Light First.
Social innovation through lighting.

I want a light that can illuminate the smiles

of the people I meet on the street, because
that is a light that creates happiness
and that spreads around.
I want a light that, in the evening, can take back
our children and guide their steps toward home.
I want a light that warms the evenings at the park
with all kids and leaves a trail of games and
laughter.
I want a light that creates life in our city, giving
new nuances to the dark forgotten corners
of this city.
I want a light that reveals and lets us rediscover
the secrets of our history and our culture,
illuminating the monuments and buildings
that speak about our past.
I want a light that gives shape to the buildings,
the initiatives, to the dreams of our architects
and designers.
I want a light that marks a beginning
and an end of the streets of our city.

Light first. Social innovation through lighting.

Socially engaged.
Environmental protection, biological and psychological
wellbeing, sustainable economies: since 1959 we have been
committed to positive development of life and society through light.
We promote responsible use of energy with public organisations,
protagonists of architecture, industry and trade, to support cities
for a real improvement of social life. We want light to convert public
places and working environments into centres of life by integrating
it into the surrounding fabric in order to become places where smiles,
encounters, looks and handshakes can still have a meaning.

Knowledge-based wellbeing.
A new social and individual wellbeing based on vital energy, quality
of technologies and know-how. This is why we have committed
ourselves to the search for products and solutions, to the increase
of the performance of lighting systems. We have created an ideal,
yet concrete story with political, territorial and international initiatives
that is oriented towards the future, attracting and supporting the
most scientifically and ethically advanced positive thrusts of
contemporary society.

Is there life on Light?

Light generates innovation through mutually integrated technological,
industrial and design systems. Breakthrough solutions in our
organisation are created by constant dialogue with the international
protagonists of projects and ideas, by discussion with best producers
of technologies. There’s a great deal of life in light.

6 7
Light first. Social innovation through lighting.

Our Social Advertising.

Total innovation is also in the ideas and positions we
communicate. We have decided not to talk only to designers,
but to the public, to the final user of the advantages of quality light.
We have decided to take a position on the main delicate social
issues.

With iGuzzini against lighting pollution.

In 1993 a series of amazing and eccentric advertisements in terms
of product logics was published. Lighting pollution - at that time
only familiar to astronomers - became an excuse for reflection on
the quality of light and projects. The title “Who stole the Milky
Way?”, coupled with provocative images, built evocative situations
at the service of a socially useful goal.

Better Light for a Better Life.

In order to improve our living environment, we must be aware of
the real difference light can make in life quality when designed
and used correctly. In 2004 we decided to enhance the value to
team work, with Partners for better light, giving space on project
sites to architects, lighting designers, customers and iGuzzini
technicians, who were a part of the team.

Light first. Science.
The brain factory.

It is exciting to work on light with a long term perspective. We are determined to discover new ways and achieve results.
We are capable of conjugating verbs in future tense and use words that speak over time, as study and research. We
explore the borders of science to create a better light. The know-how on acrylic materials - the origin of the Guzzini
Group - and in particular on metallization technologies, has motivated the production of sophisticated optical instruments
that have been further improved with the development of molecular processes. We work on the physics of materials to
improve the thermal dissipation mechanisms, on nano-technological treatments of finishes to guarantee corrosion
resistance, on advanced electronics to increase reliability and efficiency and to control fluxes and chromatic features.
Since 1983 the development of specific software (with a programme used to calculate the lighting performance of
products) has assisted in the definition of the most efficient use of our lighting fixtures. Smart grid connections, sensors
and multilayering are the new areas of development in our scientific research.

Light first. Science.

Skills for society.

The results of our experimentation in the field of photo-biology, namely on the biological effects of exposure to
light, have become international guidelines (Which manufacturer in the industry is not talking about bio-dynamic
light today? Our research started in 1988). The studies carried out with the Lighting Research Center of
Troy were based on the relation between the variation of light features and the circadian rhythm of living beings.
In 1992 our studies gave origin to a patent and a biodynamic lighting system used to reproduce the natural
variations of daylight in artificial spaces. Not only was the system able to improve life and work quality in
enclosed spaces (such as control rooms of petrochemical plants, call centres, etc.), but it also contributed to
the rehabilitation activities of patients who had just come out of a coma.

Our investigation was urged by a demand for environmental quality, safety, saving, and reduction of lighting
pollution. In the mid-Eighties we invented polycarbonate diffusers for public lighting. The unbreakable and
transparent material, together with innovative reflectors, led to products specialized in visual comfort and
energy saving. The difficulties encountered by astronomers in the difficulties encountered by astronomers
in observing the night sky led to these solutions, thus determining our strong commitment against lighting
pollution and stray light with the production of fittings able to prevent light dispersion.

