Captain Henry “Randy” Stroud

Harding Concordia Lodge #345
Henry “Randy” Stroud was drafted into the army in June of 1967 during the Vietnam War. He was sent to Ft.
Know, KY for basic training and completed individual training at Ft. Dix, NJ. Upon completion he was assigned
to the 172nd Infantry Brigade at Ft. Richardson, Alaska in October of 1967.
In April of 1968 he entered Officer Candidate School and graduated as an infantry officer. After graduating as
an officer, he completed Airborne Training at Ft. Benning, GA. In October of 1968 he was sent to Ft. Bragg, NC
and assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group and was trained as a Green Beret.
In June of 1968, Randy was reassigned to the 5th SFGA and sent to Nha-Trang, Republic of Vietnam. The 5th
SFGA that he was working with was responsible for all Special Forces personnel in Vietnam. The 5th SFGA was
involved in deploying Detachments throughout South Vietnam. Eventually Randy was assigned to detachment
B-24 headquartered in Kontum, RVN. His detachment had command/control over six A-Detachments that
operated as follows:
1. A-241 – Polei-Kleng
2. A-242 – Dak-Pek
3. A-243 – Plei-Me
4. A-244 – Ben-Het
5. A-245 – Dak-Seang
6. A-246 – Mang-Buk
These Detachments operated and maintained remote facilities (camps) in South Vietnam. More specifically
they operated along the borders of South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Their purpose was to perform
search and interdiction operations with the goal of preventing North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces from
infiltrating and conducting military operations in the South Vietnam. Each A-Detachment group in the area
consisted of approximately 12 American Soldiers and 250 South Vietnamese forces. During his time (3 Tours)
in this area Randy served as Commander of Detachments A-246 and A-241 while also serving as Civil Affairs/
Psyops Staff Officer over the entire B-24 Detachment.
During his service in Vietnam, Randy was awarded several Commendations as follows: 3 Bronze Stars, The
Air Medal, The Air Medal for Heroism, The Army Commendation Medal, The Army Commendation Medal for
Heroism, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. The following descriptions
come directly from the US Military transcripts that accompanied each commendation.
Bronze Stars
1. For meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic
of Vietnam: Captain Stroud distinguished himself from 20 October to 30 November 1970 while assigned
as the S-4 Office! of Detachment B-24. During this period all the camps and the 4th Mobile Strike Force
Battalion we-re involved in conversion from Civilian Irregular Defense Group to ARVN Rangers. Captain
Stroud ensured that all aspects of conversion, logistical support, and subsequent phasedown were
handled in a professional manner without any difficulties. He conducted numerous visits to the remote
camps to ensure that conversion and backloading schedules were handled properly and all deadlines
were met. Captain Stroud ensured that all equipment remaining at the camps was in excellent functioning
order or was replaced. In addition he was instrumental in determining the equipment to be transferred
to the ARVN Rangers and advisors remaining at the B-24 compound, as a tactical command post. Captain
Stroud’s meritorious achievements were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and
reflect great credit upon himself, Special Forces· and the United States Army.
June 2021

