Year 9

Science Research
Assignment
Dear Students,

Your Science Research assignment comprises TWO tasks. Both tasks are
mandatory to complete.

TASK : To conduct a scientific investigation of variation of frequency of sound with height

of liquid filled in a glass.

Final product: a. Task 1 (Investigation sheet)

Submission date: 20 April 2021

Students will be presenting their project. This would be followed by a question answer
session with each student individually regarding their project.
TASK : To conduct an experiment to investigate how frequency of
sound changes with level of water in a glass.

Students will watch following video.

To measure frequency of musical glass use an app from your phone.

INVESTIGATION SHEET
AIM To measure the frequency of sound in a glass which has different amount of
water.
HYPOTHESIS If the water is more then then the lowest frequency and f the wager is less
then the highest frequency.
INDEPENDENT Material of glass
VARIABLE Force applied on the glass
Depth of water
DEPENDENT frequency of sound
VARABLE
MATERIALS/ 3 Glass, application in phone which measures frequency, water, spoon
EQUIPMENT
REQUIRED
PRECAUTIONS Don’t spill the water
Noise
PROCEDURE 1. Put different amount of water in different glasses (1 full, I half and 1
quarter)
2. Use the spoon to tap on the glass
3. While tapping measure the frequency of the sound of the different taps on
the glasses
4. Change the water level in a glass a little bit and the hear the different
sounds and will have different frequency on the same glass

RESULT (with a graph)

\
when adding different amounts of water to the glass, should have noticed that the pitch of the sound
changed depending on the water level, the more water added to the glass, the lower the pitch of the
sound could be heard. The lesser the water in the glass, the higher the pitch of the sound could be
heard.

CONCLUSION

The glasses with different amounts of water will make different sounds. The sound comes when
different of amounts of air vibrates around, carrying the sound to the ears. Hitting the glass causes the
vibration and make a sound which is easily heard by humans. A glass with less water has a higher
pitch and the glass with lots of water has a lower pitch. Empty glass has air, so the glass vibrates
quickly when it is hit. Slower vibration in a full glass of water.
