Ogun state is located in the South Western Part of Nigeria. It lies within latitude 60N and 80N
and Longitude 21/20 E and 50 E. Ogun state is bounded in the West by Republic of Benin, on
the East by Ondo and Osun States, to the north by Oyo and Osun States and the South is
Lagos and Atlantic Ocean. Ogun state has an area of about 16,000sqkm, the state was created
in 1970 by Gen. Murtala Muhammed led military government, in actual fact, the state was
among the area that makes the whole western region and its emergence was a renew of the
fusion of Egba and Ijebu Provinces. The capital of Ogun State is Abeokuta which is about
103km to Lagos and 79km to Ibadan, Ota is the most industrialized area in Ogun State and is
about 17km to Lagos while other notable towns such as Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode are about
65km and 75km to Lagos respectively. The political administration of Ogun State is as
established by the 1999 constitution which established separation of powers among the three
arms of government i.e. Executive, Legislative and Judiciary

The first civilian governor of Ogun State was Chief Olabisi Onabanjo in the first republic;
after which was Chief Olusegun Osoba (1999-2003), Otunba Gbenga Daniel (May 29, 2003-

geographical entity presently known as Ogun State was part of the former Western State in
Nigeria with the seat of administration in Ibadan and it was administered under major
provinces such as Oyo, Ibadan, Ondo, Abeokuta and Ijebu. The Abeokuta and Ijebu
Provinces were divided into two divisions each, thus, Abeokuta province was divided into
Egba and Yewa divisions while Ijebu divisions was divided into Ijebu and Remo divisions.
These two provinces i.e Abeokuta and Ijebu were later merged to form the present Ogun
State. The state derived its name ‘Ogun’ from a River Ogun which traverses major parts of
the state.

AGO-IWOYE REGION
The University town of Ago-Iwoye is located in an area where the basement complex rocks
comes in contact with the sedimentary rock formation of the south western part of Nigeria, in
an area comprising of series of hills which have a general uniform height of between 76 to 92
meters above the sea level. The drainage pattern is generally dendritic in nature.

Ago-Iwoye lies at a distance of about 700km from the equator at longitude 30o55’east of the
Greenwich Meridian and at latitude 60o56’north of the equator. The town is located in Ijebu
North Local Government Area which has its headquarters at Ijebu-Igbo.

The Local Government is bounded in the east by both Ijebu East and Ijebu North East Local
Government Areas, on the west by Remo North Local Government Area. To the south of the
town are Ijebu-Ode and Odogbolu Local Government Areas and to the north are Oluyole and
Ona-Ara Local Government Areas of Oyo State.

The main river drainage across the region is river Ome, other rivers in Ago-Iwoye include:
Erigba, Olumagbon, Isinusi, Alagbo, Okuwuru etc. There are two forms of soil in Ago-Iwoye
which are: Affisoil and Osisols. Ago-Iwoye enjoys a tropical low land climate characterized
by wet and dry season.

The annual temperature ranges between 250c and 320c. Ago-Iwoye is about 15kilometers to
Ijebu-Ode and 12kilometers to Lagos and 92kilometers to Abeokuta. The soils of the region
were formed from the regoliths of the Pre-Cambriam complex formation especially medium
grained granites, gneiss, quartzite schist and biotite gneiss. There are two classes of soils in
the region, these are Affisols and Oxisols. The Affisols are common in the northern part of
the region towards Onigambari Forest Reserve while the Oxisols are common towards Ijebu-
Ode in the south.

The town share common boundaries with Ijebu-Igbo and at Mamu with Oyo State. The town
has about 206villages where principally the occupation is farming. The origin of Ago-Iwoye
dates back to about 600years ago and it is always related to the general history of Yorubas,
there are eight quarters making up the area called Ago-Iwoye and they are Isamuro, Idode,
Odosinusi, Igan, Imosun, Imere, Imososi and Ibipe.

Physical aspects of the University locality within the context of Ogun State
GEO-PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES OF OGUN STATE

The geo-physical attributes of Ogun State comprises all the climatic and environmental
endowments of the state. The geology of Ogun State comprises of sedimentary rocks and
basement complex rocks. The Sedimentary formation is of Pre-Cambrian formation which
consists of:

i. Migmatite – Schist Complex

ii. Schist Belt
iii. Older Granites

The Basement Complex extends from Odorasoyin in Ijebu-Igbo to Omo forest in South-
Eastern part of the state. The sedimentary rocks unit consists of Abeokuta, Ewekoro, Oshosun
and Ilaro formations which runs from East to west of the state. The relative relief of the state
shows that the state consists of: -
i. Undulating coastal plains, creeks and lagoons of less than 40m height
ii. Flood plains beside the creeks, lagoons and rivers
iii. The rocks outcrops, rugged and dissecting hills.

Some of the rivers in Ogun State are: River Ogun, Yewa and River Yemoji. There are also
second order streams which are large enough to be dammed. It is important to note that River
Osun and Ogun provide much of the water for domestic and industrial purposes in the state. It
is also noteworthy that the state derived its name from river ogun – the major river in the
state.

