The Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Award, named aft er t he 11t h President of India and aerospace
scient ist A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is awarded by t he Government of Tamil Nadu in recognit ion of
cont ribut ions on scient ific development , humanit ies and st udent s' welfare.[1][2]

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award Announcement

On 31 July 2015, Then Chief Minist er of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalit haa announced aft er t he deat h of
Kalam (27 July 2015)[3] t hat an award will be given annually in his name. The award prize will be
five hundred t housand Indian rupees (about US$7,700), a cert ificat e and a gold medal weighing
eight grams.[4] The Chief Minist er st at ed "Vibrant India; Prosperous Tamil Nadu. To st rengt hen
t his, I have ordered t o inst it ut e an award in memory of Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The award will be
given away every year during Independence Day. It will carry a cash prize of ₹ 5 lakh, a gold medal
weighing eight gram and a cert ificat e."[1] In addit ion, t he Government of Tamil Nadu would
commemorat e his birt hday each year as "Yout h Awakening Day", on 15 Oct ober.[1] He was born in
Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu on 15 Oct ober 1931.[5][6]

The award was scheduled t o be given out every year on Independence Day in India (15 August )
st art ing wit h 2015.[7] The first award was given t o t he Program Direct or of t he Microwave
Remot e Sensing Program and scient ist at t he Indian Space Research Organisat ion, N. Valarmat hi,
on t he 69t h Independence Day of India, 15 August 2015.[8]

Since 2008, t he Nat ional Innovat ion Foundat ion, a body of t he Depart ment of Science and
Technology celebrat es Children's Creat ivit y and Innovat ion Day each year wit h "Dr APJ Abdul
Kalam IGNITE awards" in his name.[9][10]

UAV.[14]

2019 – K. Sivan, an eminent scient ist and t he chairman of Indian Space Research
Organisat ion.[15]
