A. Sardar Sarovar Dam (Narmada District)

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a gravity dam on the Narmada river near Navagam, Gujarat in India. Four Indian states,
Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, receive water and electricity supplied from the dam. The
foundation stone of the project was laid out by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 5 April 1961. The project took
form in 1979 as part of a development scheme funded by the World Bank through their International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development, to increase irrigation and produce hydroelectricity, using a loan of

on
US$200 million. The construction for dam begun in 1987, but the project was stalled by the Supreme Court of
India in 1995 in the backdrop of Narmada Bachao Andolan over concerns of displacement of people. In 2000–01
the project was revived but with a lower height of 110.64 metres under directions from SC, which was later

03 ati
increased in 2006 to 121.92 meters and 138.98 meters in 2017. The water level in the Sardar Sarovar Dam
at Kevadia in Narmada district reached its highest capacity at 138.68 metres on 15 September 2019. For seismic
design 0.125g acceleration is considered in design.
00 uc
One of the 30 dams planned on river Narmada, Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD) is the largest structure to be built. It is
one of the largest dams in the world.
The dam's main power plant houses six 200 MW Francis pump-turbines to generate electricity and include
79 Ed
a pumped-storage capability. Additionally, a power plant on the intake for the main canal contains five
50 MW Kaplan turbine-generators. The total installed capacity of the power facilities is 1,450 MW. Power benefits
are shared among Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat in the ratio of 57:27:16 respectively.

Narmada Main Canal

Narmada Main Canal is a contour canal. It is the biggest lined irrigation canal in the world. It is about 458.318 km.
long up to Gujarat -Rajasthan border. The canal extends further in the state of Rajasthan to irrigate areas in Barmer
and Jhalore districts with a length of 74 km. The Main Canal is lined with plain cement concrete to minimise
seepage losses to attain higher velocity and to control the water logging in future. The lining work is carried out
with the mechanized pavers. Such a large scale paving of concrete lining is done for the first time in India.
The Main Canal in its journey has to negotiate several water streams, rivers, roads, railways etc. This is
possible by constructing appropriate structure on the canal. In all, there are 638 structures on the Narmada Main
Canal.

According to the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal (NWDT) Award (year -1979), 75% dependability is
Sa

considered while assessing the availability of 28 (Million Acre Feet) utilizable water in Narmada basin. 75%
dependability means the probability of getting 28 MAF of water, is for the period of 3 years out of average 4 years.
Out of the total assessed quantity of utilizable Narmada water, (a) Madhya Pradesh is entitled to a share of 18.25
MAF (65.18%), (b) Gujarat is entitled to a share of 9 MAF (32.14%) (c) Rajasthan is entitled to a share of 0.5 MAF
(1.79%) and (d) Mahrashtra is entitled to a share of 0.25 MAF (0.89%). In case of availability of utilizable in excess
of the water 28 MAF in a good year or falling short of the 28 MAF is a lean year, the allocation of water among
the four states shall be proportionately increased /decreased.

Garudeshwar Wier

Garudeshwar weir is being constructed on the river Narmada near the Statue of Unity. Garudeshwar weir will
increase visual beauty of both – the Statue of Unity and the Valley of Flowers by creating a small reservoir or lake.
The total height of the weir will be 31.75 metre. Hydro electricity will be produced through this weir. The reservoir

Failure of Machchu Dam-I

The Machchu-I dam failure or Morbi disaster was a dam-related flood disaster which occurred on 11 August 1979,
Sa

in India. The dam was built near Morbi on River Machchhu in August 1972 as a composite structure. It consisted
of a masonry spillway in river section and earthen embankments on both sides. The embankment had a 6.1 m top
width, with slopes 1 V : 3 H and 1 V : 2 H respectively for the upstream and downstream slopes and a clay core
extending through alluvium to the rocks below. The upstream face had a 61 cm small gravel and a 61 cm hand
packed riprap. The dam was meant to serve an irrigation scheme. It had a storage capacity of 1.1 × 10 8 m3. The
dam had a height of 22.56 m above the river bed, a 164.5 m of crest length of overflow section, and a total of 3742
m of crest length for the earth dam. The spillway capacity provided for 5663 m³/s. The failure was caused by
excessive rain and massive flooding leading to the disintegration of the earthen walls of the four kilometer
long Machchu dam. The actual observed flow following the intense rainfall reached 16307 m³/s, thrice what
the dam was designed for, resulting in its collapse. The Morbi dam failure was listed as the worst dam burst in
the Guinness Book of Records (at that time). During reconstruction of the dam the capacity of the spillway was
increased by four times and fixed at about 26,000 m³/s.