The climate is characterized by high monthly and annual temperature with high rainfall, high
relative humidity, high potential and actual evaporation high prevailing wind, high insulation
clad cover and low atmosphere pressure. The average annual temperature of the state 26 0C.
The mean diurnal minimum temperature varies from 21.80C to 24.340C. The mean maximum
temperature varies from 33.90C to 37.10C.The mean diurnal and annual temperature range
varies between 8oC and 10oC during the dry season and between 3.5oC and 5oC during the
wet season

There are 3 broad groups of soil in the state: -

i. Ferruginous tropical soil.
ii. Ferralitic Tropical soil.
iii. Hydromophic tropical soil.
The Ferriginous tropical soil are of small proportion and are dominant in the Northern part of
the State. The Ferralitic tropical soil are derived from sedimentary rocks of Mesozoic era.
The Hydromorphic soils are dominant in riverine and water logged areas of the state
especially in Ogun Waterside and Yewa South Local Governments.

The natural vegetation is classified into two (2).

i. Humid forest
ii. Savannah vegetation.
The humid forest depends on the edaphic and climatic factors which could be further
subdivided into (1) Salt and freshwater swamp or mangrove forest and (2) Lowland rain
forest which is dominant throughout the state while the mangrove forest is confined to
riverine areas and consists of trees that are 30m and 50m high with noticeable aerial and tilted
roots.
PRACTISING QUESTIONS
1. Describe briefly the physical environment of Ogun State under the following headings:
a. Geology
b. Relief
c. Climate
d. Soils
e. Vegetation
Lecture Week 3
Social aspects of the University locality within the context of Ogun State
SOCIAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC ATTRIBUTES OF OGUN STATE

Demographic attribute refers to the population distribution of the state. Population constitutes
an important component of the resource base and the development potential of any state.
Elements of the population that are most relevant include the size, rate of growth, spatial
distribution, demographic structure and quality. These characteristics are important for
decision making, formulation of policy to guide growth and development.

The first comprehensive census was done in 1952 when Ogun State was still part of western
region of Nigeria. The report of that year shows that the population of Ogun State was 852,
130. In 1963 another population census was carried out throughout Nigeria which put the
population of Ogun State at 1,550,966 which represents about 3% of the total population of
Nigeria as at then. In 1991 when another census was carried out, the population of Ogun State
was 2,333727. There was an increase of about 782,760 from the previous census. The last
population census that was carried out in 2006 put the population figure of Ogun State at
3,751,140. This implies that the population figure of Ogun State is on the increase every year
and it is projected that by 2020 the population of Ogun State would have reached 7million.

This is due to its proximity to Lagos State which is highly congested. The significant
advantage of Lagos congestion has resulted in increase in population of areas very close to
Lagos state. These areas include Sango Ota, Mowe Ibafo, Asese, Arepo and Magboro to
mention but few. Majority of some of the local government areas in Ogun State are in the
urban areas with very high population. These Local Government areas include Abeokuta
South, Sagamu, Ikenne, Ifo, Remo North, Ijebu North, Ado-Odo Ota, Ijebu-Ode and some
parts of Obafemi Owode L.G.A while the remaining L.G. areas are located within the rural
areas with low population.

On gender basis, the population of Ogun State shows that there are more females than males
in the state. The females constitute about 51% while the male population was put at 49%
during the 2006 population census. The ethnic ratio shows that the people of Egba are more
in population than other ethnic divisions followed by the Ijebus, and then, the Yewas while
the Aworis are in the minority group of least population.

PRACTISING QUESTIONS
1. What are the factors responsible for the increase in Population of Ogun State?
2. Enumerate the importance of Population Census to Ogun State.

The culture of Ogun State is diverse and this due to the fact that there are so many ethnic
groups with constitutes Ogun State. Culture is the way of life designed, institutionalized and
shared by a group of people living in a historically specific geographical area.

Allocation of authority and state administration prior to the emergence of modern Ogun State
was by monarch. The two major provinces – Egba and Ijebu were ruled by Alake of Egba and
Awujale of Ijebuland respectively. The advent of modern political administration and
democracy led to a reduction in the degree and control the Obas have on the people of Ogun
State. They are still however the custodian of the traditional norms and values.

The major ethnic groups i.e Egbas, Ijebus, Remos, Yewas, Aworis, Eguns all have their
cultures and traditions. The Ijebus, for instance, are noted for Agemo festival, while the
Egbas are noted for festivals such as Oro and Egungun Festival and Lishabi day festival.
Oronna Day is common among the people of Yewa. All these celebrations are meant to mark
the emergence of their ethnic groups as well as memory of their founding father.

The royal title of paramount ruler of Egbaland is Alake of Egba land and the name of the
present Monarch of that royal seat is Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo. The royal title of the
paramount ruler in Yewaland is Olu of Yewaland and the present occupier of the post is Oba
Kehinde Olugbenle. The Akarigbo of Remoland is the royal title of paramount ruler in
Remoland. The present occupier of that post is Oba Babatunde Ajayi. While Oba (Dr.) Sikiru
Kayode Adetona is the Paramount ruler of Ijebuland whose title is the Awujale of Ijebuland.

The people of Ogun State are very social. As a result, there are so many associations and
social clubs in Ogun State and they include: Abeokuta social club, Elites Club, Obanta Club,
Ijebu-Ode club. More importantly, in Ijebuland, the social clubs are grouped by ages and it is