In 2009 our know-how and the collaboration with ENEL, the largest public authority in Europe for urban lighting,
allowed us to use power LEDs, once again using new optics, in one of the first fittings able to reduce
energy consumption in urban lighting.
“Light and democracy” was the investigation made at the end of the Nineties with Harvard University on a
new light for cities. The study led to the first ever prototypes of LED fittings with RGB technology, which
were programmed and controlled by software applications able to respond to environmental stress. The
Town Hall square in Boston was organized according to light fluxes that indicated the different directions and
crossings along the axes of space and time. From 2000 to 2007 we participated in Office21, an international
research project coordinated by the Frauenhofer Institut, with Microsoft among its partners, to investigate the
effect of networking on the configuration and light of work spaces. We also conducted new ways to illuminate
artworks, museums, archaeological sites, and historical buildings. We have made studies and research that
have produced new application modes (indirect light for outdoor spaces, diffused light with luminance control,
graphic light). In 2006, with “Knowing the Shape”, a project in collaboration with the Italian Institute for
Restoration and the Louvre Museum, we studied in depth the perceptive and cultural issues linked to the
relation between light and artworks. Our research activities continue unceasingly.

We have registered dozens of invention

patents, investigated the special lighting
needs of artworks, enhanced the value
of goods, and made our cities more
comfortable and safer. All studies have
been conducted in collaboration with

Light first. Industry.
It’s in the Process.
Today industry means variability, flexibility, and
complexity, without repetition. Our solution is
to collaborate with suppliers to obtain the best
components, sharing information and aligning
all activities to the latest technologies available on
the market. We work with world-leading certified

We have about 500 partners in the supply chain
and they all participate in the development stage,
because excellence of performance can be
obtained only through high-quality collaborations
that invest in the improvement of parameters
and believe in total integration: together we
process estimates, time schedules, standards and
production lots. The entire system is at the centre
of our work: we want to share the same work
ethics that is expressed in the quality of the space,
while listening to customers in every department,
respecting and involving our people with lifelong
training and updates that are indispensable in
such a rapidly- evolving technological sector.
Organisations are made up of individuals and their
trust, enthusiasm, and serenity are crucial to us.

Led is More.
Designing with LEDs means studying new geometries and
innovative relational strategies between the technological elements
of the lighting fixtures. It is complex work based on integrated
systems and exalts unique competence and deep know-how.
It is our consolidated knowledge on materials that makes us
leaders in the production and control of luminous fluxes through the
construction of innovative optical systems. The world expresses
needs that we have the obligation to understand and meet.
The answer is in projects/products that are unique in terms
of creation, service, and progress: in one word, high-intensity
solutions. So intense and compact that they can fit inside the

Graphic lighting.
Sometimes light is born from designing
shadows, from an emphasis on lines, from
contrasts and crossings, it creates a harmony
or a rhythmic counterpoint. Graphic Lighting
is for instance possible only with instruments
designed from applicative ideas that impose
design constraints for the integration of lighting
fixtures into architecture, concealing them from
our vision or minimising volumes. This great
innovation inaugurates new opportunities and new
disciplines. A blade of light may mark the rhythm
of space, inaugurating an original though on the
relation between light and built space, between
light and urban scene.

Design connection.
A combination of existing elements with ever-
changing connections to open new possibilities:
design, that of our historical experience, is not
limited to product design, but it involves our
entire activity. We are protagonists in the Italian
world of design and we have collaborated with
the best universities, with the most prestigious
names in design and in the historical and critical
preparation of formal and industrial design.
We have organized conventions, exhibitions, and
training events all over the world and received
international awards.
Light is created by designing elegant fixtures
that decorate the space and by controlling their
emission, with the purpose of obtaining visual
quality in a specific context. A lighting fixture
must be evaluated for its emission, performance,
reliability, lighting features and aesthetic
experience after installation. Light can convert
function into emotion, transforming a building
into a collective value and a landscape into a
perceptive experience. Light comes before all
else.

Vital
energy.

75
Light first. Vital energy.

Light is human.
Light is a vital thrust for man and for our body cells, it is useful, personal and variable.
From skin to heart, we are made of light. Light is one of the languages used by
cells to communicate. It is energy, the same matter of living bodies. We can bring
these two dimensions in contact and simplify their dialogue only if we start with
a wellbeing target in mind. Cells are not individual entities, but a single complex
system of different elements that exchange information on the context. The quality
of this relation is affected by senses and therefore by the luminous features of the
surrounding space: more beauty, more comfort, more accuracy, in social, work, and
commercial spaces, and also in large public places, such as airports and stations.
Every day new worlds are born and illuminated not in accordance to mere aesthetic
purposes, but to ensure a higher quality of life in the space for a personalised
operational and relational pleasure.

