ENGINEERING WORK EXECUTION
ENGINEERING INSPECTION
An important function that shop inspection (stationary and rotary equipment), site inspection and pre -
shipment inspection can be carried out satisfactorily only by trusted and experienced Inspectors whose
integrity and competence are beyond doubt. The reliability and overall normal performance of inspection
jobs are products of careful selection of the Inspection Company possessing an excellent and untarnished
reputation and likewise, the effective intervention of a cohesive team of inspectors.

THIRD PARTY INSPECTION

A function that requires a good neutral outside party possessing a high level of technical competence in
various engineering discipline such as; Civil Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumental, inspection and
test plan for fabrication of structural steel components etc., performing inspection works and monitoring of
the various activities on all stages of construction/installation in order to ensure strict compliance with
approved construction drawings and project specifications.
TPI Inspector will monitor the Contractor's inspection techniques and test procedures to ensure
compliance with the contract documents (project engineering design and drawings, applicable procedures,
specifications and codes). Perform inspection on materials, layout and cutting, fit-up, visual examination after
welding, dimensional check of the components, witness all Inspection and Testing based on approved
Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) and assure that the quality of work conform to drawings and client
specifications.

SHUTDOWN INSPECTION
Is conducted periodically enabling industrial plants, factories and refineries etc., to determine the
existing plant conditions in order to carry out the necessary preventive and corrective maintenance works on
various rotating and stationary equipment, buildings, piping’s, etc., through the performance of effective
visual inspection, accurate measurement of vessels and processes pipelines wall thickness, corrosion/erosion
surveys of vessels and lines, blockage and silting detection and functional checks of moving components.

BUSINESS QUALIFICATION
A process by which job applicants undergo comprehensive and rigid theoretical and practical
examinations to determine the level of skills, suitability, limitations and to improve techniques that would
ensure high level of actual job performance. The qualification test aims to stimulate the actual job conditions
giving emphasis to the type of equipment operation, properties and dimensions of materials and the required
process.

NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION
INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY
Radiography basically is the study of shadow picture; it reveals the internal structure of an object when
exposed to illumination of radiation. It is one of the most reliable Non-Destructive testing methods applied
to detect faults in welding, casting, and in the verification of internal corrosion on piping, wall of vessel and
also used to trace faults in valve internals when “passing” is a problem.
Radiographs are permanent positive record and the object examined remains intact. Tested parts can
be returned to service if findings do not require rectifications, immediate repair can be done without
missing any part of “for repair” areas because radiographs [processed industrial film] reveal the exact
location of faults.

ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT)

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses high frequency sound energy to conduct examinations and make
measurements. Ultrasonic inspection can be used for flaw detection/evaluation, dimensional measurements,
material characterization, and more.

This method in NDT is very effective in tracing and analyzing metal losses in vessel, tank, pipe and other
heavy walls suspected of being internally corroded or have thinning areas or defective weld which our naked
eyes cannot visualize. These areas might be very critical and might require immediate replacement or repairs
to ensure integrity of equipment material and the equipment itself.

15 | P a g e
QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM /
SECTION 6
ENGINEERING WORK EXECUTION
LOW FREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC TECHNIQUE (LFET)
The “Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique” (LFET) is an effective means to inspect tubing and piping
from the outside diameter (O.D.), as well as pressure vessels. It detects and quantifies I.D. and O.D. defects
in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. This technique is a dry non-contact method. The scanners contain no
magnets. It is forgiving to uniform surface scale. The technology is adaptable to different applications, which
allows the inspection of different diameters of tubing, the inspection of bends, and the inspection of tubes
in space- constricted areas. The system collects 1200 samples per second. It is lightweight, modular, and uses
digital signal processing electronics while being operated with a laptop computer. The results are displayed
in real-time with high-resolution color graphics with 3D display. Inspections are able to find pitting, general
wall losses, caustic and phosphate gouging, corrosion cells, hydrogen damage, Microbiologically Influenced
Corrosion attack (MIC attack), Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC), cracking, erosion, and manufacturing
defects. The technology is able to test through non-magnetic coatings up to ¼” thick. By adjusting the
frequency level, magnetic and non-magnetic metals can be inspected. A general rule is the lower the test
frequency, the greater the depth for signal penetration.

