DESCRIPTION Ai'iD OPERATION

1. DESCRIPTION
A. General (Ref. Fig. 1)
This indicator is a ratiometer-type instrument operating in
conjunction with an inductor pressure transmitter to provide
indication of the oil pressure in the main gear box. It
consists essentially of :
- a wide deflection ratiometer movement:
- an electronic sub-assembly, which energizes the associated
pressure transmitter and processes the electrical data
delivered by the latter so as to operate the ratiometer
movement.
The indicator operates on 28 VDC and the electrical
connections are made via a-standard IO-pin receptacle.
The indicator has a device which returns the pointer to zero
in the event of a power failure.
Integral lighting, supplied from a 28 VDC source, is used
to illuminate the presentation.

(2) Ratiometer Movement

This unit consists of two field coils connected in series
and a return coil supplied with a constant unidirectional
current.
Figure 5 shows the vectors representing the magnetic
fields of these coils : h' is the field produced by the
field coils, h is that produced by the return coil and
H is the resulting field.
The combined action of the two fields, h and h', causes
rotation of the magnet which stabilizes in the direction
defined by the resultant H.
(3) Electronic Sub-Assembly
The two transmitter ceils form a bridge circuit with the
two identical resistors R. This bridge is fed with a sine
wave generated by the electronic sub-assembly, which also
includes :
(a) A demodulation and amplification circuit which
converts the unbalance in the bridge circuit into a
DC voltage whose polarity depends on the direction
of the unbalance. This voltage is applied to the
ratiometer's field coils.
(b) A power supply feeding a constant unidirectional
current to the return coil.
B. Detailed Operation
The schematic diagram of the complete electronic sub-assembly
is shown in figure 6. Operation of this sub-assembly can be
divided into four main functions :
- main power supply,
- sine wave generator,
- transmitter power supply and demodulation circuit,
- ratiometer driving circuit.

(1) Main Power Supply (Ref. Fig. 7)

The + 28 VDC supply voltage is applied to diodes CR301
and CR302, and then to low-value resistor Rl via fuse Fl.
Zener diode VRl absorbs voltage peaks, while Cl acts as
a smoothing filter.
The + input of amplifier 21-3 is biased by Zener diode
VR2 (point A); it is then at + 6.2 V with respect to the
28V return line (ground). The output of 21-3 drives
transistor Ql connected in a common-collector configuration.
The emitter of Ql feeds the voltage divider consisting of
R2 (in parallel with R3) and R4. The ratio of these
resistors is such that + 7 V is obtained at the emitter
of Ql with respect to point A; this voltage is smoothed
out by capacitor C2.
The voltage at point A is applied to an impedance-matching
circuit consisting of Zl-1 whose output, smoothed by C4,
provides the 0 V reference while the 28 V return line
provides - 6.2 V.
In addition, + 6.2 V is provided by means of a network
consisting of VR3, RS and R6.
Consequently, the following output voltages are delivered
by the main power supply to the various circuits :
+ 27 v, + 7 v, + 6.2 V, 0 V and - 6.2 V.
(2) Sine Wave Generator (Ref. Fig. 8)
This circuit comprises an operational amplifier 2102-4
connected up as an integrator-using capacitors Cl03 and
ClO4.
Operation of this integrator can be described as follows :
(a) When field effect transistor Q103 is not conducting,
the - input of 2102-4 is connected via R123 to a
point which is positive with respect to the + input.
(b) When Q103 is conducting, the - input of 2102-4 is
connected via R123 to a point which is negative with
respect to the + input.

