polarity into the ends of the non -magnet.
Now, we human beings are in perpetual contact with the huge
Electro-Magnet, the Earth. We are all therefore converted into
small magnets. It has been found by the experiments that the
human body also is a magnetable object, though far inferior to iron
or steel. This cannot be denied that, for in addition to other
causes, there is a large percentage of iron in the blood, circulating
through the body.

Further, as our feet are magnetized by

contact with the northern hemisphere of the
earth, where exist all the properties of north
polarity is induced in our feet, and
consequently, north polarity is induced in our
head.

It has been found by the experiments that

the human body also is a magnetable object,
through far inferior to iron or steel. This cannot be denied that, for
in addition to other causes, there is a large percentage of iron in
the blood, circulating through the body.

At school when experimenting with magnets we have seen :

“Unlike poles attract each other; like poles repel.” We used to
restore the magnets back to their place in the laboratory with their
unlike poles in contact, so that the polarity may not be destroyed.
Now, it is very easy to conceive that if you lie down with your head
placed southward and feet northward, the South Pole of the earth
and your head, which is the North Pole of the human magnet, as
also the North Pole of the Earth and your feet, which is the South
pole of your body, being juxta-position, will attract each other,
thus the polarity of the human body, natural to it, will be
preserved; which if you lie with your head placed northward and
feet southward, the like poles of your body and the Earth being in
the juxta-position, will repel each other, and thereby the natural
polarity of your body will be destroyed or its intensity diminished.
In the former position, the polarity acquired by the human body
during the day by standing, walking or sitting on the ground, is
preserved intact at night during sleep; but in the later position, the
acquired polarity is seriously tampered with and destroyed. This
arrangement of the poles in the human body is natural to it, and
therefore conducive to our health and happiness. The body enjo ys
perfect heath, if the polarity natural to it is preserved unaltered,
and it becomes subject to disease if that polarity is in the least
degree altered or its intensity diminished.

This would lead us to infer these arguments apply only to the

inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. The inhabitants of the
Southern Hemisphere must lay down their bodies with head
northward, for similar arguments. That the bulk of the human race
live on the Northern Hemisphere, appears to have been known to
the ancient Hindu Sages, as the dictum appears to have come down
without any qualifying remark.

Why the Eastern direction is preferred to the

Western for placing the head in the lying down
posture is explained thus: “It has been
established by experiments on medical
electricity that if a current passes from one part
of the body to another, it exercises a wholesome
influence where it enters, and produces some inflammations in
that part of the body whence it goes out. If you lie down with head
eastward, the current of thermal electricity, which is constantly
passing over the surface of the earth from east to west, passes
through your body also from head to feet, and therefore subdues
all inflammation present in the head, where it makes its entrance;
while if you lie down with head westward, the same current of the
electricity passes through your body from the feet to the head, and
therefore produces some kind of inflammation in the head, whence
it goes out. The head contains the most vital of organs, and the
most delicate of mechanisms- the Brain. It is a clear and healthy
head that can easily acquire knowledge, and not an inflamed or
congested head, which, on the other hand is the hot -bed of vague
and distressing thoughts.
The head contains the most vital of organs, and the mos t delicate
of mechanisms- the Brain. It is a clear and healthy head that can
easily acquire knowledge, and not an inflamed or congested head,
which, on the other hand is the hot -bed of vague and distressing
thoughts.

Thus has been elucidated for our benefit, what was commonly
considered a superstition hitherto. From this, it is plain that the
Sciences of Electricity and Magnetism were not only extensively
cultivated by the Ancient Hindus, but also highly developed, and
the principles applied in their practical daily life. As other
instances of their advanced knowledge of the Sciences, we find
that iron or copper rods are inserted at the tops of all temples that
Mindulies (Metallic cells) made of either gold, silver or i ron are
worn on the diseased parts of the body, and that Asanas or seats
made of either silk, wool, kusha grass, or hairy skins of the deer or
tiger are used when saying prayers. The function of the rod at the
top of the temple is the same as that of the m odern lightening
conductor. The Mindulies serve the same purpose as the electrical
belts and other appliances of the present day electrical treatment
of diseases. The woolen and skin asanas protect our lives during a
thunderstorm. So do the wooden sandals or mithiyadi worn by the
sanyasis of old.

For the same simple reasons described above, it is the age long
custom among Hindus that younger people should prostrate before
the elders and touch their feet with their head so as to acquire
magnetic energy and more particularly before the saintly persons,
as these saints had magnetized their system by their Tapasya, i.e.,
by observance of Brahmacharya (celibacy), conducting Poojas, by
practice of Yoga Asanas, Pranayamas and meditation, and by
austere observances and various spiritual practices.

Unfortunately for us, our ancient sages and saints have left us only
a legacy of short, crisp, epigrammatic aphorisms without a n
amplification or explanation of the rationale behind each. In our
littleness we have denominated the legacy as a bundle of
superstitions. This one instance must be an eye -opener to us and
an incentive to do some research and thinking to get at their real
and inner significance.
