QUESTION NO 1:

Write an essay on unemployment in Pakistan.

Unemployment is a major issue faced by a lot of developing countries in the world. In Pakistan, it is a serious issue too with Statista
International stating the current unemployment rate in the country to be around 4.5 percent. It is one of the most important issues
with all political parties promising to reduce unemployment but mostly failing to take practical steps and bring about the change. The
youth in the country are often left frustrated, as even at the end of their degrees they are unable to earn bread and butter for their
families. We will try to look at the factors of why unemployment is such a huge problem for Pakistan and discuss possible solutions
with each problem.

At the time of its inception, Pakistan as a result of the division received very little proportion of the industry. Since then, there have
been many efforts at industrializing the country, with partial success at most. This means that Pakistan still has a long way to go to
realize its industrial potential, with security reasons and economic instability often pushing investors away. Power outages and
corruption also forces industries to close, thus leaving young graduates and people with no avenue where their skills might be utilized.
Less industry means less employment. If Pakistan is to ameliorate its unemployment issues, it must look to boost investor confidence
and provide viable social and economic conditions for industry to flourish. More industry means more workers, which will reduce
unemployment.

Another factor contributing to unemployment is the monstrous population growth in Pakistan. Pakistan is on top of the countries with
the most proliferation of population growth. This is paradoxical for a country which lacks resources and infrastructure to support such
a large population. There is lack of family planning in Pakistan (to which there is a negative and unreligious connotation attached), lack
of women empowerment and people in Pakistan are inclined to have more sons without considering whether they can support them
or not. Such a huge young population means that the supply in labor market is abundant, which coupled with low industrialization and
low demand creates the plague of unemployment. Pakistan needs to educate its people about family planning, to reduce its
exponential rate of explosion and reduce the stress on resources as well provide people with ample opportunities.

Technological improvements have also left less space for the labor force. The same tasks that required many people such as
construction or computing, is more accurately achieved with the help of the technology while employing fewer people. This creates a
dilemma for the labor force in Pakistan, which is mostly unskilled and ignorant of the IT skills that the modern employment demands.
Even the college graduates do not meet the demands of the employers and some of that is the fault of the outdated system of
education in Pakistan. Similarly, owing to the lack of skill of the labor and some bad agreements, the foreign companies prefer to bring
their workers into the country, voiding local people of the work. The CPEC (part of One Belt One Road initiative) is a perfect example of
this, which could have brought much more benefit to the country if it was agreed that the Pakistani labor and engineers would be
employed. Pakistan needs to modify its education system to reflect the needs of the present and future markets, and shift to
vocational and skill-based learning. It also needs a think tank to come up with suggestions on the issue.

Lastly, the whole global economy has suffered at the hands of the Covid pandemic. Businesses and transport had to be shut down,
leaving the people scrambling for ways to earn money. The third world countries such as Pakistan were hit especially hard, as they
cannot afford the bailout packages or monetary help for the people, owing to a delipidated economy. Thus, the pandemic has
compounded the unemployment issue for Pakistan.