A triangular-shaped signal is delivered by 2102-4

(symmetrical sawtooth wave). This signal is fed to 21-4
via a filter comprising R124, R9, CS and C6; 21-4 then
delivers a sine wave which is symmetrical with respect
to 0 v.
21-2 is a zero comparator which drives Q103.
(3) Transmitter Power Supply and Demodulation Circuit
(Ref. Fig. 9)
This circuit comprises :
(a) A measuring bridge, composed of the coils Ll and L2
in the associated transmitter and two identical
resistors R302 and R303 in the indicator.
The bridge is fed with a sine wave from the power
amplifier circuit which comprises 2102-3 and two
complementary transistors, 0104 and 4105.
'When the impedances of Ll and L2 are equal, the
voltages at points F and H are equal.
When the impedances vary (in opposite directions from
one another), a sine wave appears between F and H;
this sine wave is out of phase with the reference
sine wave; the phase lag or phase lead is determined
by the direction of the unbalance between Ll and L2.
(b) A differential amplifier 2101-3.
The values of resistors RlOl, RlO2, R103 and R3Ol
give the following ratio :
RlOl z-sR301 k
R102 R103
2101-3 delivers, with respect to 0 V :
vc = + ‘VF - VH) k

This output thus provides a sine wave which is in

phase or 180° out of phase with the reference sine
wave: its amplitude is proportional to the unbalance
of the bridge circuit.

(c) A demodulation circuit, consisting of 2101-4, QlOl,

2101-2 and 2101-l.
The reference sine wave is shaped and inverted by
2101-4, and drives field effect transistor QlOl.
When the gate of QlOl is biased by the positive half-
wave, this transistor conducts.
When the gate is biased by the negative half-wave,
this transistor is blocked.
When the transistor conducts, resistors RlO4 and R106
can be considered to have a common point, and
= vc.
vD
When the transistor is blocked, the + input of 2101-2
is grounded (0 V)and since R104 = R105,
= -vc.
vD

(d) An amplifier 2101-1, connected up as a voltage

integrator: this greatly reduces the ripple in the
DC voltage applied to R201.
This circuit provides, at E, a voltage which is :
- null when the impedances of Ll and L2 are balanced;
- positive when the unbalance is in one direction:
- negative when the unbalance is in the other
direction.
These voltages are proportional to the unbalance
of the bridge circuit,

(4) Ratiometer Driving Circuit (Ref. Fig. 10)

The DC voltage at E (positive, negative or null) is
applied to field coils L3 and L4 of the ratiometer via
2102-l. If the wiper of potentiometer R203 is at the 0 V
potential, the current in L3 and L4 flows in either
direction depending on the polarity of E and is equal to :
E
R201 + R202
Return coil LS is fed with a constant current, flowing
at all times in the same direction, by means of the
circuit comprising Zener diode VRlOl, amplifier 2102-2
and transistor Ql02,
The indicator is calibrated by means of potentiometers
R203 and R202.
Potentiometer R203 is used to shift the symmetrical point
(origin adjustment).
Potentiometer R202 is used to adjust the current (slope
adjustment).

(4) Friction Test

NOTE : The indicator remains connected as for the previous
test.
(a) With the indicator not tapped, adjust RVl and RV2 to
bring the pointer, in turn, to a few cardinal points
on the dial, first with increasing values and then
with decreasing values.
(b) At each setting, the values of RVl and RV2 should not
differ from the corresponding resistance values given
in table 101 by more than the following tolerances :
2 1.2 ohm at 3 bars or 40 PSI
+ 1.8 ohm over the remainder of the range
(5) Position Test
NOTE : The indicator remains connected as for the accuracy
test,
(a) Carry out the following procedure at a few cardinal
points on the dial.
(b) Hold the indicator in any position and adjust RVl and
RV2 to bring the pointer to a scale mark. Check that
the values of RVl and RV2 do not differ from the
correponding resistance values noted when the
instrument is in its normal position by more than
0.6 ohm.

2. TROUBLE SHOOTING
A. General
When the serviceability of an indicator is suspect, it should
be subjected to the test procedure described in para. 1 of
this section until a particular test is failed. Reference
should then be made to the following paragraph and remedial
action taken as necessary. The indicator should then again be
subjected to the testing procedure until either it fails to
pass a particular test or passes successfully through the
entire sequence of tests.
This fault tracing, location, repair and re-testing cycle
should be repeated until the indicator finally passes the
test.
