N.T.593E CONVERTER AP501 - V 1.0 – (23/03/2000) of pages 54
1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL INFORMATION

The electromagnetic flowmeter uses the Faraday’s electromagnetic induction law to measure the flow of conductive
liquids.
This device was engineered to be compact and light. It is composed by two parts separately installed:
- Nr 1 insertion electromagnetic flowmeter; it must be installed on piping where the process liquid flows
(AP1013–AP1014-AP1017-AP1018-AP1016/DIN-AP1116).
- Nr 1 converter; where the electric signal coming from meter is amplified and processed (AP501 – AP501/B).
They are connected by only one cable.
In the IP68 version this cable is sealed and it is coming out from meter.
Another particular characteristic of this instruments is the utilization of a square wave excitation current. This allows
to obtain a good zero stability (autozero).

1.2 - CHARACTERISTICS
The insertion electromagnetic flowmeters and the converter AP501 – AP501/B present the following characteristics:
1- compact, light, easy installation and low cost.
2- high accuracy with short upstream and downstream rectilinear tract. It is possible to obtain accurate
measurements also with uneven flow.
3- square wave excitation; zero stability.
4- the utilization of integrated circuit with C-MOS technology. The utilization of a microprocessor reduces the
complexity of the electronic part and increases reliability.
5- limited power consumption. Only 9 Watts (with 24 Vdc power supply)
6- separated or joined installation of converter on meter. If circumstances don't allow the installation of remote
converter, we can supply the compact version.
7- it doesn't need a previous choice of the fluid type. If it is conductive and non-magnetic, it is possible to obtain
stable measures of flow without errors.
8- it allows accurate measurements of the flow of sludge. The non-uniform distribution of velocity, present in the
flow of sludge, doesn't influence measurement, allowing an high accuracy.
9- negligible pressure loss. The pressure losses aren't appreciable, because the flow of liquid doesn't find any
obstacles.
10- linear relation between flow and output signal. It can execute accurate measurements on a large range of flows.
11- the parameters of fluids don't influence measurement. The temperature, the pressure, the density, the
conductivity and the type of fluid don't influence the accuracy of measurement.
12- the presence of deposits on electrodes doesn't influence the measurement. Flowmeter will not work any more
only when electrodes will be completely insulated.

1.4 - DESCRIPTION
It is constituted by an AISI 304 pipe, that has, at its own ends, two carbon steel flanges on the versions AP1018 -
AP1017 - AP1013 - AP1014 or two AISI 304 unions type DIN 11851 on the versions AP1016/DIN. An insulator
material ( teflon or hard rubber ) lines it too. This lining material is present also on flanges.
On demand, you can have the meter with stainless steel flanges.
In the version AP1116 the lining ( only teflon ) is used also as principal structure.
The windings, to produce the magnetic field, are in the external side of the pipe. A steel cover and a polyurethane
resin casting protect them.
The two electrodes are in the middle of meter on two points that are diametrically opposed.
The connector is in the external side of the meter and is equipped with a protective cap. To avoid the entry of dirt,
don’t ever leave it open!
To avoid the loss of cap, a plastic wire connects it to meter.
In the IP 68 version, cable is resinated inside a junction box to assure the protection. You have to declare the lenght
of this cable when order the flowmeter.
A matching card (AP550) completes the supply of meter. This card has the same serial number of flowmeter and
must be inserted on the suitable connector inside converter AP501 – AP501/B ( see drawing 5582-5583-5584-5585).
If the converter is comprised in the supply, we already insert the card AP550. In case of replacement of the converter
AP501 – AP501/B, you must insert the card AP550 inside the new converter.

MEASUREMENT BLOCKAGE
Converter may have the measurement blockage device.
You have to use this device when you don’t desire to count a liquid flowing inside flowmeter.
Making contact between clamps 12 and 13, you block measurement. It will start again when you will open on the above-
mentioned contact (see drawing 5590). See “Configuration of the digital input” for the right programming.

