Kabul: GIZ staff member killed in explosion

An explosion took place in Kabul on Saturday, 10 July 2021, claiming the life of GIZ
staff member Mubarak Shah Hakimi. GIZ is working closely with the local security
agencies and the German Embassy to clarify the situation. It is currently believed
that Mubarak Shah Hakimi fell victim to an explosive device intended for the Afghani
army as he approached his home. He worked as a driver for GIZ in Afghanistan.

‘We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Mubarak Shah Hakimi. We have lost
a valuable staff member who was popular with everybody,’ says GIZ Managing
Director Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, who is responsible on the Management Board
for the Asia, Latin America, Caribbean (APLAK) Department, including Afghanistan.
‘Our sincere condolences and sympathy are with his family, friends and all his local
colleagues at this difficult time.’

Joachim Prey, Country Director Afghanistan, adds: ‘We are analysing the security
situation on an ongoing basis and doing everything we can to protect our local staff.
This makes it all the more shocking for us that our colleague has clearly lost his life
because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Every day we are in close
contact with our local colleagues to advise them and support them as best we can in
this difficult situation.’

If you wish to leave your condolences, you can do so on the ‘In memoriam’ page.
