Section-B
i. Energy Acquired=qΔV=(2e)(3V)=6eV
ii. If a dielectric medium of relative permittivity is inserted between the plates, the
capacitance of the capacitor will increase.
The capacitance of parallel plate capacitor in the presence of a medium can be written
as

( )
So from above equation we can say that capacitance of a capacitor in the presence of
medium is times the capacitance in vacuum.
iii. No two lines cross each other. This is because E has only one direction at any point. If
the lines cross, E could have more than one direction which is not possible because E is
a vector quantity.

Section-C
a. Consider a parallel plate capacitor which is initially uncharged. The voltage between the
plate is initially zero .i.e. Vi=0. When it is connected across the battery of voltage V, after
sometime its plates acquire +Q and –Q charges and potential difference between the plates
is V .i.e. Vf=V. The average P.D between the plates during charging process is

The energy stored between the plates of capacitor inside the electric field is
…(i)
If we put Q=CV in above equation then
…(ii)
If we put V=Q/C in equation (i) then
…(iii)
The energy is stored in the electric field between the plates of a parallel plate capacitor. So
we will represent the energy stored in a capacitor in term of electric field.
Put V=Ed and in equation (ii)

( )

( )
Where Ad is the volume between the plates. This equation shows the energy stored in the
volume Ad between plates. Let u denote the energy density that is, the energy store in a
unit volume of field. Then
b. To suspend a particle in a electric field electric force and gravitational force acting on the
particle should balance each other.
Fe=Fg
qE=W
E=mg/q
By putting given values in above equation we can find the electric field strength required to
hold a charge particle suspended in an electric field.