PHASED ARRAY ULTRASONIC TESTING (PAUT)

The benefits of phased array technology over conventional UT come from its ability to use multiple elements
to steer, focus and scan beams with a single transducer assembly. Beam steering, commonly referred to
sectorial scanning, can be used for mapping components at appropriate angles. This can greatly simplify the
inspection of components with complex geometry. The small footprint of the transducer and the ability to
sweep the beam without moving the probe also aids inspection of such components in situations where there is
limited access for mechanical scanning. Sectorial scanning is also typically used for weld inspection. The ability
to test welds with multiple angles from a single probe greatly increases the probability of detection of
anomalies. Electronic focusing permits optimizing the beam shape and size at the expected defect location,
as well as further optimizing probability of detection. The ability to focus at multiple depths also improves
the ability for sizing critical defects for volumetric inspections.

MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION (MPI)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) is the most selected method to trace cracks and other surface and sub-
surface defects on component design, structures, Heat affected zones [HAZ] of welded parts of pressure
vessels, pressure piping and all appurtenances attached to pressurized equipment such as boilers, heat
exchangers, pressurized containers, penstock high pressure portion and others.

DYE PENETRANT TESTING (DPT)

To ensure defect free welding on critical jobs, DPT is applied for every pass of weld deposited. This is to
weed out defects and other discontinuities for removal by grinding. Defects are revealed and identified by
DPT, bleeding occurs on defective portion and comes out on the surface for removal. The Heat Affected
Zones [HAZ] where cracking might be present on heavy walls from 19.0mm and above thickness in pipi ng
can also be revealed by DPT.
OUT OF SERVICE INSPECTION (OOSI)

MAGNETIC FLUX TEAKAGE TEST (MFLT)
Used to evaluate the underside condition of plate on storage tank floors. The FloormapVS2i Silverwing
(UK) Ltd's, is latest version of the best-selling MFL floor scanner and now comes with up- graded magnets
to improve defect detectability and sizing on thicker materials, faster data capture with a custom designed
micro controller and all new software. The VS2i contains significant improvements in terms of defect
positioning, electronic data processing and software manipulation.

HOLIDAY TESTING
High voltage Holiday Detectors are, in principle, insulation testers used to indicate a fault in the non-
conductive coating under test by generating a spark which triggers audible and visual alarm.
Flaws such as pinholes, air bubbles, inclusions, cracks, voids and thin spots can occur in a wide range
of coating material used in industry. A pinhole although small can cause extreme damage by permitting
corrosive materials to reach the base material, Lack of continuity of coating causes premature failure,
which can be very expensive to repair and lead to possible stoppage in production. In certain
circumstances, an air pocket can represent a substantial portion of the total thickness, and thus cause a
weak point, even though the coating is continuous.

VACUUM TESTING
Vacuum testing requires proper surface preparation. The need to clean the surface to be inspected
free from scales that are capable of plugging small holes is of utmost importance. Otherwise, testing will
not yield good results.
In the performance of the test, the surface is first coated with films of soapy solution. Then the open
side of the vacuum box is placed on top of the test area. A partial vacuum of 21 kPa (3 lbf/in. 2/6 in. Hg) to
35kPa (5 lbf/in. 2/10 in Hg) is maintained inside the box. Leaks can simply be located by the appearance of
continuous bubbles at any point on the test area. Observation is made at the top glass of the box.
The effectivity of this method is enough to locate even hairline cracks. Care should be exercised that
heavy soapy solution is not applied. It usually gives false indication. The main disadvantage of this method
is its difficulty to apply on non-flat surfaces. More so, in large tanks, it is considered to be time-consuming
and labor intensive.

CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM

Cathodic Protection is a widely accepted method of corrosion control. A technique of preventing corrosion
by making the entire surface of the metal to be protected act as if it were the cathode of an electrochemical
cell.
It operates by passing direct current continuously from electrodes which are installed in the electrolyte, to
the structure to be protected and cause all metal surface to be cathodic, and the potential of the relative
to the electrolyte is polarized to more negative than circuit potential of the anodic areas. The change in
potential is at least –0.85 volts with respect to copper/copper sulfate half-cell reference electrode or –0.80
volts with respect to silver/silver chloride reference electrode. Corrosion is arrested when the current is of
sufficient magnitude and is properly distributed and corrosion will be eliminated. It is simply transferred
from the metal surface to an external anode.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM /
SECTION 6
ENGINEERING WORK EXECUTION
POSITIVE METAL IDENTIFICATION (PMI)
Nowadays as the features of specific materials increasingly become better utilized and fitness for purpose
is designed, guarantee of material specifications is very important. With Positive Metal Identification (PMI)
the alloy composition and thus, the identity of materials can be determined. When the material certificate
is missing or unclear and the costumer wants certainty about the composition of a material, PMI is the
solution.

