2. SOCIAL ETIQUETTE CONVERSATION

Social etiquette conversation occurs when you are in a large social group and
interacting with a wide variety of people and interests. As a result, there are some general
rules to follow in order to engage in social etiquette conversation and be socially
accepted.

1. Be Polite: Remember when you are in a social situation it is important to always be

polite and respectful of other guests even if you vehemently disapprove of certain
comments or other individuals are not being polite. Make sure you follow the rules of
social etiquette conversation and remember your manners, always saying thank you, you
are welcome, please.

2. Ask Appropriate Questions: Ask appropriate questions for the situation at hand,
comment on the décor, and other surface topics that will keep the conversation going.

3. Keep it Short: In social situations it is always important to understand the nature of

social etiquette conversation and keep conversations short and socialize with everyone
present. If you have a long, in depth conversation with certain individuals they might be
resentful because they are interested in exchanging pleasantries with everyone in
attendance.

4. Eye Contact and Personal Space: Making eye contact and allowing individuals their
personal space is important in all conversations, but especially in social etiquette
conversation. This allows you to seem interested, polite and respectful of the other
individual, which are all social requirements.

5. Smile and Be Happy: Just because you are not completely comfortable with everyone
you meet, that does not give you a reason to not smile. Be happy, and you will attract
other happy people into your life.

Starting & Responding a Conversation

Conversation Starters:
How are you getting on? – just another way of saying „how are you?‟

You doing OK? – asked when the person has had some tough experience recently and you
want to ask politely if they‟re OK.

Hi, …! What’s new? – this is a very informal way of greeting a close friend or anyone
who
you see on a regular basis and you want to ask has anything happened since you last met.

Hi, …! What’s up? – the same as above with a difference that you‟re probably not that
interested in what news the other person might have.
5

Hi, …! Long time no see! – used when you haven‟t seen the person for a long period of
time
and you want to state that fact in the greeting.

Hi, …! Have you been keeping busy? – just a standard enquiry with little or no direct
meaning.

Do you mind me asking…? – a typical way of asking something that might be a slightly
personal question.

OK, here’s the thing … – a very handy way to start making your point if you‟re not sure
how
to begin the sentence.

Responding to a Conversation:
Thanks, I’ve been keeping busy – just a standard response to a standard greeting with
little or no direct meaning.

Thanks for asking, I’m fine, how are you? – a typical response and counter-question to a
greeting phrase „how are you?‟

Hi, how you’re doing! It’s good to see you! – a typical response to a greeting from
someone you haven‟t seen for a while.

Can’t complain – a response to a standard greeting like ‘How are you?‟ It‟s not as
exciting phrase as „Thanks, I‟m great!‟ but it doesn‟t mean you‟re having some problems
in your life.

Can you say it again, please? – a request to repeat the question if you didn‟t understand
what was said. A more direct question: Can you slow it down a bit, please?

And how about you? – a typical response when you‟re not sure what to ask next so you‟re
asking the other person the same think they asked you. You can respond with this counter
greeting on nearly all standard greetings.

To the best of my knowledge … – when you‟re 99% sure about the statement you‟re
making. Also a good start of a response you want to take a bit more time to consider what
you‟re going to say.

As far as I know … – the same as above.

Good for you! – a response to someone telling you about their success in something or
some
good news that they‟re happy about.
6

Can’t argue with that – used when you agree with the statement of the other person.

How do you know? – a counter-question you can ask when someone surprises you with a
question about something they‟re not really expected to know.

That’s a good one! – a surprise response to funny or surprising news from your chat
partner.

Really? Tell me more about it! – used when you want your chat partner to tell me about
what he/she just said.

Frankly speaking… – just a way to start your response. It indicates that you‟re about to
open up and be very honest with your chat partner.

Well, to be honest with you, … – the same as above.

No problem – a typical response to a small request you‟re happy to do.

Never mind, it’s fine! - this phrase is used when the person offers to do a favour for you
but it‟s not really necessary.

Never mind, forget what I just said –You can use this phrase if you feel that he/she might
be slightly annoyed or offended by your question or comment so you want to end it there.

You got me there – this can be said instead of „I don‟t‟ know‟ – it will sound more casual
and not as defensive as the old „I don‟t know‟!

You’ve got to be kidding me! – said when someone tells you something that borders on
the unbelievable and you want to express your surprise.

