COMPARISONS OF ADJECTIVES (ma course)

Grammar

1. Equal comparison( so s¸nh ngang b»ng)

+) BE + AS + ADJ + AS ( OBJECT/ S+ AUX)

Eg. I am as tall as Peter

She worked as hard as me.

-)BE + NOT + AS /SO + ADJ + AS ( OBJECT/ S+ AUX)

Eg. Tommy wasn’t as hard working as his brother.

The weather today isn’t as hot as yesterday.

*) THE SAME (+NOUN) + AS

Eg. Your car is the same as mine.

He is of the same age as me.

2. Comparative and superlative comparisons (so s¸nh h¬n kÐm & so s¸nh cao nhÊt)
2.1. Usage ( cách sử dụng):
- So sánh hơn kém: tính từ so sánh hơn kém dùng để so sánh 2 danh từ ( 2 người, 2 sự vật, hiện tượng)
- So sánh cao nhất: tính từ so sánh cao nhất dùng để so sánh nhiều hơn 2 danh từ ( 2 người, 2 sự vật, hiện
tượng)

SHORT ADJS
1. Hầu hết ADJ + ER + THAN THE + ADJ + EST
TALL/ SHORT/ This boy is taller than his brother. This boy is the tallest in his family.

2. Có tận cùng là E ADJ-E + R + THAN THE + ADJ-E + ST
LARGE/ LATE/ She was later than we had expected. This room is the largest in the house.

3. Qui tắc x 2 ADJ (x2 final consonant) + ER + THAN THE + ADJ (x2 final consonant) + EST
Hot/ big/ …. Summer is hotter than autumn. Summer is the hottest season in Vietnam.

4. Các adj 2 âm tiết ADJ ( Y-> I) + ER + THAN THE + ADJ ( Y-> I) + EST
có tận cùng là This exercise is easier than that one. Today is the happiest day in my life.

Thêm vào trước so sánh hơn kém, nhấn mạnh cho so sánh hơn kém.

*) a little/ a bit: hơi hơi, hơn 1 chút

Canada is a bit/ a little bigger than the USA. ( Canada lớn hon Mỹ 1 chút)

*) much/ far/ a lot: hơn rất nhiều

A car is much/ far/ a lot more expensive than a motorbike

4. By far:

Thêm vào trước so sánh cao nhất, nhấn mạnh cho so sánh cao nhất.

As a mother tongue, Chinese has by far the most population.
