Arun Tiwari

Arun Kumar Tiwari (born 10 February 1955) is an Indian missile scient ist , aut hor, and professor. He
has writ t en several books[1] and co-aut hored 5 books wit h Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, including Wings
of Fire, t he aut obiography of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former president of India. Published in 1999,
Wings of Fire has become a modern classic wit h over 30 reprint s selling over a million copies and
was t ranslat ed int o 18 languages.[2]

Born in Meerut , Ut t ar Pradesh, aft er complet ing his mast ers in mechanical engineering from GB
Pant Universit y for Agricult ure & Technology, Tiwari joined Defence Research & Development
Organisat ion (DRDO) in 1982 as a missile scient ist . He spent t he next 15 years involved in India's
milit ary missile development effort s. He developed India's first Tit anium air bot t le used in
‘Trishul’ and ‘Akash’ missiles and designed Airframes for bot h t he missiles.[3][4]

In 1992 Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam appoint ed Tiwari as t he Program Direct or t o develop civilian spin-
offs of Defence Technologies. Arun Tiwari developed India's first Coronary St ent wit h
Cardiologist Dr. B Soma Raju well known as Kalam-Raju St ent . This led t o t he creat ion of Care
Foundat ion and lat er t he Care Hospit als, Hyderabad. Tiwari was awarded t he Defence
Technology Spin-Off Award in 1998 for his role in developing t he st ent .[5]

He is also credit ed for st ruct uring and set t ing up t he Pan-African e-Net work Project which is
India's first sat ellit e-based t elemedicine syst em. He set up t he first link of t he project and
est ablished Pan-Africa e-Net work of Telecommunicat ions Consult ant s India Lt d (TCIL) t hat now
connect s Universit ies and Hospit als across t he African cont inent s wit h t heir Indian
count erpart s.[6][7]
From 2002 t o 2007, Tiwari was a member of t he advisory t eam t o President of India, Dr APJ
Abdul Kalam.

Current ly, he is t he Secret ary of Care Foundat ion (ht t ps://www.carefoundat ion.org.in/) and t he
Plat inum Jubilee Ment or of CSIR - IICT.[8]

Arun Tiwari current ly t eaches at School of Management Sciences, Universit y of Hyderabad, as an

adjunct professor.

In March 2019 Tiwari was invit ed t o speak at TEDx MVSR Engineering college in Hyderabad.[9]