That’s a good question. – a phrase used when you want to take your time to think over
the question. This is an ideal phrase to use when you‟re stuck but instead of remaining
silent you can start your response with this phrase.

Well, how to put it in the right words. – the same as above.

That would be great! – a response to an offer that you‟re really happy about.

… you know what I mean? – when you want to emphasize what you just said.

You see, the thing is that … – this is how you begin a sentence when you‟re asked to
explain something.
7

Departure Phrases:

I’d better be going – followed by a simple phrase like „it‟s too late‟, or „have lots to do‟ –
and indicator you‟d like to walk off and finish the conversation.

OK, I’m sorry but I have to leave now! – used when your chat partner has clear intentions
of continuing the conversation but you just need to go so you‟re making it clear that you
need to go.

See you later! – used when you know that you‟ll be seeing each other again sometime.

See you around! – the same as above

Keep in touch! – a good-bye phrase meaning you want the other person to get in touch
with you every now and then and that you‟ve the same intentions.

It was nice seeing you, take care! – a good-bye phrase used when you know that you
won‟t see the person for a while.

How to Overcome Shyness

Many people suffer from some form of social anxiety. It is true that being an introvert
can lead to shyness. However, refrain from allowing shyness to hold you back from
speaking up when there is a need to.

Tips to overcome shyness and be more confident:

Work on deeper fears. Take shyness as a symptom for the need to address your deeper
fears. Is your shyness a case of poor self-esteem, related to childhood conditioning,
excessive worrying and so on?

Appreciate your individuality. In case you haven‟t noticed, everyone is unique and
different. Instead of feeling self-conscious, embrace who you are – unconditionally.
When you learn to embrace your uniqueness, you will have more confidence.

Take Deep breaths. When you are in situations where you feel shyness trying to takeover,
it can be helpful to take deep breaths. This will help you to clear your mind, give you
some time to gain composure and avoid an anxiety attack.

Go on new adventures. Being bold is an important step in overcoming feelings of

shyness. The next time you are presented with a social opportunity that is not your usual
scene, go out as a member and give it a try.

Stop saying you are shy. Instead of constantly talking about how shy you are, try
reframing your mind with positive affirmations. Affirm statements such as “I am
8

confident”, “I speak clearly and with ease” and “I can articulate beautifully, eloquently
and freely”.

Release the past. Don‟t allow past hurts to rule your future. Find new friends who will
appreciate you for who you are.

Learn to speak up. It is okay to speak and be heard, so try to get into the habit of talking
louder. Practice in front of the mirror. Get someone you feel comfortable with to provide
you with feedback about your audibility.

Meet new people regularly. A great way to overcome shyness is to make it a point to
meet someone new every week. When you are constantly focused on making new
friends, you will forget all about your shyness

Creative visualization. Imagine yourself striking conversations with strangers and giving
public presentations. See yourself as someone who is every bit confident. Act as-if and
soon, you will play the part for real!

Get role models. It helps to get role models who are not shy in the least. Study the
behavior, habits and likes of these people.

Body Language in Conversation

Don’t cross your arms or legs – We have probably already heard we shouldn‟t cross
your arms as it might make us seem defensive or guarded. This goes for our legs too.
Keep your arms and legs open.

Have eye contact, but don’t stare – If there are several people you are talking to, give
them all some eye contact to create a better connection and see if they are listening.

Relax your shoulders – When you feel tense it‟s easily winds up as tension in your
shoulders. They might move up and forward a bit. Try to relax. Try to loosen up by
shaking the shoulders a bit and move them back slightly.

Nod when they are talking – Nod once in a while to signal that you are listening. But
don‟t overdo it.

Don’t slouch; sit up straight – but in a relaxed way, not in a too tense manner.

Lean, but not too much – If you want to show that you are interested in what someone
is saying, lean toward the person talking.

Smile – Relax a bit, smile when someone says something funny. People will be a lot
more inclined to listen to you if you seem to be a positive person

Don’t touch your face – it might make you seem nervous and can be distracting for the
9

listeners or the people in the conversation.

Keep your head up – Don‟t keep your eyes on the ground, it might make you seem
insecure and a bit lost. Keep your head up straight and your eyes towards the horizon.

Slow down a bit – this goes for many things. Walking slower not only makes you seem
more calm and confident, it will also make you feel less stressed.

Don’t fidget – try to avoid, phase out or transform fidgety movement and nervous ticks
such as shaking your leg or tapping your fingers against the table rapidly. You‟ll seem
nervous.

