ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

INTRODUCTION

This report is a short description of my TECHNICAL SEMINAR.

Artificial Intelligence (AI, also Machine intelligence, AI) is intelligence demonstrated by

machines, in contrast to natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals.

In computer science AI research is defined as the study of “Intelligence agents “.

AI focuses on three main skills: learning, reasoning & self-correction.

Artificial Intelligence is an approach to make a computer, a robot, or a product to think how smart
human think. AI is a study of how human brain think, learn, decide and work, when it tries to
solve problems. And finally, this study outputs intelligent software systems. The aim of AI is to
improve computer functions which are related to human knowledge, for example, reasoning,
learning, and problem-solving.

Learning processes: This aspect of AI programming focuses on acquiring data and creating

rules for how to turn the data into actionable information. The rules, which are called algorithms,
provide computing devices with step-by-step instructions for how to complete a specific task.

Reasoning processes: This aspect of AI programming focuses on choosing the right algorithm
to reach a desired outcome.

Problem-solving processes: This aspect of AI programming is designed to continually fine-tune

algorithms and ensure they provide the most accurate results possible.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

HISTORY OF AI

• The idea of AI goes as far back as ancient Greece. Greek myths speak of Hephaestus, a
blacksmith who created mechanical servants.

• The beginnings of modern AI can be traced to classical philosophers' attempts to describe

human thinking as a symbolic system.

Fast forward to 1935, when the earliest substantial work in the field was done by Alan tuning,
a logician & computer pioneer.

• Turing machine:
1951: Christopher Strachey who wrote the first successful AI program

• Computers checker program:

1956: John McCarthy coined the term AI
1963: ANALOGY, a program created by Thomas Evans, proved
that computers can solve IQ test analogy problems.
1967: First successful knowledge-based program in science and
mathematics.
1972: SHRDLU created by Terry Winograd.

• Robot arm responded to commands:

1987: Marvin Minsky publishes the society of mind.

1997: DEEP BLUE, a chess program defeats the current champion at
the time when this was invented.
2000: Interactive robot smart toys are made commercially available

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

FOUNDATION OF AI

• The field was founded on the claim that human intelligence “can be so
precisely describe that machine can be made to simulate it”.

• Some civilians also consider AI to be a danger to human races if it progresses

without any reduction

• This raises the philosophical arguments about the nature of mind and ethics of
creating artificial being featured with human-like intelligence.

• Issues which have been explored by myths fiction & philosophy since the
ages.

• Others believe that AI unlike previous technological revolutions will create a

risk of mass unemployment

GROWTH OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Dept. of ME, VVCE, Mysuru Page 9

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

• AI will increase economic growth by an average of 1.7% across 16 industries by 2035 with
Information and Communication, manufacturing and financial services leading all industries.

• According to the report, “AI has applications and use cases in almost every industry
vertical and is considered the next big technological shift, similar to past shifts like the
industrial revolution, the computer age, and the smartphone revolution.” Even ignoring
that bit of hyperbole, a good case can be made that artificial intelligence certainly has the
potential to upend a lot of industries, government activities and consumer behavior. In its
report, Tactica identifies 27 verticals that are employing AI technologies today or soon
will be. These include financial services, healthcare, defense, consumer retail,
advertising, and media & entertainment, among others.

• In terms of revenue, the top use case of the 191 they identified is algorithmic trading.
Here the investment banks and hedge fund firms are already using AI algorithms to drive
their portfolio strategies. The researchers estimate -- conservatively they say -- that by
2025 roughly half of investment assets will be traded via AI.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

INFORMATION

• Half of the century has passed, and AI has turned into an important field which
influences on our daily lives.

• Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer or a robot controlled by a

computer to do tasks that are usually done by humans because they require human
intelligence and discernment.

• The basic objective of AI (also called heuristic programming,

machine intelligence, or the simulation of cognitive behavior) is to enable
computers to perform such intellectual tasks as decision making, problem solving,
perception, understanding human communication

OVERVIEW
• In addition to giving us a novel outlook on information technology in general, this
broader view of AI also offers unexpected perspectives into how to think about
ourselves and the world around us.

• Since the invention of computers or machines, their capability to perform various

tasks went on growing exponentially. Humans have developed the power of
computer systems in terms of their diverse working domains, their increasing
speed, and reducing size with respect to time.

• A branch of Computer Science named Artificial Intelligence pursues creating the

computers or machines as intelligent as human beings.

ADVANTAGES OF AI

Dept. of ME, VVCE, Mysuru Page 19

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

ERROR DETECTION:

• Artificial intelligence helps in reducing the error and chance of reaching the
accuracy with a greater degree of precision is a possibility.
• It is applied in various studies.
• AI would have a low error rate compared to humans, if coded properly.
• They would have incredible precision, accuracy, & speed.
• Hey won’t be affected by hostile environment

DIFFICULT EXPLORATION:

• AI and the science of robotics can be put to use in mining & other fuel exploration
processes.
• Can detect fraud in card-based systems, probably other systems in future.
• Organizes & manages records.
• They can think logically without emotions, making rational decisions with less or no
mistakes.
• They interact with humans for entertainment or a task as avatar or robots.
1. An example of this is AI for playing many video-games
2. Robotic pets can interact with humans.

DISADVANTAGES OF AI

Dept. of ME, VVCE, Mysuru Page 20

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

HIGH COST:

• This requires a huge cost for the creation of AI as they are very complex machines.
• Their repair and maintenance require huge cost.
• They have software programs which should be frequently in up-to-date as the need
of machines to be smarter by the day.
• Can cost a lot of money 7 time to build, rebuild, & repair.
• Storage is expensive, but access & retrieval, may lead to connections in memory as
well as humans could.

NO IMPROVEMENT WITH EXPERIENCE:

• Unlike humans, AI cannot be improved with experience

• It leads to wear and tear.
• This stores a lot of data but the way it is accessed & used is very different from
human intelligence.
• Machines can easily lead to destruction, if put in the wrong hands.
• As seen partially with smartphones & other technology already, humans can become
too dependent on AI & lose their mental capacities.