Light is environment.
We have converted energy efficiency and intelligence of lighting systems into the
core of our search for innovation that is not limited to products, but involves structures
and industrial processes. With an eye on energy consumption we have paid concrete
attention to the waste caused by useless dispersion of public lighting installations. Our
commitment has been translated in more rational and more efficient solutions in the
use of energy, including offices and work places. All new products are equipped with
LEDs and managed by electronic systems that control the switch-on cycles according
to actual lighting needs. Our products are designed to last and be disassembled
and disposed of easily. Sustainability is not a limit, it is a reality and a challenge, a
confrontation from which innovation and progress are originated. Our entire manufacturing
complex is ISO 14001 certified. Our buildings are a symbol of the attention and care we
pay to the natural and human environment.

76 77
Light first. Vital energy.
The project of our headquarters in Recanati
has converted each building into a case study.
Great attention has been paid to the comfort of
people and to the integration of structures into the
environment and the landscape. While designing
the Light Laboratories we have worked on
architectural solutions and performance of
technical installations to minimise the energy
footprint of the building. The laboratory building
has been granted a rating of 3.5 according to the
Sustainable Building Challenge protocol by iiSBE,
the best result for an office building in Italy.

The Spanish headquarters in Sant Cugat del Vallés

in Barcelona has managed the use of materials and
the attention to energy consumption. The glass
spherical container is made efficient by a thorough
study of the position of the entire glass surface
with respect to solar irradiation.

The building that houses our UK headquarters

achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating due to the
fact that the building includes Photovoltaic panels
located on the warehouse roof, ground source
heat pumps, and a sophisticated lighting control
system featuring daylight linking.

81
Light first. Making in Italy.

The Making.
An industry is strong when it belongs to an international district and contributes not
only to the economic, but also to the social and cultural development of its territory.
Our work must never leave out a constant attention to the history, the people, the
ideas and the features of our area. This region, the Marches, is a place of harmony,
art and culture: a place where people - citizens live happily because it is difficult not
to in such a place. The features of our territory participate in the creation of products
and services, ensuring uniqueness.
The Italian industrial tradition is recognised for its capability to intercept the
good taste and values of objects. This is the reason why our territory is rich with
stories founded on original values: family, territory, culture as diffused knowledge,
internationalization. And design: a practice that has come true with great strength
over the years, design is the only language of our society able to give a lexicon to
industry. Knowledge and innovation have built an organization that increases the value
of its products through a focus on processes, and on the contribution that a large
community produces each day. For this we talk about Making in Italy, to highlight the
togetherness of the processes, the importance of daily work, and of each individual
that is present in this company.

82 83
Light first. Making in Italy.
The i-factor.
Italy. Our story starts more than one hundred
years ago, at Fratelli Guzzini, with the production
of household items, followed by the evolution
with iGuzzini Illuminazione (1959) and Teuco
(1972) in the fields of lighting and wellness. Design,
research, technologies, products, markets, and
internationalization are developed by us starting
from the values of a solid industrial ethic. The work
in design has favoured the work in architecture. If
the Shuttle spotlights designed by Gecchelin and
awarded with Compasso d’Oro in 1989 represented
the great school of Italian design, the collaboration
with architects, designers and lighting designers has
resulted in products able to innovate applications
and create new ways to illuminate: Gae Aulenti and
Piero Castiglioni with Cestello (1990); Renzo Piano
with Nuvola (1990) and Le Perroquet (2000), followed
by Foster, Fuksas, Andreu, Willmotte, Cucinella, and
De Lucchi. In the early Sixties, as forerunners in the
Italian industrial sector, we opened our first offices
in the world to support a vehement international
development that evolved with subsidiaries in the
Nineties and with the manufacturing units in China
and North America in 2008, acting as operating and
service bases in the areas where the future is being
built.
Light involves study and innovation: this is why we
support growth also with cultural initiatives. In 1981
the Museum of Sciences and Technology of Milan
hosted the exhibition-manifest “Understanding the
light”, in which we proposed the culture of design
a new strategy that later on developed in the strict
collaboration with lighting designers leaders in this
new profession. In 1983 we developed one of the
first software applications for lighting design, since
the mid ‘80s we have organised training courses
and conferences based on innovative research with
the participation of international specialists. We
promote light as a lever to qualify civil life through
communication campaigns that give evidence
to crucial themes: in 1993 we started our fight
against lighting pollution and in 2000 the use of
bio-dynamic light. From then on, light as a tool
for social innovation has become the core of our
cultural platform. We are partners in projects all over
the world, offering knowledge and specialised
services. We work on integrated processes to offer
intelligent lighting fixtures that are able to control
their performance in a sustainable, exact way: Italian
design, reliable construction, advanced electronics,
systems with great added value.
