Clock
Let us first understand the concept of degrees with different hands of the clock.
Hour Hand
In 12 hours = 360 degree
In 1 hour = 360 / 12 = 30 degree
1 Hour = 30 degree
Now, 1 Hour = 60 min = 30 degree
1 minute = 1/2 degree
Minutes
In 60 minutes = 360 Degree
In 1 minute = 360 / 60 = 6 Degree
1 minute = 6 degree
Second
60 Seconds = 360 Degree
1 sec = 360 / 60 = 6 Degree
1 Second = 6 degree

Points to remember
1) The hands of the clock are perpendicular in 15 minutes spaces apart.
2) The hands of the clock are in straight line when they coincide or opposite to each other.
3) 0 degree / 360 degree → overlap / coincide
180 degree → opposite / straight
90 degree → right angle
4) The minute hand gain 55 minutes over hour hand per hour. So, x minute space to be gained by
minute hand over hour hand can be calculated as x × (60/55) or x × (12/11)

Types of question
1) Angle between the hands of the clock
2) Time at a particular angle
3) Position of hands of the clock
4) Faulty clocks
5) Time gained or lost by the clock

6) Mirror / Water Image based time

Type 1: Angle between the hands of the clock

Ex 1: What will be the angle made by the hands of the clock at 7:30?
FORMULA:
|(60H – 11M ) / 2|
Solution:
Angle at 7:30
(60 × 7 – 11 × 30) / 2
420 – 330 / 2 = 90 / 2 = 45 degree
TRICK:
Hour hand → 1 hour = 30 degree
7 hour → 210 degree
1 minute = 1/2 degree
30 minute = 15 degree
Minute hand → 1 minute = 6 degree
30 minute = 180 degree
Now, Angle made by hour hand – Angle made by minute hand
Required Angle = 210 + 15 – 180 = 215 – 180 = 45 degree

Type 2: Time at a particular angle

Ex 1: When will the 180 degree angle be formed between 7:00 and 8:00?
FORMULA:
2 / 11 (A1 – A2)
Where, A1 = Smaller hour time × 30 degree
A2 = Given Angle
Solution:
2 / 11 (7 × 30 – 180)
2 / 11 (210 – 180)
2 / 11 × 30 = 60 / 11 = 5.5/11
The final answer would be 7:5.5/11

Type 3: Position of hands of the clock

Ex 1: How many times a day does hands of the clock make 180 degree angle?
Needles meet each other
Degree In a day In 12 hours

0 degree / 360 degree 22 times 11 times

180 degree 22 times 11 times

90 degree 44 times 22 times

Solution:
Thus, 22 times a day 23 hands of the clock makes 180 degree angle.

Type 4: Faulty clocks

If a clock indicates 4 hours 10 minutes. When the correct time is 4, it is said that the clock is 10 min
too fast. If it indicates 4:40 when the correct time 5, it is said to be 20 minutes too slow.
Ex 1: The clock was set on Thursday, at 4 am. If the clock gains 20 minutes per hour, what will be
the time that the clock shows on Friday, 8: 30 pm?
Solution:
The clock was set on Thursday, at 4 am.
The time from Thursday, 4 am to Friday 8.30 pm = 40 hours, 30 min.
The clock gains 20 minutes per hour. So the clock gains 810 min in 40 hours, 30 minutes.
So the time that the clock will show on Friday, 8.30 pm = 8. 30 + 810 min = 10 am Saturday.

Type 5: Time gained or lost by the clock

These type of problems arise when a clock moves faster or slower than the expected pace. While
solving these problems, it is best to keep track of the correct clock.
Ex 1: A watch gains 5 seconds in 3 minutes and was set right at 8 am. What time will it show at
10pm on the same day?
Solution:
The watch gains 5 seconds in 3 minutes = 100 seconds in 1 hour
From 8am to 10pm on the same day, time passed is 14 hours.
In 14 hours, the watch would have gained 1400 seconds or 23 minutes 20 seconds.

So, when the correct time is 10pm, the watch would show 10 hours 23 minutes 20 seconds per mi-
nute.
Type 6: Mirror / Water image based time
Mirror Image:
If it is a 12 hours clock, then subtract the given time from 11:60 hrs.
And if it is a 24 hours clock, then subtract the given time from 23:60 hrs.
Ex 1: If it's 5:40 in 12-hour clock then what will be the time in mirror?
Solution:
For every mirror image based on a clock,
If it is 12 hours clock, then subtract given timing from 11:60 hours,
And if it is 24 hours clock, then subtract given timing from 23:60 hrs.
Here, it is 12-hour clock, hence, 11:60 - 5:40 = 6:20.
Thus, mirror image will show 6:20 in the clock.

Water Image:
If minutes are less than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:30 hrs.
If minutes are more than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:90 hrs.
Ex 2: If the water image of the clock shows 3 hours 25 minutes, then what will be the actual time?
Solution:
For every water image based on a clock,
If minutes given are less than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:30 hours.
And if minutes given are more than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:90 hrs.
Here, minutes are less than 30, hence, 18:30 - 3:25 = 15:05 i.e. 3 hours 5 minutes
Thus, actual time shows 3 hours 5 minutes in a clock.

Practice questions

M = 480 / 11
M = 43(7/11)
Thus, the clock hands coincides with each other at 43(7/11) past 8.

Q2. A clock is started at noon. By 10 minutes past 5, the hour hand has turned through what de-
gree?
Solution:
Angle traced by hour hand in 12 hours = 360°
Angle traced by hour hand in 5 hours 10 minutes, which is = 31 / 6 hours = 360 degree / 12 × 31 / 6
= 155 degree
Thus, answer is 155 degree.

