JAPAN’S FUTURE FARMS

2050 the world will need to feed an additional two and a half billion
people living in cities yet as the demand for food increases the amount of space
available for agriculture in developed country is expected to fall. Several
countries are currently carrying out projects to overcome problems that will arise
in the future, for example, Japan is currently carrying out a new Fujitsu project.
Recent years the demand for the chips has slowed and the company has converted
an unused part of the factory for it’s foray into agriculture and this project is
called “Kirei Yasai”. Kirei yasai means clean and yasai means vegetables, so it
can be interpreted as the clean vegetable project. And there is another similar
project, namely “Mirai Vegetable Company”, Mirai is defined as the future
Kirei yasai grow vegetables in a clean room that was used for
semiconductor chips and less particles and less bacteria, and it’s soil free is that
right. So, they use a pump and nutrient solution, pumped up into the top tray and
flows under the vegetables and second and the third an return to the tank.
Vegetables factory like this could be set up anywhere in the world regardless of
the climate in the future kind of plant factory will increase, not in Japan but also
all over the world. All of the cultivation condition is controlled. An exampke in
this project is lettuce. So, throughout the year Fujitsu Project can make the same
quality lettuce as the one grown on the soil. The vegetables at Project Fujitsu stay
fresh and protected even when grown indoors. as well as checking radiation
requirements for plants twice a year.
Same as kirei yasai, mirai vegetable company, they do the same thing. In
the Mirai Company is not just un the lettuce business, it’s also selling the systems
for factory farming, and so fat they’ve had customers in Russia and Mongolia
input costs such as power and labour are high, but because the farm can operate
24 hours a day output is maximimized. From sitting to harvesting it takes 35 days
in open field, usuallay from 72 days to 90 days so 12,5 times faster. This factory
produces about 10,000 litres a day and theyre sold in supermarket across Tokyo.
and this company has sold to a restaurant just down the road from the factory, it
doesn’t get much fresher than that, and the dishes at the restaurant were very
fresh, because every component has been delivered fresh from the factory.
Based on the project described above, it can be concluded that urban
farming is very profitable because it is more environmentally friendly,
environment is easy to control, cleaner and more sterile, and suitable to be applied
in narrow or limited land because it does not require large pots or large areas of
land. In addition, it can reduce the use of excessive chemicals. if this project
continues, it can minimize food problems in the future
