The story about evil monk, Dhajavihera

The Buddha told this story in Jetavana

Long ago, when king Bramadatta was the king of Varassani. At that time, there were many
monks who practiced magic, then they used magic to do what ordinary people could not do,
such as they could create a rain; travelling at night and nobody could catch them.

One day, a monk used his magic to go to the palace of the king at night, and he raped the
queen many times. The queen told the king that she was raped at night by a magician, and then
the king sent many soldiers to guard the queen at night. But the magician still could go inside
and raped the queen with his power, and nobody could catch him.

King Bramadatta was very angry to know that his wife was raped again and again, but he could
not catch the criminal. Then he said to the queen, ‘’ Can you make a token on him, so we can
find him easily?’’

‘’Yes, I will try. Sir.’’

In the next night, the magician came to the room of queen to rape the queen again. After he
satisfied his desire, he left the palace by his power, and of course, nobody could touch him. But
he did not know that the queen made a signal on his back while he was raping her.

The next day’s morning, Bramadatta sent soldiers to go around to catch a magician or monk
who had fingermarks with red color on his back. Some soldiers went to the cemetery of the city,
and they saw an ascetic monk praying to Atman. The magician saw the soldiers running forward
to him, he thought that his crime was detected by the king. So he used his power to fly in the
sky and he disappeared in the air.

Soldiers came back to the palace and they told the king everything that he saw. King
Bramadatta was very angry, ‘’ this is the practice of ascetic magics. At day time, they wear ropes
and behave as they are devoted all their time to practice, but in the night, they go around to
rape women.’’ So he expelled all the monks out of Kasi.

After a few year of expelling all monks from Kasi, people seemed to become greedy and stingy.
Because, they did get chance to study with morality with monks. On the heaven, Sakka, king of
gods, knew that king bramadatta had got stuck in his wrong view, ‘’ I have to help the king and
people in Kasi.’’ And then he flew to a cave named Nandamula to meet Pretyakabuddha there,
and he asked Pretyakabuddha to help him.

Sakka disguised himself as a young and good looking monk, and he took the bowl of the
Pretyakabuddha and accompanied him to go around Kasi, then they stopped at the palace. In
front of the main gate of the palace’s king, he used his power to stand in the air, but he still
took the bowl for Pretyakabuddha.
Some soldiers informed the king about the appearance of two strange monks in front of the
palace. The king stood by the window of his room and asked the young monk, ‘’ You look very
handsome and intelligent, but Why do you have to serve that old monk? Please let me know
your name.’’

Sakka quoted a verse as the answer to the king:

Beings of heaven never say their name to human being

And not let human if they are gods

But only me, can let you know

Sakka, king of heaven I am.’’

The king continued to asked,

‘’ you have perfect body

Standing and walking in solemnly

Sakka, what is the cause of those

Let me know clearly.’’

Sakka smiled and then continued to quoted another verse,

‘’ Paying respect to masters and saints

In present life, walking and standing will be solemn

Will be renowned and respect by others

In the afterlife, will reborn in the heaven.’’

King Bramadatta was enlightened,

‘’ As the moon is out of the cloud

I was enlightened by your talk

Sakka, king of heaven

I will try to do good from now.’’

Sakka quoted another verse to encourage the king ,

‘’ Try to do good

And accumulate two merit and wisdom

King, you know what to do

Let do what you can bring benefit to others.’’

King Bramadatta was very happy, ‘’ I was out of anger but talking with you Sakka. I vow to do
what you have taught.’’ And then went down to pay respect to the Pretyakabuddha and Sakka.

Pretyakabuddha showed his power; he crossed his legs in lotus posture and he sat in the air.
And then he gave a dharma talk to Bramadatta, ‘’ Sir, magic is not the way to practice the mind,
and the magician is not a monk. So don’t think that all monks are good or bad, or all magicians
are bad.’’ During this time , pretyakabuddha was teaching the king . Sakka also stood in the air
and Gave Dharma to soldiers, maidens, and ordinary people around the palace. After that Sakka
and pretyakabuddha came back to their places. Bramadatta allowed monks to come back to
Kasi.

King Bramadatta was Ananda, Sakka was Buddha.
