heterosexual is the culture’s norm, homosexuals are often marginalized and discriminated. As
many people believe is not normal, they see it as problem and believe that homosexuality is not
the moral standard. With the passing years, homosexuality is being more and more accepted
around the world. In United States for example, there are now laws banning discrimination based
on sexual orientation. Also, the military now it acceptant of homosexuality when there used to be
a ban. However, many other forms of discrimination still occur in religious settings and on every
day basis in society like colleges. Additionally, same sex marriage is a very debated topic and
even though in the 50 states is legal, in the majority of countries is illegal. Discrimination and
prejudice against homosexuality can lead to violence. The FBI reports a number of 1,200 hate
crimes against gays and lesbian each year but this number in reality is much higher because
homosexual people are often afraid to speak up. Furthermore, in 2011 a research concluded that
in the population, 2.8 percent of mean and 1.4 percent of women are homosexual or bisexual.
This percentage amounts to about 6 million people. But a question that many people ask and do
not know the answer to is: what actually determines sexual orientation?
While numerous things have enhanced for gay and lesbian individuals in the course of
recent years in Australia, there is as yet consistent vulnerability about whether they will get
acceptance from families, friends, colleagues and services. The constant weight of managing this
Gay men and lesbians have higher rates of emotional well-being issue than any other
people . They additionally have higher rates of stoutness, smoking and dangerous liquor and
nearly one in seven reported living in fear of homophobic violence. This fear was justified in that
nearly 85 per cent of respondents had been subjected to some form of homophobic violence or
harassment in their lifetimes and one in two had experienced homophobic harassment or other
Sexual orientation is not easy to define since it the result from a variety of factors. This
factors include hormones, genetics, brain structure, life experiences and culture. However, the
most important factors are culture and biology. As mentioned before, sexual behaviors and
attitude vary from culture to culture. In some cultures, men dressed as women is very normal and
in some cultures is considered bad. Meaning that many people living such diverse cultures, grow
up with different views and expectations in society and consequently in sexual expression,
behaviors and orientation. Even though society plays a part in how society thinks about sexually,
evidence shows that sexual orientations is highly linked with biology, it is fixed at birth. Studies
found evidence supporting the fact that small differences in the brain- such as difference in the
hypothalamus of homosexuals- and hormone levels play a significant part in sexual orientations.
The importance of this is that “if sexual orientation is biological, it is as much beyond our control
as the color of our skin” so people cannot control it and “gay people are no more responsible for
their sexual orientation than African American people are for their skin color” and they both
There are many aspects in sexuality that can be social problems. An example is
pornography. Many women argue that pornography fuels sexual violence against women &
children but pornography is only illegal when there are obscenities such as lack of social values
and decency and also sexual content involving children under age eighteen. Another problem
that affects both men and women is sexual harassment. That are unwanted sexual advances,
comments or contact. Female harassment is certainly the most common, in fact 84% of known
harassers are men who harass women. And it is often used by a way of control used by men to
enforce sexual stratification. Another controversial topic regarding sexuality is prostitution and
even though is illegal in most states, is a very common practice. As well as teenage pregnancy.
In USA about 750,000 teenagers become pregnant each year. Many people believe that sexual
education can help reduce this number. Most teenagers that get pregnant come from low income
or poor families in which ignorance is very common. By giving girls and boys sexual education
they get educated about it and can take decisions based on facts in order to avoid pregnancy and
Same sex marriage is banned from many countries and it is a social problem since its pros
and cons don’t let the people decide if it is okay or not. Some pros of same sex marriage are:
Children are no more likely to grow up to be gay than children raised in homes of straight
parents, and Equal opportunities and rights are what matter. In the other hand the cons of same
sex marriage can cause some disturbance for society, for example: children may be more likely
to be gay themselves, definition of family will be altered, conflict and feminist theories will be
the same that is heterosexual sex is one way men can dominate women and maintain their
principle position in society and suggest that sexual oppression has led to social oppression
Sexually transmitted diseases are spread by sexual contact. STDs occurrence raised with
the sexual revolution and around the world millions of people contract them each year. The most
common diseases include genital herpes; it affects at least 16% of the population in United
States. This disease has no cure but it does not pose much danger to human health. An STD that
seriously affect people is AIDS, it is very fatal. This disease destroys the body’s immune system
which leaves a person very weak and able to contract other diseases that can cause death. Other
diseases include gonorrhea and syphilis. STDs have existed through history and has been a social
problem throughout the years. Education as well can help reduce rates of STDs.
