Abstract:
India is a country which all the time maintained an exciting pitch and an intense
exhilaration for sports. Millions of viewers from every part of the globe come together to
experience the overwhelming performance of thousands of athletes every four years. The
Summer Olympics is conducted once in every four years for over hundred years since 1896
whereas the Winter Olympics also once in four years since 1924. Athletes have represented
India at the Summer Olympics since 1900 and at the Winter Olympics since 1964. India with
a population of over 1.3 billion people have not been able to top the podium each Olympics.
Sports in India is being treated as a factor of relaxation and not as a portrayal of professional
career. Nevertheless, India’s cricket team is considered one of the best in the world. On the
other hand, we as Indians are not able to achieve in various other sports as well. This occurs
from several factors such as poor coaching, inadequate infrastructure, bad food habits,
shortfall of exercise with physical education, unpleasant treatment of athletes representing
India. In the Summer Olympics, India has won 29 medals so far and none at the Winter
Olympics. In this study, multiple attributes for the underperformance are considered such as
GDP, population, health infrastructure, literacy rate, Gini Index and involvement in sports.
With these attributes, a model is built using Machine Learning algorithms for analysing the
performance of athletes and various effects are discussed. The dataset used for the study is
extracted from the official website of the Olympics committee.
