A.

The characters in the movie are Del Spooner, , Dr. Susan Calvin, Sonny, Lawrence

Robertson, Gigi, John Bergin, and V.I.K.I. Del Spooner, the main character, is a

detective/police officer who has a past involving the robot. He developed a prejudice

regarding robots because of this. He is also a cyborg; mostly human but a part of him

(left arm) is mechanical or robot. Dr. Alfred Lanning is the one who invented the

robots and their 3 laws in the movie. He is also the one who saved Spooner from

dying. Dr. Susan Calvin is a psychologist who specializes on the behavior of robots.

Sonny is the robot which is different from all the other robots because he is more

like a human. He has emotions and also dreams when asleep. Lawrence Robertson is

the owner or CEO of the company USR. Gigi is Del’s grandmother. John Bergin is

Del’s friend and also the chief of the police station. V.I.K.I (Virtual Interactive Kinetic

Intelligence) is the building’s (USR) A.I. computer.

B.

The movie is set in the year 2035, in Chicago, where the robots co-exist with human

in our planet. Robots can be seen all throughout the movie serving in restaurants,

cooking in homes, or accompanying a human.

C. The movie is about a detective who investigates a crime scene of someone who’s

close to him in a company that manufactures robots. He, then, meets the CEO of the

company and was tasked to investigate around the premises with Dr. Calvin. He

suspects that a robot (Sonny) killed the doctor because of his prejudice against the

robots. Dr. Calvin then explained that it was impossible because the robots had 3

laws that are hardwired to them. Spooner’s investigation led him to clues or crumbs

as termed in the movie about what actually happened and what will happen. He
realizes that some of the robots are glowing red which indicates that they are about

to do something bad. The main characters realize that the laws have been violated

by V.I.KI.

D.

The movie shows how dangerous advanced technology can be. For example, in the

movie, even if there are rules to protect humans, the artificial intelligence computer

still ended up hurting humans. This shows that no matter how advanced and grand

the technology is, a fatal flaw will still occur. No matter how helpful the robots are in

the movie and how some of them had emotions, human beings are still better

because they are capable of emotions and reasoning beyond logic that robots cannot

have. In this movie, I have learned that technology is wise and that it saves time and

energy but it also has a lot of disadvantages. For example, in the modern times,

gadgets are prevalent, and yes, they are helpful but it also harms our health because

of the radiation. Also, in the movie, the robots had a law in which they cannot injure

or harm humans but there are so many instances in the movie where an NS-5 robot

has harmed a human. Which clearly shows that even if robots or technology in

general, is deemed to be perfect, something can always go wrong if there if slight

variation or event happened according to the chaos theory.
