1. Consider the following statements:
1. Water is a cyclic resource which can be used and re-used.
2. Water is the most important element require for existence of life on the
Earth.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Ans: C
Explanation:
 Water is a cyclic resource. It can be used and re-used. Water also under
goes a cycle from WATER (OCEANS) the ocean to land and land to ocean.
The hydrological cycle describes the movement of water on, in, and
above the earth.
 The water cycle has been working for billions of years and all the life on
earth depends on it. Next to air, water is the most important element
required for the existence of life on earth.
 The distribution of water on earth is quite uneven. Many locations have
plenty of water while others have very limited quantity.
 The hydrological cycle, is the circulation of water within the earth’s
hydrosphere in different forms i.e. the liquid, solid and the gaseous
phases.

3. Which among the following factors is/are affects temperature of the

Ocean?
1. Unequal distribution of Land and Water
2. Both Hemisphere
3. Prevailing Winds
Select the correct answer using the codes given below
a) 2 only
b) 1 and 3 only
c) 1 only
d) 1, 2 and 3
Ans: D
Explanation:
Factors Affecting Temperature Distribution:
i. Latitude: the temperature of surface water decreases from the equator
towards the poles because the amount of insolation decreases
poleward.
ii. Unequal distribution of land and water: the oceans in the northern
hemisphere receive more heat due to their contact with larger extent of
land than the oceans in the southern hemisphere.
iii. Prevailing win: the winds blowing from the land towards the oceans
drive warm surface water away form the coast resulting in the
upwelling of cold water from below. It results into the longitudinal
variation in the temperature. Contrary to this, the onshore winds pile
up warm water near the coast and this raises the temperature.
iv. Ocean currents: warm ocean currents raise the temperature in cold
areas while the cold currents decrease the temperature in warm ocean
areas. Gulf stream (warm current) raises the temperature near the
eastern coast of North America and the West Coast of Europe while the
Labrador current (cold current) lowers the temperature near the north-
east coast of North America.

4. Which of the following statements is/are correct?

a) Gulf Stream increases the temperature of the West Coast of North America
b) The Temperature at west coast of Europe is influenced by Gulf Stream
c) Labrador Current increases the temperature of North East America
d) Canaries Current increases the temperature of West Africa
Ans: B
Explanation:
 Ocean currents: warm ocean currents raise the temperature in cold
areas while the cold currents decrease the temperature in warm ocean
areas. Gulf stream (warm current) raises the temperature near the

Labrador current (cold current) lowers the temperature near the north-
east coast of North America.

5. Consider the following statements:

1. The Temperature depths profile of the ocean water shows the temperature
decreases with increasing depth.
2. The profile shows a boundary region between surface water of the ocean
and deepest layers.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Ans: C
Explanation:
 The temperature-depth profile for the ocean water shows how the
temperature decreases with the increasing depth. The profile shows a
boundary region between the surface waters of the ocean and the deeper
layers. The boundary usually begins around 100 - 400 m below the sea
surface and extends several hundred of m downward (Figure 13.3).
 This boundary region, from where there is a rapid decrease of
temperature, is called the thermocline. About 90 per cent of the total
volume of water is found below the thermocline in the deep ocean. In
this zone, temperatures approach 0° C.

6. Consider the following statements:

1. The First layer of the oceanic water represent warm oceanic water with
temperature ranging from 200C to 250C
2. The Second layer is characterised by rapid decrease in temperature with
increasing depth.
3. The Third layer represents thermo-cline layer which extends up to deep
ocean floor.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 and 2 only
b) 3 only
c) 2 only
d) 1 and 3 only
Ans: A
Explanation
 The temperature structure of oceans over middle and low latitudes can
be described as a three-layer system from surface to the bottom.
The first layer represents the top layer of warm oceanic water and it is
about 500m thick with temperatures ranging between 20° and 25° C.
This layer, within the tropical region, is present throughout the year but
in mid latitudes it develops only during summer.
 The second layer called the thermocline layer lies below the first layer
and is characterised by rapid decrease in temperature with increasing
depth. The thermocline is 500 -1,000 m thick. The third layer is very
cold and extends upto the deep ocean floor. In the Arctic and Antartic
circles, the surface water temperatures are close to 0° C and so the
temperature change with the depth is very slight.
 Here, only one layer of cold water exists, which extends from surface to
deep ocean floor.

7. Consider the following statements:
1. The Average Temperature of the Oceanic water is 27 degree and it
gradually increases from equator towards poles.
2. The rate of decrease of temperature with increasing latitudes in generally
0.5 degree per latitude.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Ans: B
Explanation:
 The average temperature of surface water of the oceans is about 27°C
and it gradually decreases from the equator towards the poles. The rate
of decrease of temperature with increasing latitude is generally 0.5°C per
latitude. The average temperature is around 22°C at 20° latitudes, 14° C
at 40° latitudes and 0° C near poles.
 The oceans in the northern hemisphere record relatively higher
temperature than in the southern hemisphere. The highest temperature
is not recorded at the equator but slightly towards north of it.
 The average annual temperatures for the northern and southern
hemisphere are around 19° C and 16° C respectively. This variation is
due to the unequal distribution of land and water in the northern and
southern hemispheres.

8. Which among the following process is involved in transmission of heat

from top layer of the ocean to lower section?
a) Conduction
b) Convention
c) Advection
d) Radiation
Ans: A
Explanation:
 It is a well known fact that the maximum temperature of the oceans is
always at their surfaces because they directly receive the heat from the
sun and the heat is transmitted to the lower sections of the oceans
through the process of conduction.
 It results into decrease of temperature with the increasing depth, but the
rate of decrease is not uniform throughout. The temperature falls very
rapidly up to the depth of 200 m and thereafter, the rate of decrease of
temperature is slowed down.

