MMA 101: ANALYTIC GEOMETRY CAT ONE DATE : 06/08/2021

Instruction: Attempt ALL questions.

1. (i) Find the equation to those tangents to the circle x2 + y 2 = 2 which are parallel to the line
4x − 3y = 0.
(ii) A circle which passes through the origin cuts off intercepts of length 4 and 6 units on the positive
X and Y -axes respectively. Find the equation of the circle.
(iii) Given two parallel lines L1 : 4y − 3x = 3 and L2 : 4y = 3x − 28. Determine the distance between
the lines L1 and L2 and the equation of a line that passes midway between them.

2. The equation of an ellipse on the xy−plane is given by 9x2 + 25y 2 − 36x − 50y + 60 = 0. Find the
centre, the coordinates of the vertices, the foci, the eccentricity and the directrices of the ellipse.

Identify the conics given below:

(i) 9
x + 25
y − 23 x − 8

= 0.

(ii) 8x2 − 15xy + 6y 2 + x − 8y + 12 = 0

(iii) xy = 2

(iv) 9x2 − 12xy + 4y 2 + 6x − 8y = 0.
