News Watch

To begin with, it is not whether you're white or of color, as long as you intend to produce

real news, showing all sides of the story without bias and towards the goal of considering the

people's right to know, you are doing good. On top of that, I believe that media owned by

Whites, but managed by People of Color, still produce news and entertainment that remains in

touch with its readers and audiences as long as the people of color still adhere to true news and

firmly believe in integrity and dedication in serving the people. This is because I think they can

still work together if both parties can be considerate for all sides of the story without being bias

and work together towards having the same goal as producing real news for the people/audience

to know. Examples of this could include suggestions for rap videos focusing on blacks, programs

focusing on the influence of black communities, etc. This would be an example of keeping it

real. Moreover, it would show, that just because a specific type of media is owned by whites, it

does not mean that People of Color, cannot have an influence on what they want to see, in

various programs.

Moving on, what critics have said about the news and entertainment content of BET and

"Telemundo", after media conglomerates acquired them, is that the content was watered down.

Instead of focusing on the power of black and Latino culture, that content became a lot safer, and

it was afraid to take more risks. What this demonstrates, is that when it comes to media

conglomerates acquiring specific types of content, is it important that they are put in check. This

is why it would have been best, for BET to be managed by People of Color, with Telemundo

being managed by Latinos and/or Latinas. Also, critics have said that the media network played

bias against the news due to its language used on the TV. Besides, critics said that being acquired

by these media conglomerates can lead them to bias coverages for the benefits of companies in
the same group and loss of objectivity in delivering the news to the public. Furthermore, this

leads them to only cover one side of each story, thus being selective on what they want to

broadcast and failing the public's right to know.

Apart from that, some say that the merging of media institutions fosters healthy

competition and provides a check against the government. Moreover, they would rather choose

to serve the people with true news and integrity than accumulating money. Finally, I noticed that

ethnic composition tends to be a stronger indicator of diverse on-air talent within the business

than ownership structures. Despite strict time constraints, however, respondents struggled to

include white voices and faces in storylines that are mostly associated with African Americans,

like those concerning poverty and violence, in order to demonstrate that these concerns impact

both black and white communities alike.
