Assignment 01

General Guidelines

M.H.Susira Kavinda Mendis Unit 13: Computing Research Project Page | 5

1. A Cover page or title page – You should always attach a title page to your assignment. Use previous
page as your cover sheet and be sure to fill the details correctly.
2. This entire brief should be attached in first before you start answering.
3. All the assignments should prepare using word processing software.
4. All the assignments should print in A4 sized paper, and make sure to only use one side printing.
5. Allow 1” margin on each side of the paper. But on the left side you will need to leave room for binging.

Word Processing Rules

1. Use a font type that will make easy for your examiner to read. The font size should be 12 point, and
should be in the style of Time New Roman.
2. Use 1.5 line word-processing. Left justify all paragraphs.
3. Ensure that all headings are consistent in terms of size and font style.
4. Use footer function on the word processor to insert Your Name, Subject, Assignment No, and Page
Number on each page. This is useful if individual sheets become detached for any reason.
5. Use word processing application spell check and grammar check function to help edit your assignment.

Important Points:

1. Check carefully the hand in date and the instructions given with the assignment. Late submissions will
not be accepted.
2. Ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the assignment by the due date.
3. Don’t leave things such as printing to the last minute – excuses of this nature will not be accepted for
failure to hand in the work on time.
4. You must take responsibility for managing your own time effectively.
5. If you are unable to hand in your assignment on time and have valid reasons such as illness, you may
apply (in writing) for an extension.
6. Failure to achieve at least a PASS grade will result in a REFERRAL grade being given.
7. Non-submission of work without valid reasons will lead to an automatic REFERRAL. You will then be
asked to complete an alternative assignment.
8. Take great care that if you use other people’s work or ideas in your assignment, you properly
reference them, using the HARVARD referencing system, in you text and any bibliography, otherwise
you may be guilty of plagiarism.
9. If you are caught plagiarising you could have your grade reduced to A REFERRAL or at worst you could
be excluded from the course.

Chapter 01

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine and learn. The computer has to learn
how to respond to certain actions, so it uses algorithms and historical data to create something called a propensity
model. Cortana is a virtual assistant created by Microsoft for cortana will use the Bing search engine and data
stored on the user’s smartphone by to make personalized recommendations.

1.2 Background of the research

Main Objective of this project to identify uses of windows Cortana for paralyzed people to work with computer
devices. Because it gives us the opportunity to identify what the paralyzed people need & how to help them to
doing their day to day work. With an AI based system, we can find solutions for defects occur in those patterns
and help them for better and effective usage. That is why, I have selected this topic for the project.

1.3 Motivation

When we tell something using our voice, “Cortana” realized and it react properly. For an example when “we say
what is Cortana?” then it react at the same time. So if paralyzed people need to find something they can’t type it

M.H.Susira Kavinda Mendis Unit 13: Computing Research Project Page | 16

using computer or google but they can ask something using their voice and they can play songs, they can do lot
of things to do their day today work. So this method is very useful for them.

1.4 Problems in brief

The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence,
such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. Presumably
the ‘A’ part of ‘AI’ isn’t the challenge: We seem to have a fairly good handle on what it means to say that
something is an artifact, or artificial. Cortana is a virtual assistant created by Microsoft . Voice assistants are
software agents that can interpret human speech and respond via synthesized voices. Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s
Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Google’s Assistant are the most popular voice assistants and are embedded in
smartphones or dedicated home speakers. Users can ask their assistants questions, control home automation
devices and media playback via voice, and manage other basic tasks such as email, to-do lists, and calendars with
verbal commands. To help both designers and people with tetraplegia fully realize the benefits of voice assistant
technology, we conducted interviews with five people with tetraplegia in the home to understand how this
population currently uses voice-based interfaces as well as other technologies in their everyday tasks. We found
that people with tetraplegia use voice assistants in specific places, such as in their beds, or when traveling in their
wheelchair. In addition, we note the inefficiencies for people with tetraplegia when using voice assistance.

1.5 Aim and Objectives

Objectives:
1.Main Objective
 To identify uses of windows Cortana for paralyzed people to work with computer devices
2.Specific Objective
 To find the all AI mechanism which is provide by the Cortana to users
 To find the how Cortana think and speaks and give relevant information understanding human voice.
 To find the how provide essential guide for the paralyzed people.

Hypothesis of research project

Hypothesis 1:
H1: Cortana provide AI mechanisms to the users
H2: Cortana does not provide AI mechanisms to the users
Hypothesis of research project
Hypothesis 2:
H1: Cortana thinks and speaks and gives relevant information understanding human voice
H2: Cortana thinks and speaks and gives irrelevant information understanding human voice
Hypothesis of research project
Hypothesis 3:
H1: Cortana provides essential guidance for paralyzed people
H2: Cortana does not provide essential guidance for paralyzed people

M.H.Susira Kavinda Mendis Unit 13: Computing Research Project Page | 17

1.6 Proposed solution
Through accomplishing this research To identify uses of windows Cortana for paralyzed people to work with
computer devices this is my main Objective in my research and Specific Objective are
To find the all AI mechanism which is provide by the Cortana to users, To find the how Cortana think and
speaks and give relevant information understanding human voice, To find the how provide essential guide for the
paralyzed people. This research will be conducted under ideas and opinions which will be collected from the
members of the HND Batch 009 and 010 of ESoft Metro College, Kalutara. To conclude the search from the
gathered data and information the above community is used. The community who participate on this research
survey is 20 where the community is consisted of HND 009 and 010 student of Esoft Metro College. Data
Collection Method is Primary data Questionnaires is distributed among the selected group and doing the
research.

1.7 Conclusion
By doing this research I can identify how help windows Cortana for paralyzed people to work with computer
devices. What are the available AI features in Cortana . Also, this research will help them identify new strategies
and opportunities in working with Cortana.

objectives and the proposed solution. The chapter two, would be focusing on the literature review on similar
researches based on related areas to the research topic,

1. Artificial Intelligence
2. Virtual Assistant
3. Cortana
4. Paralyzed People

2.2 Available AI based mechanisms in (mention your area)

1. Artificial Intelligence

(We can ignore here conundrums arising from self-reproducing systems,
systems that evolve without human oversight, etc.)[ CITATION SBr13 \l 1033 ]

2. Virtual Assistant

Virtual Assistant is the program of an app or a software which helps for the human activities. The specific duties
of a virtual assistant vary according to the needs of the human. virtual assistant application running on a
computer capable of receiving human voice communications from a user of a remote user interface and
transmitting a vocalization to the remote user interface, the virtual assistant application enabling the user to access
email and voicemail messages of the user[ CITATION Ulm \l 1033 ]
