Know about Arjuna Award

Named after Arjuna, the greatest archer from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, the
award was set up in 1961.

Awarded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India to

recognize outstanding achievement in sports.

Being India’s highest sporting honor, it has been replaced by the Khel Ratna.

The winners of the Arjuna Award receive a statuette of Arjuna, a certificate, and a cash
prize for consistency shown in a particular sport for a span of 4 years.

Legendary Hockey player Anna Lumsden was the first woman to win the Arjuna
Award.

A Khel Ratna winner cannot be nominated for the Arjuna Award although an Arjuna
winner can be nominated for the Khel Ratna.

The government revised the criteria for the Arjuna Award over the years according to
which a player must not only have consistently excelled at the international level for the
last four years but should be recommended for excellence for that year.
  The first winner of arjun award in cricket was the former Indian all-rounder Salim
Durani who received the award in 1961. Shantha Rangaswamy became the first
female cricketer to received this honour in 1976.
