Practice Routine 3

‐ Requirements for starting Practice Routine 3 ‐

You have completed Practice Routines 1 and 2 which include:

 You have watched ALL of the video lessons from the Fundamentals Section.

 You have practiced Rib Cage Exercise 1 for a minimum of one week as well as the
Warm‐Up exercises.

 You have watched all the video lessons in Fundamentals/ “The Secret to Natural Breath
Control.”

 You have practiced Rib Cage Exercise 2 and Rib Cage Exercise 3 together for a
minimum of 1 week or a maximum of 2‐3 weeks.

Preferably, after your first week of practicing them (and checking yourself against my
video lessons as well as some of the other VEs), you sent me a Video Exchange (VE) of
yourself doing two or three repetitions of Rib Cage Exercise 2 and one mini‐set (5
repetitions) of Rib Cage Exercise 3. (By using the VE feature of my school, I am able to
confirm with you that you are doing them correctly or coach you on the points you
need help with.)

NOTE: If you are doing these exercises incorrectly, this technique will make singing
harder rather than giving you the amazing freedom, flexibility and control that the rib
cage expansion technique can and will give you. Let’s make sure you are doing it right!

With the above completed, you are ready for your next exercise routine.

Congratulations!

See the next pages for your instructions.

What about the Vocal Warm‐Up Routine?

At this point, I am not assigning you the vocal warm‐up routine that you have been practicing.
However, you can use them whenever you wish, at whatever time you desire. Definitely use
them pre‐performance and pre‐rehearsal as well as the “N” and “NG” slides as part of your
cool‐down.

How long do I practice Routine 3?

Practice Routine 3 should be practiced for a minimum of one to two weeks before changing to
Routine 4.

How do I know when to move forward to the next Practice Routine?

When you can keep you jaw open and still about a 1 & ½ fingers distance (without the use of
your hand on your jaw) as well as maintain your rib cage expansion throughout the above
Vocal Ease and Flexibility exercises numbers 2, 4 and 5 (though it still may need your
attention and take some effort), that will be the time you can move on to the next series of
vocal exercises found in the section: Freeing Your Voice / Vocal Toning. At that time you will
continue practicing both Rib Cage Exercises and simply change your vocal exercise routine.

As you move forward in the lessons, I provide you with video instructions telling you when to
go on to each of the next vocal exercise routines. I also give you video lesson instructions
regarding how long you need to continue practicing the rib cage exercises (review:
Fundamentals / The Secret to Natural Breath Control, Lesson: How to Develop and Use This
Technique). Later in the curriculum, I direct you on when you can discontinue the rib cage
exercises (Section: Building Your Voice / Phasing Out the Rib Cage Exercises).

Remember: The goal is to be able to easily use and apply the rib cage expansion technique.
Once you’ve got it, there’s one very short final exercise to “seal the deal” and then you’ll have it
to use for the rest of your life!

Cheering you on!
