= COMBINATIONS {11 INTRODUCTION Inthe previous chapter, we have studied arrangements of some of them or all at a time. Most of the times we are weare more concerned in selecting a number of objects from given number of objects. In other words, we do not want to specify the ordering of selected objects. For example, a company may want to select 3 persons out of 10 applicants, a student may want to choose three books from hie library at a time etc. a certain number of objects by taking not interested in arranging the objects, but Suppose we want to select three persons out of 4 persons A, B, Cand D. We may choose A, B, C srA,B, Dor A, C, Dor B,C, D. Note that we have not listed A, B,C;B, C,A:C, A, B;B, A, C;CB.A and A, B separately here, because they represent the same selection A, B, C. But, they give rise ‘odifferent arrangements. It is evident from the above discussion that in a selection the order in which objects are arranged is immaterial 17.2 COMBINATIONS COMBINATIONS Each of the different selections made by taking some or all of a number of objects, iespective of their arrangements is called a combination. TMUSTRATION 1 List the different combinations formed of three letters A, B, C taken two at a time. SOLUTION The different combinations formed of three letters A,B, C are: AB, AC, BC ILUSTRATION 2 Write all combinations of four letters A, B,C, D taken two at a time. SOLUTION Various combinations of two letters out of four letters A, B, C, D are: AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD. OF ERENCE BETWEEN A PERMUTATION AND COMBINATION (i) Ina combination only selection is made whereas in a permutation not only a selection is made but also an arrangement in a definite order is considered. a, \t}) Ina combination, the ordering of the selected objects is immaterial whe Permutation, the ordering is essential. For example, A, B and B, A are same as combinations itdifferent as permutations. : 5 (i) Practically to find the permutations of n different items, taken rata oe vs fae gelen ‘ ‘tems from n items and then arrange them. So, usually the number of permutatior Tumber of combinations. i ‘) Each combination corresponds to many permutations.