Use your hands more confidently –Use your hands to describe something or to add
weight to a point you are trying to make.

Don’t stand too close –Let people have their personal space, don‟t invade it.

Keep a good attitude – keep a positive, open and relaxed attitude. How you feel will
come through in your body language and can make a major difference.

3. READING COMPREHENSION - 1

The study of control processes in electronic, mechanical and biological systems is

known as Cybernetics. The word was coined in 1948 by the American mathematician
Norbert Wiener from the Greek word meaning pilot or steersman. Cybernetics is
concerned with the analysis of the flow of information in both living organisms and
machines, but is particularly concerned with systems that are capable of regulating their
own operations without human control.
Automatic regulation is accomplished by using information about the state of the
end product that is fed back to the regulating device, causing it to modify or correct
production procedures if necessary. The concept of feedback is at the very simple
example of a self-regulating machine is a thermostat, which reacts to continual feedback
about the outside temperature and responds accordingly to achieve the temperature that
has been programmed into it.
The applications of cybernetics are wide reaching, appearing in science,
engineering, technology, sociology, economics, education and medicine. Computers can
keep a patient alive during a surgical operation making instantaneous modifications based
on a constant flow of information in an individual basis. In the home, automation is
present in such everyday products as refrigerators, coffeemakers and dishwashers. In
industry, automation is increasing its applications, although it is currently applied
primarily to the large-scale production of single units. In industries in which a break in
the flow of production can ruin the product, automatic controls are invaluable. Chemical
and petroleum plants are now almost completely automatic, as are industries involved in
the production of chemicals and atomic energy. Automation has become the answer when
human safety is the number one priority.

READING COMPREHENSION – 2

The 20th century has witnessed a great scientific revolution. Its magnitude is very
much greater than the Industrial Revolution or the Biological Revolution witnessed up to
the 19th century. In the fields of physical and natural sciences and engineering and
technology there have been tremendous developments in the fields of atomic and space
research. The old theory of indivisibility of atom was exploded; that the atom could be
split has been demonstrated. This has led to great developments. On the one hand, there
has the making of atomic weapons. On the other hand, atomic energy has been put to
constructive purpose. A number of atomic power stations have been constructed. Atomic
energy has been used to drive ships. Efforts are also on to make it feasible to use atomic
energy in automobiles. Space research has developed in leaps and bounds. The moon has
been brought nearer the earth. Rockets and space-crafts have been launched into the
space in an effort to get data about the other – solar planets. Speculations are on for
building interstellar space - crafts.
There has been significant development in the fields of communication and
electronics. Wireless and satellite communication system have brought societies and
nations very close. Within an instant the message could reach across thousands of miles.
The electronics media has become a boon to the society from the points of view of
education and entertainment.
The progress in the field of Chemistry has resulted in proliferation of all kinds of
industries. Especially of use to the human society is the contribution of chemistry to
agriculture. The production of fertilizers and pesticides has the way for more production
of food items. The subject of metallurgy has become a major developing science. Further,
the most significant developments of this field are that it has become interdisciplinary in
nature. The application of chemistry to the medical and biological study is noteworthy.
Similarly, rapid development has been noticed in natural sciences also. Besides the
new methods of producing and using fertilizers and pesticides, new scientific methods of
raising and managing crops have come up. The development in genetic research has
grown so much that new insights have been obtained in the study of various systems in
living organisms. Genetic engineering is now at the threshold of bringing about another
13

significant revolution in lifestyle. The study of plants and animals in relation to the
environment is developing into another major useful science.
The great development in engineering and technology has resulted in the invention
of numerous machines that make life easy for human beings. Revolution in the transport
system, especially the introduction of the supersonic aviation has made the world a global
village. Besides the household gadgets, the robots are being introduced not only for
domestic purposes, but also for industrial purposes. That is, more efficient work at the
least possible time is now being promised. The introduction of computing machines has
revolutionized all aspects of life. From the medical to the academic world, the computers
have become the most reliable factor in the diagnostics and interpretation of diseases and
problems.
All the great developments in the physical sciences, natural sciences and
engineering and technology have contributed to a comfortable life. Efficiency in work is
almost ensured. Savings of human energy from drudgery has been achieved. In short, a
magnificent revolution has taken place in human life because of scientific developments
in the 20th century.

