A. Read the following definitions of AL and give your brief understanding of it inter-
relating it with one another.(10 points each)

1. Schmitt & Celce-Murcia (2002) claim that Applied Linguistics is using what we know
about (a) language, (b) how it is learned, and (c) how it is used, in order to achieve some
purpose or solve some problem in the real world”.

One of the areas in applied linguistics deals with development of theories in Language
Acquisition, whether it be in the first or the second language. Through Applied
Linguistics, the scope of our perceptions on how we can improve the teaching-learning
process of the language is developed, modified, or restructured to optimize our
teaching methodologies.

2. Grabe (2002) points out that the focus of applied linguistics is on trying to resolve
language-based problems that people encounter in the real world, whether they be
learners, teachers, supervisors, academics, lawyers, service providers, those who need
social services, test takers, policy developers, dictionary makers, translators, or a whole
range of business clients.

The application of Applied linguistics varies on the discipline a person is involved or a

part of. For example, among teachers, Applied Linguistics allows educators to improve
the teaching-learning process by updating or modifying processes that are deemed
irrelevant or necessary to be improved. Through introspection on various theories in
Language Acquisition and Teaching, teachers are able to improve their strategies
depending on what situation they are in.

3. Douglas Brown (1987) has considered Applied Linguistics a subset of linguistics for
several decades, and it has been interpreted to mean the applications of linguistics
principles to certain more or less practical matters.

As a distinction between Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, the first primarily focuses
on the language, while the latter focuses on the practical application of language
studies. Hence, although it can be said that a part of Linguistics can be liken to applied
linguistics, the former cannot fully include it, because the latter can solve issues in
various disciplines, whether it be communication, teaching, media or what, while the
former is mostly a concern of teachers of the language or scholars of the language.
B. What is the concern of Linguistics Applied in the following sub-field Applied
Linguistics? Choose 5. (10 points each)

a. Language Acquisition g. Language Corpora

b. Language Teaching h. Sociolinguistics
c. Discourse Analysis i. Pragmatics.
d. World Englishes j. Stylistics
e. Mass Media k. Sex and Gender
f. Lexicography l. Language attrition

Language Acquisition focuses on the way humans acquire and develop communicative
competence in a particular language. Some of the more prominent theories in
contemporary LA fields are the 5 hypotheses of Krashen.

Language Teaching is somehow inseparable with language acquisition. Most studies

that fall under language teaching are a reflection or a response to theories emerging or
developed in Language acquisition. Exploration of strategies and methodologies in
teaching are the main concern of this sub-field.

Discourse Analysis deals with analysis of language beyond the sentence in a particular
social context. Discourse analysis can be used on written, oral, and even sign languages.

Stylistics focuses on the interpretation of texts, similar to discourse, it can be

interpretation of oral or written texts where language devices that are considered to
produce expressive or literary style are present.

Sociolinguistics deals with the study of the sociological aspects of language. The
discipline concerns itself with the role of language in maintaining the social roles in a
community.

C. Choose one area of Applied Linguistics and develop researchable area on application
of any linguistic approach to resolve an issue on its field. Follow format below. (20

Topic/Title:

Perceptions of Second Language Educators on Teaching Listening

General Objective:

The main objective of this study is to explore the different themes/subthemes of

perceptions among Second Language Educators on Teaching Listening in their
language class, specifically, their perception in the importance of listening as well as
their orientation on the different strategies on imploring listening activities in their
classroom will be used as input for the data collection.

Theoretical Framework: (Guide theory/ies)

Stephen Krashen’s Second Language Acquisition will be used as the main basis of this
study. Likewise, the concept of teacher cognition will also be implored in this study.

Research Design: (Qualitative or Quantitative? Why?). Discuss a bit.

The design of this research would be qualitative, so as to explore and analyze the lived
experiences of language educators on teaching listening in a qualitative manner. Rather
than sampling on a larger population, which will be difficult at this time, the researcher
would gather insights/ reflections and other relevant inputs from the participants that
would allow a comprehensive triangulation of data.

Good luck!