USER’S MANUAL
N.T.593E CONVERTER AP501 - V 1.0 – (23/03/2000) of pages 54

2 - PRINCIPLE OF OPERATING
The magnetic flowmeter is an instrument measuring the flow of a fluid using the Faraday's electromagnetic induction
law.
As illustrated in picture Nr 2, a magnetic flux with density B (perpendicular to the direction of flow) crosses an
insulated pipe where fluid flows.
Flux flowing through the pipe must be electrically conductive. In this case this magnetic flux induces a potential
difference E that’s detectable by two electrodes (perpendicular to the direction of flow and to the magnetic field).
This potential is proportional to the velocity of fluid V in the measurement point.
E = K*B*D*V (V) (formula 1)

E : voltage induced to electrodes (V)

K : dimensionless constant
B : magnetic flux density
D : distance between the two electrodes
V : velocity of fluid
The flow of the fluid Q (m3/s) is given by the following formula:
Q = PI*D*D*V/4 (formula 2)
The combination of both formulas gives as result the following formula:
E = K*B*D*Q*4 / PI*D*D = 4 K*B*Q / PI*D
The signal E, multiplied for a suitable coefficent due to installation, is a signal proportional to flow.

Fig. 2 - Principle of operating

The electromagnetic flowmeters may have d.c. or a.c. excitations. When the systems are excited in a.c., electrostatic
or electromagnetic noises may influence measurement.
Otherwise the d.c. excited systems are less sensible to noise produced by the electromagnetic induction, because
voltage inducted to electrodes is a d.c. However they may have errors of measurement because of the electrochemical
polarization between electrodes and fluid.
The electromagnetic flowmeters excited by a square wave exclude the handicaps of both d.c. and a.c. systems and
have the advantages of both ones.
First of all a timer circuit with about 8 pulses/sec frequency controls the polarity of the square wave current exciting
flowmeter that gives an electromotive force with a wave form like the one of the excitation current.
The input stage of converter, an high impedance differential amplifier, receives and amplifies this electromotive
force.
The next stage, a variable gain amplifier automatically controlled by microprocessor, establishes the velocity range
of fluid. Now the A/D converter module receives this signal. This stage integrates signal for an established period,
then microprocessor impresses to the input of integrator a reference voltage that inverts the slope of the ramp of
integrator. As result we have a pulse with a length that is proportional to the amplitude of the input signal and
conseguently proportional to the velocity of fluid. Microprocessor receives, measures width with resolution higher
than one microsecond, converts in technical units and shows on LCD the results of processing.

3 - INSTALLATION

3.1 - PRECAUTION FOR THE CHOICE OF THE PLACE

MECHANICAL PRECAUTION
• Choose a place where there are no flow pulsations.
• Avoid to install flowmeter where pipe presents vacuum.
• Avoid to install equipments where there are vibrations.
• Avoid the exposure at the sun-light or use a protective screen (for converter only).
• Avoid to install equipments inside place with dampness or corrosive environment.
• Avoid to install equipments too high or inside a close space.
• Choose an airy place where you can easily work.
• Don’t install flowmeter on piping with cathodic protection without the respective insulating flanges.
• Avoid condensate reaches connector (see drawing 5142).
• Inject other liquids downstream flowmeter.
• Respect the flow direction indicated by arrow imprinted on flowmeter (see drawing 5604).

ELECTRIC PRECAUTION
Inputs / outputs :
• Execute connections with 2 x 1 mm2 shielded cable.
Power supply :
• Execute connections with 3 x 1 mm2 cable.
• Public main : 220/110 Vac ±10% 50/60 Hz (instrumental line without noises).
• 24Vdc converters connect the (-) of the power supply to ground. So, to avoid “ground loops”, this power supply
has not to feed other instruments connecting (-) to ground.
• Be sure to have a good earthing.
• Avoid to install the equipment near electrical devices that can cause noises in measurement (like motors,
transformers, radio transmitters and equipments generating electromagnetic or electrostatic noises). In case of
doubt, make cables pass inside to at least 2mm thick metallic tubes and ground them.
• In case of particulary hampered ambient, as the heavy industrial ambient, you have to tube cables inside conduits
and ground them. You have to re-establish the electromagnetic ambient of the light industry.
• Keep plugged the unused cable fittings.