Kalpsar Project
Mission Statement – “A Sustainable Water-State” where there is “Water for all, water for ever and more
crops per drop”.

The Kalpasar Project envisages building a 30 km dam across the Gulf of Khambat in India for establishing a huge
fresh water coastal reservoir for irrigation, drinking and industrial purposes. The project with 30 km sea dam will
have the capacity to store 10,000 million cubic meters fresh water, equating to 25% of Gujarat’s average annual
rainwater flow, from the rivers of Saurashtra region namely Narmada, Mahi, Dhadhar, Sabarmati, Limbdi-
Bhagovo, and two other minor rivers. A 10 lane road link will also be set up over the dam, greatly reducing the

on
distance between Saurashtra and South Gujarat.

In addition to fresh water storage and tidal power generation, Kalpasar also aims at land reclamation, transportation
improvements and fisheries development. In accordance with this project, a mega fresh water reservoir will be

03 ati
constructed on the upstream side of the dam by impounding the surplus waters of numerous rivers. This project,
will resolve four vital problems of the State of Gujarat which are water, electrical power, road-rail transport and
development of ports
00 uc
The project, which will create world's largest freshwater lake in marine environment. Project entails construction
of the main Kalpasar Dam across Gulf of Khambat and another Bhadbhut Barrage on Narmada river, as well as
Bhadbhut-Kalpasar canal connecting the two. More than 30,000 MCM of water from Narmada river alone flows
79 Ed
out annually into the sea due to the lack of storage capacity and dams, thus experts have been calling for a review
of Gujarat's Water Policy to expedite the Kalpasar project.

The benefits of Kalpsar Project are as follows:

79 alp

(i). World's largest man made fresh water reservoir in the sea.
(ii). Highest importance and priority to irrigation and drinking water for Saurashtra and Central Gujarat regions.
(iii). The Reservoir will have the storage more than double the Sardar Sarovar (Narmada Reservoir) capacity.
(iv). Approx. 10.54-lakh hectare land in 37 talukas of nine districts of Saurashtra region will get irrigation benefit
99 nk

facility including rejuvenation of rivers. More than 60 existing dams will get permanently filled up with
water.
(v). Wind and solar energy will be generated which can also be used for lifting fresh water from the reservoir to
Sa

the canal.
(vi). Bhavnagar port will get revived which will result into speedy development of the region.
(vii). There will be large saving in travel time and fuel due to reduction in distance by about 136 km between
Bhavnagar to Surat/Mumbai.
(viii). Saline ground water of coastal area of Saurashtra & Central Gujarat will get converted into fresh water with
reduction in soil salinity.
(ix). Substantial improvement in ground water quality as well as soil salinity of coastal area of Saurashtra &
Central Gujarat.
(x). About 1.2 lakh hectare land along the periphery of the reservoir will be opened up for development towards
value-based land utilization.
(xi). Enhanced benefit of world class industrial estate like Dahej and Dholera-SIR will be available to
Bhavnagar/Saurashtra region.

Bhadbhut Barrage Project

Barrage near Bhadbhut village of Bharuch taluka with long span of 1.663 km on Narmada river planned with aims
to create reservoir with storage capacity of 599 million cubic meter MCM), prevent the tidal salinity ingress and
soil erosion. It will also help in Groundwater quality improvement. The bridge on barrage will shorten the 18 km
in transit between Dahej to Hajira (Surat) which will be resulted in saving of time and energy.

Background and Necessity of the Project

(i). Ingress of tidal water in upstream of Narmada River up to 70 km near to Shuklatirth. It badly hampered the

on
quality of water, which create the need of Barrage near Bhadbhut village to prevent the tidal ingress as well
to create reservoir to fulfill the portable water demand of the area.
(ii). Need of water of Bharuch and Ankleshwar mainly fulfilled by Narmada and Ukai-Kakrapar canal network.

03 ati
Existing capacity of these canal networks has been utilized beyond its design capacity with increasing the area
of cities. It pressing the need of alternates to fulfill the water demand and Bhadbhut barrage will be proven as
good alternate and it resolve increasing water demand to the great extent.
00 uc
(iii). Tidal ingress in Narmada river make Narmada water worthless which create the burden on industrial area of
Bharuch and Dahej to get the water through pumping from 70 km upstream near Angareshwar.
(iv). Area of 13 villages on right bank of Bharuch and Vagra taluka. 14 villages on left hank of Ankleshwar and
79 Ed
Hansot taluka are being submerged and affected by soil erosion whenever flood occurred which will be saved
by proposed barrage.
(v). Protection from flood and tidal water salinity to the low lying agricultural lands on bank of river Narmada for
the villages like Dhanturia, Taria, Haripura, Borbhatha etc.
79 alp