9. Consider the following statements:

1. All Water in nature contains dissolved mineral salt.
2. The term uses to denote total content of dissolved particle is called as
Salinity
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
a) Neither 1 nor 2

+91 8939696868 / 69 info@aramiasacademy.com www.aramiasacademy.com
Ans: C
Explanation:
 All waters in nature, whether rain water or ocean water, contain
dissolved mineral salts. Salinity is the term used to define the total
content of dissolved salts in sea water. It is calculated as the amount of
salt (in gm) dissolved in 1,000 gm (1 kg) of seawater.
 It is usually expressed as parts per thousand (o/oo) or ppt. Salinity is an
important property of sea water. Salinity of 24.7 o/oo has been
considered as the upper limit to demarcate ‘brackish water’.

10. Consider the following statements:

1. The Salinity of water in the surface layer of ocean depends mainly on
freezing and thawing of ice.
2. Surface Salinity is generally influenced in coastal region by fresh water
flow from rivers.
3. In polar region surface salinity in influenced by evaporation and
precipitation.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1, 2 and 3 only
b) 2 only
c) 1 only
d) 3 only
Ans: B
Explanation:
Factors affecting ocean salinity are mentioned below:
i. The salinity of water in the surface layer of oceans depend mainly on
evaporation and precipitation.
ii. Surface salinity is greatly influenced in coastal regions by the fresh water
flow from rivers, and in polar regions by the processes of freezing and
thawing of ice.
iii. Wind, also influences salinity of an area by transferring water to other
areas.
iv. The ocean currents contribute to the salinity variations. Salinity,
temperature and density of water are interrelated. Hence, any change in
the temperature or density influences the salinity of an area

11. In which of the following water body highest saline water can be seen?
1. Lake Van
2. Dead Sea
3. Great Salt Lake
Select the correct answer using the codes given below
a) 1 only
b) 1 and 2 only
c) 2 and 3 only
d) 1, 2 and 3
Ans: A
Explanation:
 Highest salinity in water bodies Lake Van in Turkey (330 o/oo), Dead
Sea (238 o/oo), Great Salt Lake (220 o/oo)

12. Which among the following denotes the zone with same salinity?
a) Isothermal
b) Isohaline
c) Isoclinals
d) Halocline
Ans: B
Explanation:
 Isohalines are lines (or contours) that join points of equal salinity in an
aquatic system. Isohaline position refers to the distance (kilometres) of a
near-bottom isohaline (usually 2 ppt) from the mouth of a coastal
waterway

13. Which among the following is a distinct zone where salinity generally
increases with increasing depth?
a) Isothermal
b) Isohaline
c) Isoclinals
d) Halocline
Ans: D
Explanation:
 There is a marked difference in the salinity between the surface zones
and the deep zones of the oceans. The lower salinity water rests above
the higher salinity dense water. Salinity, generally, increases with depth
and there is a distinct zone called the halocline, where salinity increases
sharply. Other factors being constant, increasing salinity of seawater
causes its density to increase. High salinity seawater, generally, sinks
below the lower salinity water. This leads to stratification by salinity.

14. Which among the following is not a minor relief feature in the ocean?
a) Sea Mount
b) Oceanic Deep
c) Atoll
d) Guyot
Ans: B
Explanation:
 The ocean floors can be divided into four major divisions:
(i) the Continental Shelf;
(ii) the Continental Slope;
(iii) the Deep Sea Plain;
(iv) the Oceanic Deeps.
 Besides, these divisions there are also major and minor relief features in
the ocean floors like ridges, hills, sea mounts, guyots, trenches, canyons,
etc.

15. Which of the following factors affect seawater density?

1. Salinity
2. Temperature
3. Rotation of the Earth.

+91 8939696868 / 69 info@aramiasacademy.com www.aramiasacademy.com
Ans: A
Explanation:
 The density of ocean water at the sea surface is about 1027 kg/m3. The
two main factors that affect density of ocean water are the temperature
of the water and the salinity of the water.
 The density of ocean water continuously increases with decreasing
temperature until the water freezes. Ocean water, with an average
salinity of 35 psu, freezes at 28.5oF (-1.940C). Increasing salinity also
increases the density of sea water.
 Temperature has a greater effect on the density of water than salinity
does. So a parcel of water with higher salinity can actual float on top of
water with lower salinity if the parcel with higher salinity is quite a bit
warmer than the lower salinity parcel.
 Whereas the circulation of surface waters of the ocean are driven by
winds, the circulation of the deep waters are driven by density
differences. Circulation in the depths of the ocean is referred to as
thermohaline circulation. The deep ocean is layered with the densest
water on bottom and the lightest water on top. Water tends to move
horizontally throughout the deep ocean, moving along lines of equal
density. Vertical circulation is thus limited because it is easier for water
to move along lines of constant density (isopycnals) than across them.

1. Mekong River is a trans-boundary river of South East Asia.
2. This river is shared by China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Ans: C
Explanation:
Mekong River
 The Mekong, or Mekong River, is a trans-boundary river in Southeast
Asia.
 It is the world's twelfth longest river and the seventh longest in Asia.
 Its estimated length is 4,350 km (2,703 mi), and it drains an area of
795,000 km2.
 From the Tibetan Plateau the river runs through China, Myanmar, Laos,
Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
 The extreme seasonal variations in flow and the presence of rapids and
waterfalls in the Mekong make navigation difficult.
 The river is a major trade route between western China and Southeast
Asia.