Positive Metal Identification is particularly used for high-quality metals like stainless steel and high alloy
metals. While engineers push the boundaries of metal capacities to their limits in the design, assurance that
the proper material is used becomes more important.

Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET) – Boiler
Tubes and Piping
LFET data displayed in 5 different windows; 1) raw collected data 2) zoomed in data 3) C-Scan 4) B-Scan
5) 3D color coded picture. Inspection is done by a scanner moving along the test piece at a constant speed
of approximately 4” per second while watching the computer as the data is acquired. Any suspicious
signals are rescanned. If the signal repeats, the location is marked for further investigation. The Low
Frequency Electromagnetic Technique signal is analyzed and the flaw is sized using calibration standards.
When applicable, 3-Dimensional Scan Phasor XS Single Probe Ultrasonic Thickness Measurements (UTM)
are taken on the identified flaws for confirmation and in some cases, used for secondary quantification.
LFET has been used to inspect numerous pieces of equipment for several industries. A common use for
LFET inspections is boiler tubing. In the maintenance section, LFET inspects approximately 50 furnace
waterwalls annually and economizers, reheaters, and superheaters (measure the amount of magnetite
deposits in stainless steel superheater). For boiler inspections, LFET is typically used for thickness
measurements, detection of corrosion cells/hydrogen damage, and cracking. LFE T inspection is
applicable in above ground storage tanks, pipelines, heat exchangers, boiler tubes and among other
equipment.

analysing metal losses/cracks in vessels, tank, pipe, and other heavy walls suspected of
being internally corroded or have thinning areas or defective welds which a naked eye
cannot visualize.

29 | P a g e
SECTION 10 GALLERY OF JOB SERVICES

Magnetic Particle Inspection – MPI

▪ MPI is the most selected traditional method of tracing cracks; tracing surface and sub-
surface defects on component design, structures; Heat Affected Zones (HAZ) of welded
parts of pressure vessels, pressure piping and all appurtenances attached to pressurized
equipment such as boilers, heat exchangers, pressurized containers, penstock high
Pressure portion, and more.

Dye Penetrant Testing – DPT

▪ To ensure defect free welding on critical jobs, DPT is applied for every pass of weld
deposited. This is to weed out defects and other discontinuities which are to be removed
by grinding. Defects are revealed and identified by DPT when bleeding occurs on defective
portion, and comes out on the surface for removal. The Heat Affected Zones (HAZ),
where cracking might be present on heavy walls from 19.0mm and above thickness in
piping, can also be revealed by DPT. This can only be performed through proper
application, and by competent and certified level-II Technicians for this discipline. NDTPISC
has a complete line of DPT chemicals and certified Inspectors to perform this method of
NDT.

Sponge Jet-Blasting
The third option for effective removal of polyurea and rubberized coatings is Sponge Media
composite abrasives. Like ordinary dry abrasive blasting, Sponge Media is propelled to the surface
using pressurized air. This composite abrasive includes the one of many abrasive types/grits and
a sponge matrix, which allows for the removal of polyurea and rubber coatings quickly and with
little dust generation. Sponge (Media) Blasting does not melt or burn these flexible coatings
and also profiles the surface in the one step. Coating thickness can impact removal time, but
coatings of more than 12,5 mm (1/2 inch) have been removed successfully with Silver 30 Sponge
Media. The technology is capable of attaining all recognized standards of surface cleanliness for
abrasive blasting and can produce surface profiles of 150-plus microns (6- plus mils). It is widely
used on alloys, concrete and composite materials. It is also a documented surface preparation
solution authorized for use in many of the world's armed services

34 | P a g e
SECTION 10 GALLERY OF JOB SERVICES

Holiday Testing
▪ A non-destructive testing method which is mainly applied to check for discontinuities
such as pinholes, porosity or flaws in insulated coatings on conductive substrates. Lack
of continuity of coating causes premature failure, which can be very expensive to repair,
and may lead to possible stoppage in production. In certain circumstances, an air pocket
can represent a substantial portion of the total thickness, and thus cause a weak point,
even though the coating is continuous.

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

▪ PMI is applied to verify, confirm and guarantee the specifications and compositions of a
material. This is especially helpful when material certificates are missing or unclear to
clients and owners. PMI is particularly used for high quality metals like stainless steel and
high alloy metals.
