Unit Learning Outcomes:

LO1. Examine appropriate research methodologies and approaches as part of the

research process.

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence
demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans
and other animals. Computer science defines AI research as the study of "intelligent
agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its
chance of successfully achieving its goals.
Artificial Intelligence covers computer systems which are able to perform tasks
normally requiring human intelligence. These tasks might include visual perception,
speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages and many
more.
AI impacts on every aspect of society and has the potential to be fully integrated into
daily work and social lives in the very near future.

Learner requires to select a suitable area from the areas given below to conduct a
research and further, needs to develop appropriate Topic, Research Questions
and Research Objectives.
• How does AI aid the in-depth exploration of an environment or system?
• What role may AI play in generating content for big brand products and
services?
• How does AI and machine learning contribute to the innovative use of
technology e.g. robotics, automotive transportation?
• What impact will the future influences of AI have in our daily lives?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………….

The Learner requires to produce a research proposal that clearly defines a research
question or hypothesis, supported by a literature review (Use the project proposal and
ethical consideration form template formats)

Project Proposal should cover following areas;

1. Definition of research problem or question. (This can be stated as a research

question, objectives or hypothesis)
2. Provide a literature review giving the background and conceptualization of
the proposed area of study. (This would provide existing knowledge and
benchmarks by which the data can be judged)
3. Consider and define research methodology and research process.
Demonstrate understanding of the pitfalls and limitations of the
methods chosen and ethical issues that might arise.
4. Draw points (1–3, above) together into a research proposal by getting agreement with
your tutor.

1.2 Introduction

Along with the availability of different types of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, AI
has gained attention in bioinformatics. Most of the researchers currently apply the ready-
made systems to organize and mine their databases. In the current bioinformatics field,
there are many intelligent methods. Thus, the researchers face difficulty when selecting
most suitable methods. So, researchers require intelligence tools, which provides data in
a comprehensible manner, explained with context, estimates of accuracy and
clarifications. The major objective of this article is to review the use of AI tools in the
field of bioinformatics. Bioinformatics have risen from the requirements of biologists to
apply and support interpretation of the massive amounts of data that are continuously
being collected in genomic research. The fundamental inspiration for many of the
bioinformatics is the evolution of organisms and the difficulty of working with inaccurate
data.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is the recreation of human intelligence in machines to mimic human
actions and think like a human. Any machine that has the characteristics related to human
intelligence can be known as a machine with artificial intelligence.
Learning, reasoning, and perception are the goals of artificial intelligence. Thus, there are
countless amount applications of artificial intelligence. The technology is currently used
in many different fields and industries such as health care, medicine, etc.

What is bioinformatics?
Bioinformatics is a subdiscipline of biology and computer science concerned with the
acquisition, storage, analysis, and dissemination of biological data, most often DNA and
amino acid sequences. Bioinformatics uses computer programs for a variety of
applications, including determining gene and protein functions, establishing evolutionary
relationships, and predicting the three-dimensional shapes of proteins.

Advantages of using of artificial intelligence bioinformatic tools.

The main bioinformatic tools are the internet and computer applications. There are various
programs and databases to analyse DNA and proteins. Thus, anyone who has the access
to the internet or the relevant websites can use bioinformatic tools. But, it does not make
handling and analysing raw genomic data easier and efficient.
AI technology supports generation of information in bioinformatics much quicker.
Moreover, these tools can make accurate predictions.

Genome Sequencing

The use of AI algorithms enhances the speed of finding the host gene, which further
enhances the sequencing process that can help get an accurate gene structure to provide
personalized and life-saving therapies to patients. For instance, ML algorithms can find
patterns from historical DNA datasets and then predict the odds of an individual
developing a disease according to his or her genome sequencing. All these medications
done with the help of genome sequencing commences by analyzing gene expressions.

Gene Expression Analysis

DNA microarray is a chip that has a collection of DNA spots attached to it. Researchers
use microarrays to collect and measure gene expressions in organisms. Gene expression
is converting the information extracted from a gene and using it to create a functional
gene product like protein. Machine learning can analyze, identify, and classify patterns in
gene expressions. Microarrays and machine learning techniques, when combined, can
help detect tumor cells at a molecular level. This will enable doctors to provide
personalized cancer treatments to patients based on the genetic build-up of a tumor.

Protein Classification

with recent advancements in microscopy throughputs, cellular images are created at high
space, and classification of proteins manually has become challenging. Computer vision
can gain understanding from these cellular images that can be used by ML algorithms to
classify proteins.

Protein Structure Generative Modeling

Generative models can generate new data instances that can be used to train AI algorithms
for various fields of bioinformatics. These models aim to learn data representation and
creates new data instances that look like the original one. One of the efficient approaches
to create generative models is Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that are types of
neural networks and uses a generator and a discriminator network for generating protein
structures. The generator network tries to generate a natural image, whereas the
discriminator tries to determine whether the image generated by the former network is
fake or real. And then, the images that are determined as real can be used to train AI
algorithms.
