I remember Darfur, at least I think I do. It was part of the troubles in Sudan, wasn’t it?
Pictures of a barren landscape and refugee camps come into my mind. Horrible, but
quickly filed away in the file called ‘Atrocities’ that I know about but prefer not to
examine too closely.
I can’t do that anymore because Abdul Musa Adam has taken me there.
Driven out of Darfur, his village massacred by the Janjaweed (irregular government
forces) when he was seven, Abdul, his younger brother Yusuf and two friends of his
parents,

This is an incredible story about the human spirit and the deep rooted desire to
survive. The tragedies of Abdul’s life are unimaginable but important for those of us
who live securely in peace to hear. Ros Wynne Jones has herself spent time as a writer
in refugee camps in Africa and is able to truly and vividly convey Abdul’s own story as
related to her by Abdul through a translator. This is a deeply moving book where,
after all Abdul’s terrible suffering, he finds human kindness and some sort of peace in
the end, in England.

To learn what it really means to be a refugee - read this book. To learn what it’s really
like trying to find somewhere safe to live - read this book. To learn what the human
being can endure - read this book. To learn how important kindness is - read this
book.
I learnt so much from this book and was with Abdul from the beginning to the end.
Gasping, crying, smiling, hoping... once started I had to know what happened. I wish
Abdul every success and happiness for his future and hope that one day he will find
his brother. Thank you for writing your story.

An amazing and shocking story

Most of us have very little idea about the journeys which refugees undertake and this
story is revelatory. I would have loved the book to be longer, and to know more about
Musa's journey before he got to the UK. The story is told in a factual way and there is
so much in it I would have liked to hear more about. Often books are too long but the
opposite is true of this one, it's a huge story told in a fairly brief way. However I
suspect that's because there are parts that are hard (or too traumatic) for him to
remember. Nevertheless it's a fantastic story and I loved it.

An inspiring story

This is an inspiring true story that shows just how resilient humans can be even after
appalling things happen. This young man saw both his parents die, lost touch with his
brother , lost his uncle who looked after him and arrived in the uk underneath a lorry.
He is now helping to train the queen’s racehorses.
