Who, me?

Being aware of Ethnocentricism

Read the following statements below and try to answer the activity on a sheet of paper. You
don’t need to submit this on moodle.

What do you think about other cultures’ values and traditions as compared to your own? On a
scale of 1 to 7, indicate your level of agreement with each statement shown below. A score of 7
means you strongly agree; a score of 1 means you strongly disagree.

___ 1) Most other cultures are backward compared with my culture.

___ 2) I see people who are similar to me as virtuous.
___ 3) The values and customs of other cultures have nothing to do with me.
___ 4) People in other cultures just don’t know what’s good for them.
___ 5) Most people would be happier if they lived like the people in my culture.
___ 6) Lifestyles in other cultures are not as valid as those in my culture.
___ 7) I do not trust people who are different.
___ 8) It is hard for me to respect the customs and traditions of other cultures.
___ 9) Other cultures should try to be more like my culture.
___ 10) People from other cultures act in strange and unusual ways when they come into my
culture.

When you’re finished, add up your score, which should range from 10 to 70. That is your
general ethnocentricism score. If your score is 40 or below, you are relatively low on
ethnocentrisicm. A score above 40 indicates relatively high ethnocentricism.
