CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE :
 Surat is known for its food. There is a famous saying in
Gujarati language "સરુ તન ુું જમણ અને કાશીન ુું મરણ", meaning
Eat in Surat and Die in Kashi for the ultimate experience of
the soul. Gujarati Idada ( White Dhokla)

 Navratri {celebrated in the honor of the divine feminine Devi


(Durga)}is the most common festival celebrated in Surat. Navratri

 Chandi Padvo (last full moon day in Hindu calander) is one


of the festival celebrated "only" by the people of Surat.

 Other festivals of Surat are Makar Sankranti {celebrated for "Chandi" sweets
the deity SURYA ( Sun)} is one of the few ancient Indian
festivals that has been observed according to solar cycles
(also known as kite festival).

 Vernacular typology of housing.

 There is ‘plasticity in the residential architecture


of Surat’. There is a hybrid and eclectic form of
built spaces.

 the home and work relationship is very


evident, where the otla (extended plinth and
entrance to the house) not only became an
integral part of the house, but also an important
street element. It defines the transition space
for the house from the street.

 Most houses exemplify a neoclassical style of


architecture and baroque style, with Indian
figurative and Arabic geometrical motifs.
DESIGN
INTERVENTI ONS :

 OTLA : type of entrance area is called an otla or otta, and it consists of


a narrow raised plinth with steps. The otla acts as a sort of
communication zone between outsiders and the residents of the
house. Typically in an otla, there is a row of columns supporting a
wooden facade.

 In some houses false ceiling has intricate detailing, there is carvings on


exterior walls and exposed wood, presence of jharokha (small
protruding arched balcony with screens).
MATERIALS:

 Wood – carved wood was seen in


brackets, motifs, windows and doors in
traditional Gujarati woodcarved houses.
 Houses were decorated with lime
stucco, wooden architrave and stone
carving.
 Most houses were made of concrete and
bricks.
 Tinted glass is used as partition between
spaces and in windows.
