The title of Beckett’s play Waiting for Godot is quite suitable .

and significant ’There are two key words in the title ‘ Waiting’ and ‘ Godot

There is a great controversy about the identity of Godot .

WAITING FOR GODOT AS AN ABSURDIST PLAY

Samuel Beckett is one of the Absurdist dramatists and so his play ‘ Waiting for Godot’ have the features of
the Absurd Theatre

The Absurdist play mainly deals with the theme of alienation and Loneliness.

This is true for Waiting for Godot. Both Vladimir and Eastragon are lonely figures and so Pozzo and Lucky.
They are tortured by others.

Godot is an absent character in Waiting for Godot.

He remains one of the riddles of the play.

The dramatist does not tell us clearly who he is and what he represents.

Beckett himself has said that he himself does not know who Godot is.

He says: “If I know, I would have said in the play”.

So Critics have given several interpretations.

Thus Godot is God or a mythical human being whose arrival is expected to change the situation

Godot represents peace and rest for the tramps.
