India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium is a book, writ t en by t he 11t h President of India A P
J Abdul Kalam and Y. S. Rajan. The book was writ t en by t he duo in t he year 1998, before Kalam's
t enure as President .[1] It t alks about Kalam's ideas for India's fut ure and for developing India.

Overview
The book examines in dept h t he weaknesses and st rengt hs of India, and offers a vision of how
India can emerge t o be among t he world's t op four economic powers by t he year 2020. The
Vision is dedicat ed t o a t en-year-old girl whom Kalam met during one of his t alks and asked her
about her ambit ions, t o which t he young girl replied, "I want t o live in a developed India."[2]

In his book India 2020, Kalam st rongly advocat es an act ion plan t o develop India int o a st rong
nat ion by t he year 2020. He regards his nat ion as a knowledge superpower and developed nat ion.
The book describes t he present and fut ure scenario in India and developed count ries. It
compares t he various st at ist ical dat a and explains how India can improve it . Kalam explains t he
import ance of science and t echnology for t he development of India.

In chapt er 1 of t he book t he aut hors st ress t he import ance of a vision for India, using nat ions like
US, China, Malaysia, and Israel as examples.[3] However, t hey also point out t hat t his vision should
be original, rat her t han imit at ing ot her nat ions.

In t he book, Kalam had also said t hat it should be t he dream of all t he cit izens t o see India as a
developed count ry.

Reception

According t o The Times of India, "Seldom does one, in t hese t roubled t imes, see such a lucid
marshaling of fact s and figures t o bolst er t he t hesis t hat India is mere t wo decades away from
super-power st at us". The Statesman reviewed t he book as, "A book of revelat ion in a plain
wrapper".

The book has been t ranslat ed int o mult iple languages.
