Section - A

(CLO 1, PLO1)
Q1

A core with three legs is shown in Figure 1. Its depth is 15 cm. and there are 450
turns on the leftmost leg. The relative permeability of the core can be assumed
to be 2500 and constant. Assume a 6 percent increase in the effective area of the
air gap due to fringing effects. Solve the following:

a) What is the flux density, B, in each of the legs of the core?

b) What is the flux density in each air gap?

Q 2.

The linear machine shown in Figure 2 has a magnetic flux density of 0.9 T
directed into the page, a resistance of 0.45 ohm, a bar length l = 1.5 m, and a
battery voltage of 200 V.

Use the concepts of Linear DC Machine to solve the following:

(a) What is the initial force on the bar at starting? What is the initial current flow?

(b) What is the No-Load steady-state speed of the bar?

(c) If the bar is applied with a force of 30 N in the direction of motion, what is the
new steady-state speed?

(d) If a 30 N force applied opposite to the direction of motion, what is the new
steady-state speed of the bar?
