OHS Policy and Standards

Occupational Health and Safety is one of the important resources in every

industry in the world. It is managed and created to improve workplace productivity,
workplace safety and to sustain the health of every worker globally. It is also the center
of the sustainable development since it focuses on health and safety for one of the most
essential people in the world. Penalties and violations are implemented to ensure the
employers compliance to every standard, rules, and policies. Moreover, there are
different standards and policies in which both employers and employees will benefit.

Republic Act no. 11058 is an act that strengthens the compliance for
occupational health and safety as well as penalties for violations. According to this act,
the state must ensure a safe and healthy workplace for workers by providing
comprehensive protection against work hazards present in the work environment, it also
states that the state shall protect every employee against work-related sickness, injury
or death by providing healthy and safe work conditions which resulted to providing
assurance to conserve manpower and prevent the loss or damages to lives.

Republic Act no. 11058 provides benefits for both employers and employees by
fulfilling duties and practices. Employees must know the safety practices in the
workplace and have the right to refuse to dangerous work, because workers are the
ones that are exposed to the hazard. They also have the right to provide accident
reports, and to use PPE or Personal Protective Equipment. Employees are also having
the right to have compensation if there a work-related incident that resulted on injury. It
also provides protection for workers since the rules and regulations were managed and
formulated by the Department of Labor and Employment which were also the ones who
will give sanctions and violations to employers that do not follow the implemented rules
and regulation.

Employers benefit from Republic Act no. 11058 because it prevents them to cost
a lot of money to provide safety to the workplace. Signages, devices, Personal
Protective Equipment, trainings, and facilities like on-site clinics, that were meant to
protect the employers from lawsuits, casualty loss in terms of profit, and it promotes the
organization as a safe and healthy workplace for workers.

There are multiple varieties of rules, standards and policies are being held and
presented by the implemented law. These were designed and implemented to provide
benefits for employees like safety and good health while working, also benefits for
employers like cheaper costs for health and protection like investing for Personal
Protective Equipment rather than paying costs for continuous work-related health issues
of the workers.

This act was approved and implemented because it was designed to improve
and promote safety and healthy workplaces for workers as well as employers. I learned
that there are some rules and regulations were designed by the DOLE and the PPE
should be tested and approved by the DOLE. I concluded that health and safety is one
of the priorities here in the Philippines when pertaining to healthy and safe workplaces.
Upon reading and skimming the sections of the act, based on what I knew most of the
organizations or employers and employees were able to comply and provide to the
standards and rules of occupational health and safety propose by the Republic Act no.
11058, but there are some employers were not complying to it whom are the ones that
only focuses on the profit not on the sustainability of the workplace.
