All questions carry equal marks
---

1.a) Discuss about types of clay minerals and its structure.

b) Derive the relation between dry density and wet density. [7+8]
pa
2.a) Explain about hydrometer analysis with a neat sketch.
b) Determine the density index of the sand if the dry unit weight of sand in the loosest
pe
state is 12kN/m3 and in the densest state, it is 20kN/m3. Take n=35% and G=2.65.[7+8]

3.a) Discuss about flow of water through soils.

r1
b) A soil sample in a falling head permeameter is 10cm in diameter and 15cm high. The
coefficient of permeability of the soil sample is 1 × 10–4 cm/s. If the head in the stand
pipe falls from 40cm to 15cm in 5minutes then determine the size of the standpipe.
[7+8]

4.a) Explain characteristics and uses of flownets.
b) Calculate total and effective stress at a depth of 4m and 8m below the ground surface.
12
Water table is at a depth of 4m below the ground. Moisture content above the water
table is 10%. Take G=2.67, e= 0.65. [7+8]

5.a) Discuss about variation of vertical stress under point load along the vertical and
horizontal plane.
b) Determine vertical stress at a radial distance of 3m and at a depth of 6m when a
01
concentrated load of 120kN acts on the surface of a soil. Use Boussinesq’s theory and
Westergaard’s theory and comment on the result. [7+8]
8P
6.a) Explain about mechanism of compaction and the importance of MDD and OMC.
b) Discuss about compaction quality control in soils. [7+8]

7.a) Discuss about stress history of clay in terms of void ratio and effective stress.
M
b) The void ratio of a clay soil is 1.64 and its compression index is 0.25 at the pressure
120kN/m2. Determine the void ratio if the pressure is increased to 190kN/m2. [7+8]

8.a) Explain merits and demerits of laboratory direct shear test to determine the shear
strength of soil.
b) Discuss about unconsolidated undrained and consolidated undrained test. [7+8]