Q3. Find angle between the minute and hour hand of the clock when hour hand is at 3 and minute
hand is at 2?
Solution:
Time = 3:10
In 1 hour angle covered by hour hand is 30 degrees.
Angle covered by hour hand in 19/6 hours = 19/6 × 30 = 95 degree
Angle covered by minute hand in 1 minute = 6 degree
Angle covered by minute hand in 10 minutes = 6 × 10 = 60 degree
Required angle = 95 – 60 = 35 degree
Thus, ‘35 degrees’ is the correct alternative.

Q4. Find the angle between hour hand and minute hand when the clock shows 6:12 PM?
Solution:
Using the formula to find the angle between hour hand and minute hand
Θ = 30 H - 11/2 M
Where H= hour hand
And M = minute hand
Hour hand is in between 6 and 7, 30 × 6 = 180.
For minute hand
11/2 (12) = 66
The difference between our hand and minute hand will be 180 – 66 = 114 degree

Thus, 114 degree is the correct answer.

Q5. Answer the following question based on the given diagram.

If the mirror image shows 1:19 in a clock, then what will be actual time?
Solution:
Here, it is a 12 – hours clock, hence, 11:60 – 1:19 = 10:41.
Thus, the actual time will be 10:41.

Level 2
Q1. If today is the first day of the month which falls on a Saturday, then which day of the week
would coincide with the 31st?
Solution:
Day + 7 = same day
Today (1st day) = Saturday = 8th day, 15th day, 22nd day and 29th day
30th day → Sunday
31st day → Monday
Thus, it will be a Monday on the 31st day.

Q2. If the time at present is 7:42 am, what will be the time after 72332 minutes?
Solution:
Minutes in 24 hours = 1440 minutes
Minutes in 50 days = 1440 × 50 = 72000
72332 minutes = 72000 minutes + 300 minutes + 32 minutes (time will be same after 24 hours)
72332 minutes = 7:42 am + 5 hours + 32 minutes (5 hours = 300 minutes)
= 12:42 am + 32 minutes = 1:14 pm
Thus, the answer is 1:14 pm.

Q3. A clock was set at right time at 7:00 am. It loses 3 minutes every hour. A man makes it correct
at 12:00 noon. What is the real time when the clock shows 3:35 pm?
Solution:
When the clock shows 12:00 noon, it loses 15 minutes.
Thus, the man makes it correct to 12:15 pm.
From 12:15 pm to 3:15 pm, clock loses 9 minutes.
From 3:15 pm to 3:35 pm, clock loses 1 minute.
Therefore, total loss in time is 10 minutes.
Thus, when clock shows 3:35 pm, the real time is 3:35 pm + 10 minutes = 3:45 pm.

Q4. Clock hanging on the wall of office shows 9 o’clock in the morning and it shows 6 o’clock in the
evening of the same day. How many degrees had the hour hand rotated to move from 9 to 6?
Solution:
One hour covers 30 degrees.
Number of Hours from 9 o’clock to 6 o’clock = 9 hours
9 × 30 degrees = 270 degrees
Thus, ‘270 degrees’ is the correct answer.

Q5. If water image shows 3:27 in a clock, then what will be the actual timing?
Here minutes are less than 30. So, 18:30 – 3:27 = 15:03 i.e. 3:03
Thus, actual time will be 3:03.

Level 3
Q1. If mirror image shows 8:18 in a 24 hours clock, then what will be the actual timing in 12 hours
format?
Solution:
For every mirror image based on a clock,
If it is 12 hours clock, then subtract the given timing from 11:60 hrs.
If it is 24 hours clock, then subtract the given timing from 23:60 hrs.
Here it is 24 hours clock, therefore, 23:60 – 8:18 = 15:42
Thus, actual time will be 15:42 i.e. 3:42 in 12 hours format.

Q2. An accurate clock shows 10 o'clock in the morning. Through how many degrees will the hour
hand rotate when the clock shows 4 o'clock in the afternoon?
Solution:
We know that angle traced by hour hand in 12 hours = 360°
From 10 to 4, there are 6 hours.
Angle traced by the hour hand in 6 hours = 6 × 360/12 = 180°.
Thus, the hour hand will rotate 180°.

Q3. A clock is set at 9 am. The clock gains 10 minutes in 24 hours. What will be the true time when
the clock indicates 2 pm on the following day?
Solution:
The time gap between 9 am on a day to 2 pm on following day = 29 hours.
Given, the clock gains 10 minutes in 24 hours.
⇒ 24 hours 10 minutes of the given clock = 24 hours of correct clock.
⇒ 145/6 hours (24 × 10/60) of this clock = 24 hours of correct clock.
Thus, 29 hours of this clock = (24 × 6 × 29)/145 = 144/5 = 28 hours 48 minutes.
Hence, the true time is 28 hours 48 minutes past 9 am.

Q4. How many degrees will the minute hand move, in the same time in which the second hand
move 4800 degrees?
Solution:
Minute hand moves 4800 ÷ 60 = 80
Therefore, minute hand will move 80 degrees.

Q5. Rahman was in a hurry to meet his friend Ismail who has come from abroad. He started from
his home at 3 O’clock. When he looked at his watch he found that one hour ago it was four times as
many minutes before eight o’clock . How many minutes is it until eight o’clock when Rahman
looked at his watch?
Solution:
Minutes between 3 o’clock and 8 o’ clock is 60 x 5 = 300 minutes Let Rahman look at his watch x
minutes before 8o’clock. Therefore, the time now is (300-x) minutes after 3 o’clock. The time one
hour ago would be (300 –x – 60) = 240-x minutes past 3 o’clock. This is given to be 4 times as many
minutes to 8 o' clock since he looked his watch. Therefore, 240 - x = 4x 240 = 4x + x = 5x So x =
48.Rahman would have looked at his watch 48 minutes before 8 o' clock which is 7.12.
