Here's the complete list of Spanish subject pronouns.


Singular
yo = I
tú = you (familiar)
usted = you (formal)
él = he
ella = she
Plural
Nosotros = we
ustedes = you (plural)
ellos = they (masc.)
ellas = they (fem.)
The verb “ser” is the most irregular verb in Spanish. We will learn how to use it as follows:
To the verb “ser” (to be), is conjugated as follows:
Yo soy
Tú eres
Él, ella, usted es
Nosotros somos
Ellos, ellas, ustedes son

Note: The verb forms are the same for él, ella and usted as are the verb forms for ellos, ellas and ustedes.

In Spanish the subject pronouns are not always required. This is because the verb endings can
indicate who is performing the action.
Soy profesor. (Yo is not necessary.)
I am a professor.
Somos estudiantes. (Nosotros is not necessary.)
We are students.
Eres mi amigo. (Tú is not necessary.)
You are my friend.

Subject pronouns are often used for clarification. For example, the verb form “es” is ambiguous.
Ud. es
él es
ella es
Therefore, to distinguish between "you are," "he is," and "she is," it may be necessary to use the
subject pronoun. Often, the conversation implies the subject of the verb. In such cases the subject
pronoun may be omitted.

Subject pronouns are often used for emphasis.


Ella es estudiante y yo soy profesor.
Here there is no ambiguity with respect to the verb. The subject pronoun is merely adding
emphasis:
She is a student and I am a professor.
To make a negative sentence simply place the word “no” before the verb.
Yo no soy Pedro. I am not Pedro.
Ella no es estudiante. She is not a student.