(vi). Soil erosion and effect on agricultural land of villages on left bank of Shuklatirth-Kabirvad to Hansot due to
tidal water ingress will be protected through this barrage.
(vii). Silting on right bank of river Narmada from Bharuch to Bhadbhut, the river has meandered shifted nearly by
0.5 km to 1 km.
99 nk

(viii).Reduction inflow and frequent flood in Narmada River cause the production losses of f Hilsa fish, the identity
of area will be saved at greater extent.
(ix). There is no bridge on Narmada River between Hansot to Dahej, which increase transit of more than 18 km.
Sa

(x). Representations from different stakeholders including MPs, MLAs, industrial units, GIDC etc. continuously
made at different platform to resolve the problem cause in absence of barrage on Narmada River near
Bhadbhut village of Bharuch taluka. Government of Gujarat considering these representations in positive way
and decided to construct the Barrage near Bhadbhut village as "Stand alone project".

Benefits of Bhadbhut Barrage Project

(i). Salinity ingress on the area of Narmada riverbanks leads by tidal water will be scaled down through Bhadbhut
barrage and ground water quality will be improved, too.
(ii). Construction of Barrage on Narmada River, 125 km downstream from Sardar Sarovar Dam near Bhadbhut
village will create the reservoir of potable water with capacity of 599 MCM on u/s side from Shuklatirth.
(iii). Water to be stored at barrage will fulfill the water demand of villages of Bharuch taluka, industrial units of
Dahej PCPIR and GIDC area of Bharuch and Ankleshwar.
(iv). Construction of Bridge on Bhadbhut barrage will shorten the distance of 18 km for the route of Dahej to Hajira
(Surat) which will result in to saving of time and energy.

SAUNI Yojana
The state of Gujarat is facing severe water scarcity and several regions remain arid and receive scarce rainfall, thus
facing frequent droughts. People of Saurashtra and Kutch regions were facing acute shortage of water for drinking
and irrigation and were forced to migrate to other regions. Almost 70 percent of dams, reservoirs and other water
bodies of this region had become dry and large area of the Kutch-Suarashtra region was dependent on water supply
through tankers. In a bid to mitigate this problem, the Gujarat government undertook the development of a state
water supply grid, Swarnim Gujarat Saurashtra–Kutch Water Grid Project.

Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) is a project launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi

on
with objective of filling 115 major dams by diverting floodwaters overflowing from the Sardar Sarovar Dam across
the Narmada river to the drought areas.

Sardar Sarovar Dam has 4.75 million acre-feet (MAF) storage capacity which is further distributed to states of

03 ati
Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. A lot of floodwaters still overflow the dam especially in the monsoon season
and end up going to the sea route. Gujarat's share is around 3 MAFT in that floodwater. With the new scheme, the
water will be distributed to all the big reservoirs.

Objectives of SAUNI

(i).
00 uc
The project acts as a ‘linking’ project where the water will be filled in irrigation dams that are already
equipped with canal network. 115 dams in the Saurashtra region will be filled with excess water.
79 Ed
(ii). The pipelines from the SAUNI job are underground, so meaning no soil should be obtained. The plumbing
has been massive in diameter 500 mm to 3000 mm.
(iii). It entails putting a 1126 km system of pipelines to haul Narmada drinking water to such dams, also irrigate
4.13 lakh hectares.
79 alp

(iv). To resolve the water related problems of an area.

Links of SAUNI Yojana

99 nk

SAUNI Yojana has been launched to divert one MAFt excess over flowing flood water of Narmada allocated to

Coastal Area Protection Scheme

The total coastal length of Gujarat is about 1600 Km.Valsad, Navsari, Surat & Bharuch districts of Gujarat state
have its western boundary as Arabian sea. It has been observed On western boundary of Valsad, Navsari, Surat,
Bharuch & Jamnagar districts & on eastern boundary of Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, Porbandar & Jamnagar
districts there is coastal erosion. The erosion is taking place mostly under the action of strong tidal current
accompanied by wave action. Particularly just before monsoon and in monsoon season. The general situation of
these villages is favourable from view point of fishing trade. Heavy damages are found to houses, fertile land and
other property due to coastal erosion. Local people are representing for providing protective measures to prevent
the Land ward recession of coastline.

In view of above, keeping in mind the nature damage, anti-sea erosion works are carried out by the NWRWS & K
department. The protection work is carried out by providing gabion / big stones walls. Thus damages due to coastal
erosion is controlled by providing such protection wall.