READING COMPREHENSION – 3

The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rainforest. It covers an area of nearly
2.8 million square miles, which is nearly the size of the continent of Australia. The
Amazon Rainforest gets its life from the majestic Amazon River, the world's second
largest river, which runs directly through the heart of the region. The rainforest itself is
simply the drainage basin for the river and its many tributaries. The vast forest itself
consists of four layers, each featuring its own ecosystems and specially adapted plants
and animals.
The forest floor is the lowest region. Since only two percent of the sunlight filters
through the top layers to the understory, very few plants grow here. The forest floor,
however, is rich with rotting vegetation and the bodies of dead organisms, which are
quickly broken down into nutrients integrated into the soil. Tree roots stay close to these
available nutrients and decomposers such as millipedes and earthworms use these
nutrients for food. The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest
floor, only about 2- 5 percent of the sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the
plants in the understory have large, broad leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible.
The understory is so thick that there is very little air movement. As a result, plants rely on
insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.
The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in
the rainforest occurs. Many canopy leaves have specially adapted leaves which form
"drip tips". Drip tips allow water to flow off the leaves which prevents mosses, fungi, and
lichens from occupying the leaves. Leaves in the canopy are very dense and filter about
80 percent of the sunlight. The canopy is where the wealth of the rainforest's fruits and
flowers grow. Bromeliads, cup-like plants, provide drinking pools for animals and
breeding locations for tree frogs.
The emergent layer is above the canopy, and is the top layer of the rainforest.
Trees in the emergent layer break through the canopy and may reach heights of 200 feet.
Leaves in the emergent layer are small and covered with a special wax to hold water.
Seeds are blown to other parts of the forest. Trees which rise to the emergent layer are
16

massive. Many are braced by huge buttress roots. Trunks can be 16 feet in circumference.
Many animals that survive in the emergent layer never touch the ground.

Slaves

A king had a large number of slaves. One of

them was very black. He was true to the king.

So the king loved him greatly.

One day the king went out on a camel. Some

slaves walked in front of the king. Others

went behind the king. The black slave rode on a horse by the side of his master –

The King.

The King had a box. There were pearls in it. On the way the box fell down in

a narrow street. It broke into pieces. The pearls rolled on the ground. The king said

to his slaves. “Go and take the pearls. I do not want them an y longer," said the

king. The slaves ran and gathered the pearls. They took those pearls.

The black slave did not leave his place. He was by the side of his master. He

guarded his master. He cared for the life of his master. He did not care for the

master’s pearls. He was the true servant. The king observed the attitude of the

servant and gave him many gifts.

Carpenter

A carpenter went home after shutting down his

workshop. When he was gone, a poisonous snake

entered his workshop. The snake was hungry and

hoped to find its supper lurking somewhere within.

It slithered from one end to another. Finally it bumped into an axe and got very

slightly injured. In angry and revenge, the snake bit the snake with full for ce. What

could a snake’s bite do to the metallic axe? Instead the snake’s mouth started

bleeding.

Out of fury and arrogance, the snake tried its best to strangle and kill the

metallic axe - The object that was causing it the pain by wrapping itself around the

axe. The next day the carpenter opened the workshop. He found the dead snake

wrapped around the blades of the axe. Here the snake did not die because of

someone’s fault.

But it faced these consequences merely because of its own anger and wrath.

Sometimes when angry, we try to cause harm to others. But as time passes by, we

realize that we caused more harm to ourselves. It is not necessary that we react to

everything. Step back and ask ourselves if the matter is really worth responding to.

A Farmer and His Wife

A farmer said to his wife, “You are lazy. You work

slowly and lethargically. You waste your time."

The wife was angry at the words of her husband. She

said to her husband, “You are wrong. Stay at home

tomorrow. I will go to field. I will do your work there.

Will you do my works at home here?"

The farmer said happily, “Very well. I will do your

works back at home." The wife said, “Milk the cow. Feed the pigs. Wash the utensils.

Take care of our hen. Spin the yarn."

The woman went to the field. The farmer stayed back at home. He took a vessel and

went to the cow to milk it. He tried to milk the cow. He received a good kick. He then

went to the pig-sty. He hit his head against the beam. He went to fe ed the hen. He

forgot to spin.

The wife returned from the field when it turned evening. The farmer hung down his

head in shame. Thereafter he did not find fault with his wife. They lived happily

together for a long time.
