UNHEALTHY AND UNSAFE ACTS IN THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

AS ELECTRICAL PRACTITIONERS

• Unsafe Acts and Conditions

1. Horse Playing. This behavior

includes chasing, running, practical jokes,
and pranks in the workplace. Although, it
may sound fun, however, it can lead to low
work productivity, compromised working
environment and even serious work injuries
which can be potentially fatal in some cases.

2. Octopus Wiring. Good quality wiring

that conforms to safety standards is vital
for safety. Octopus Wiring is dangerous
because if the total current that passes
through the wires exceeds the indicated
rating, it could create too much heat and
start a fire.

3. Non-Wearing of Safety
Gloves. Wearing electrical safety
gloves when performing a certain
work is very essential. Without
the rubber insulating glove, there
will be no primary defense to
protect against contact with any
energized components or
electrical lines.
4. Wet conditions. One should never
operate in wet locations for the
reason that water greatly increases
the risk of electrocution especially if
one equipment has damaged
insulation.

5. Using Defective Tools/Equipment.

The right tool can make all the difference
when it comes to completing a project.
They make the difference between done
and done right. The use of defective
equipment can lead to a range of head
and body injuries, including injuries to
the eyes and face. For example,
electrical equipment that does not come
with proper insulation can cause
electrocution, burns, and electric shock.

6. Overhead Power Lines. They carry high voltages and

can cause severe burns to the workers. Any contact with
overhead power lines can result in electrocution. It is
therefore important to maintain distance from the
overhead power lines and install safety barriers.

7. Exposed
Electrical Parts.
Exposed
electrical parts may include open power
distribution units, temporary lightning or
detached insulation parts. These parts can
cause shocks and burns. To avoid this, the
electrical parts with proper guarding
mechanism must be secured and exposed
parts shall be repaired immediately.
8. Improper Storage area of
Tools/Equipment. Numerous of
injuries are result of improperly
handling and storing of materials. Also,
smart storage can save the burden of
purchasing a new tools /machine. To
sustain the tools and keep them in
good condition, one should take the
proper steps to make sure the metal
tools maintain their durability and do
not accumulate rust.

• Unhealthy Acts and Conditions

1. Smoking in Non-smoking Area. Secondhand

smoke harms not just yourself but as well as the people
around you including your co-worker. Overtime, it is
associated with health problems such as lung cancer,
heart diseases and breathing problems. Additionally, the
lit cigarette that was thrown away in the area might
contribute to the hazard of exposed electrical parts of
unfinished work.

2. Working while on the Influence of

Drugs or Alcohol. Drinking at
harmful level while attending work
leads to reduced fitness for work and
an increased risk of injury plus lower
quality and quantity of work
accomplished. In worst cases, it may
even lead to absenteeism or loss of
esteem and skills.