2. For meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic
of Vietnam: ·First Lieutenant Stroud distinguished himself from 8 to 27 May 1970. Early in April 1970, a multi-
regimental size enemy force launched a massive assault on Camp Dak Seang, and isolated Special Forces
border camp in the central highlands of Vietnam. Unable to overrun the determined defenders, the enemy laid
siege to the camp and mounted a similar offensive on Camp Dak Pek, a sister camp to the north of Dak Seang.
Early in May the Forward Tactical Command Post, located in Tan Canh in support of the embattled camps, was
relocated at Camp Ben Het, a neighboring Special Forces border camp south of Camp Dak Seang. Lieutenant
Stroud was assigned the mission of commanding this Forward Tactical Command Post during the period that
it was located at Camp Ben Het. Working round-the-clock he coordinated artillery, air, logistical and ground
support for both Camp Dak Seang and Dak Pek as well as the two Mobile Strike Force units that were deployed
in the vicinity of the two camps. The efficient' and effective support that was rendered to the "A" camps and the
Mobile Strike Force units was a tribute to Lieutenant Stroud’s organizational talents and professional manner.
Lieutenant Stroud’s notable achievements were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service
and reflect great credit upon himself, Special Forces and the United States Army.
3. He distinguished himself by outstandingly meritorious service in connection with military operations against a
hostile force in the. Republic of Vietnam. During the period 8 July 1969 to July 1970 he consistently manifested
exemplary professionalism and initiative in obtaining outstanding results. His rapid assessment and solution
of numerous problems inherent in a combat environment greatly enhanced the allied effectiveness against
a determined and aggressive enemy. Despite many adversities, he invariably performed his duties in a
resolute and efficient manner. Energetically applying his sound judgement and extensive knowledge, he
has contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of the United States mission in the Republic of
Vietnam. His loyalty, diligence and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military'
service and reflect great credit upon himself, and the United States Army.
The Air Medal
He distinguished himself by meritorious achievement, while participating in sustained aerial flight, in support of
combat ground forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During the period 7 AUGUST 1969 TO 10 JUNE 1970 he actively
participated in more than twenty-five aerial missions over hostile territory in support of counterinsurgency
operations. During all of these flights, he displayed the highest order of air discipline and acted in accordance with
the best traditions of the service. By his determination to accomplish his mission, in spite of the hazards inherent in
repeated aerial flights over hostile territory, and by his outstanding degree of professionalism and devotion to duty,
he has brought credit upon himself, his organization, and the United States Army.
The Air Medal For Heroism
Dates of Service: 13 April 1970 to 1'7 April 19'10
Theater: Republic of Vietnam
Authority: By direction of the President under the provision of executive order
Reason: For heroism while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam; First Lieutenant Stroud
distinguished himself by heroism during the period 13-17 April 1970 while serving as radio relay and forward
observer of Camp Dak Pek a remote Special Forces border camp in the Central Highlands. Lieutenant Stroud actively
participated in the relaying of all essential communications transmission, adjusting mortar fire and firing M79 and
WP spotter rounds at an enemy's mortar positions for Camp Dak Pek while being-subjected to intense hostile
ground fire by an unknown enemy force determined to overrun the camp. Lieutenant Stroud always displayed the
highest air discipline and the highest manner of professionalism. Despite the grave personal danger, he performed
his mission in an exemplary manner. His heroic actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the military
service and reflect great credit upon himself, Special Forces and the United States Army.

The Army Commendation Medal

For meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of
Vietnam: First Lieutenant Stroud distinguished himself from 20 June to 15 July 1970 while assigned as the Special
Forces Detachment Commander at Camp Polei Kleng, Detachment A-241, Company B, 5th Special Forces Group
(Airborne), as the camp was going into the process of conversion to an ARVN Ranger border surveillance camp.
Realizing the critical need for cooperation and collaboration in the involved process of conversion, Lieutenant
Stroud immediately took steps to improve the working relationship between the USASF and VNSF personnel. His
previous experience as conversion officer at Camp Mang Buk and his proven ability to work in close harmony with
indigenous forces made Lieutenant Stroud an incalculable asset in effecting the conversion of Camp Polei Kleng.
Under his guidance and leadership the conversion process was begun smoothly and the counterpart relationship
between the USASF team and all the indigenous forces at Camp Polei Kleng showed significant improvements.
First Lieutenant Stroud’s mature judgment, thorough knowledge and understanding of his advisory role and
notable achievements were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit
upon himself, Special Forces and the United States Army.
The Army Commendation Medal for Heroism
For heroism in connection with ground operation against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: First
Lieutenant Stroud distinguished himself by heroism on 27 September 1969, while serving as a Special Forces
Advisor at Camp Strike Force company on a search and interdiction mission outside Camp Mang Buk. As the unit
moved to secure an LZ for the extraction of captured VC and weapons they came in contact with an entrenched
VC squad securing an isolated village area. Organizing his element to ensure adequate coverage of all trails
out of the area, Lieutenant Stroud led an assault against the heavy volume of fire coming from the enemy unit.
After having overrun the VC stronghold killing three VC, Lieutenant Stroud proceeded to secure the LZ for the
extraction of the POW’s and equipment. While waiting for the arrival of the aircraft, the company again came
under harassing enemy small arms fire. Lieutenant Stroud, repeatedly exposing himself, organized his element to
effectively neutralizer the enemy action and accomplished the extraction without sustaining a friendly casualty.
Lieutenant Stroud’s heroic actions were keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect
great credit upon himself, Special Forces, and the United State Army.

Henry “Randy” Stroud was honorably discharged on 9/28/1970 at the rank of Captain in the Green Berets. He
currently lives in Seven Hills at 434 Harvest Lane with his wife Joanne. They have one daughter, Samantha, and
two grandchildren, Hannah and Evan. All his above achievements come from official record and show the great
character and bravery of a wonderful man that I am proud to call family.

Brother Henry Stroud was presented the Patriot Award from The Grand Lodge on May 22.
