Abstract

Polyalthia longifolia is known to be as Mast tree and are commonly found in Brgy. Washington,

Surigao City. The tree has been the subject of quite a few research studies and has been shown to have

properties that could treat diabetes. This study determined the significant effect of Mast Tree (Polyalthia

longifolia) bark extract in reducing the blood sugar level of Albino mice (Mus musculus) as the subject

of the study.

The barks of Mast Tree (Polyalthia longifolia) were collected, boiled with 500 mL water (per

1000 grams of Mast Tree bark) for 15-20 minutes and were filtered. The 225 mL filtrate were divide

based on the following treatment: T1=100% (Cage 1), T2=75% (Cage 2), T3=50% (Cage 3), T4=control

(Cage 4) and was administered to the 9 out of 12 mice as test organisms. The mice were given 0.5 mL

every six hours within one week or seven days after breakfast, lunch and dinner respectively with the

above mentioned treatments.

Data analysis revealed that the decoction obtained from mast tree bark extract had significant

effect in reducing the blood sugar level of mice using 3 different concentrations 100%, 75% and 50%.

Reducing the total blood sugar level showed significant difference from the control set-up from

T1=22.67%, T2= 15.91%, T3=9.95%, T4= -5.83%. Results concluded that the Mast tree (Polyalthia

longifolia) bark had significant effect in lowering the total blood sugar level of albino mice. Therefore, it

can be used as an alternative and effective blood sugar reducer for individuals who had suffered

hyperglycemia ailment.
