Below the bias menu, two values are shown. The top value is the

bias reading. This design allows visibility of the actual bias as it
settles into the desired value. While this settling occurs, the value
will show with yellow characters. When the bias reading has settled

Saving Measurement Data to a USB Flash Drive

The File tab allows for the export of measurement data that
appears on the Add List. Operation is similar to that of popular word
processing programs. Shown on the tab is the name of the current
working file, as well as New and Save buttons. If the file has not
been previously saved, the name “untitled” appears. A star (*) is
shown as a suffix if new data has been added to the Add List since
the last save occurred.

Before attempting to save a file, connect a USB flash drive to one of

the two available USB ports on the SuperMAX. Tap the Save button
to bring up the following prompt.

Tap the file name box to bring up an on-screen keypad for file name
entry. Tap in the desired file name and tap OK to continue. If the save
operation was successful, the file name entered will be displayed on
the file tab, and .CSV will be written to the USB flash drive.

For any issues using a USB flash drive, see the Troubleshooting
section of this manual.

Subsequent save operations are performed by tapping the save

button. If the save operation is successful, the star (*) will disappear
from the end of the file name.

NOTE: When saving a file, measurement data from both channels will
be saved regardless of which mode (Channel 1, Channel 2, Channel
1/2) the SuperMAX is set to. For example, if compiling measurement
data when in the Channel 1 mode Add List, this data will still be
shown on the “Data Ch. 1” tab when switching to Channel 1/2 mode.

For an explanation of the exported file format, see page 30.

Starting a New File

To clear the Add List and start a new measurement data file, tap the
New button. If the Add List contains un-saved data, a prompt will
display with the option to save this data before continuing. A new
untitled file will be started with an empty Add List within the Data tab.

Scintillator Measurement Mode

The Scintillator Measurement mode is exclusively used for acquiring Attaching a Scintillator to the SuperMAX

on the SuperMAX and connect the Channel 2 scintillator Channel
2 output to the Channel 2 connector on the SuperMAX as shown.

Selecting a Scintillator Baseline

Scintillator Measurement Interface
Upon entering the Scintillator Measurement mode, a prompt will
appear to select a scintillator baseline. The interface is very similar to the General Measurement Interface
and shares its primary functions such as three modes of charge
collection, the Add List and USB flash drive saving. However, there
are differences which are outlined as follows:

• Range of operation: Current generated by a scintillator is

relatively low and as such the range is fixed to the SuperMAX
low range (0-500 pA).

• Bias voltage: Use of bias voltage is disabled in any scintillator

mode and the option is not present on the interface.

• Measurement display: The output from an Exradin scintillator

is based on a combination of two inputs and a pair of baseline
factors. This combined reading is shown in the center of the
display, however for reference, the raw rate values for each
channel are also displayed above the combined value.

• Temperature/pressure correction: As a scintillator is temperature

A scintillator baseline must be selected to proceed. For information on and pressure independent within the recommended operating
how to create and manage scintillator baselines, see the Scintillator range, temperature and pressure correction is not needed.
Baseline Library section of this manual.
• Setup and Data tabs: Due to less information required on each,
Tap the desired baseline and tap [OK] to proceed. the Setup and Data tabs are combined in this mode.

Beyond these differences, the functionality for collecting and

saving rate and charge measurements is identical to the general
measurement mode. Refer to the general measurement mode
sections of this manual for specific instructions.

Baseline Types and Data Requirements

There are two baseline types: Relative and Dose. Dose type requires all the data of relative, plus data from one additional setup as well as
a reading acquired from an ion chamber independent of the baseline process. The specific measurements required for each are outlined
below:

NOTE: If creating a dose baseline, ion chamber data will need to

be acquired and prepared in advance of the following procedure.

1. If creating a relative baseline, skip to step 2. For a dose baseline,

tap the [Set Dose] button. From the Enter Type and Value
window, select Dose, enter the pre-measured/calculated ion
chamber value and appropriate unit.

7. Once completed for the active data set, select the next data set
and repeat steps 2-6. For either a relative or dose baseline, at
least 1 measurement is needed for each 40x40 cm data set/
configuration. For a dose baseline, at least 1 additional reading
is needed for the 10x10 cm data set.

8. Once the data requirements have been met (at least 1

measurement for each data set/configuration), this will be
indicated by the [Calculate Baseline] button becoming enabled.

2. Setup the scintillator and calibration slab using the desired

configuration and connect the scintillator to the SuperMAX.

3. Select the desired Active Data Set ensuring it matches the

configuration matching the setup from step 1. “10x10 cm min

1. Ensure the data requirements are met by following the

instructions in the previous section. If so, tap the [Calculate

2. Gain and CLR factors will be populated based on the

measurements acquired. Note, that values shown here are for
demonstrational purposes only and do not represent actual
readings.
4. With no beam present, ensure a stable value for the rate
measurement. When the readings are stable, perform a system
zero by tapping the [Zero] button.

5. Select the desired charge collection method from Timed,

Continuous and Trigger. For each setup procedure, at least
one reading is required to complete the baseline calculation,
however multiple readings for each can be acquired and are
averaged automatically. The timing selection and dose delivered
should be consistent for each reading acquired. At least 15-30
seconds or 100 MU is recommended.

4. The Scintillator Baseline Summary window will appear.

5. Enter the serial number for the scintillator used as well as a description. A description may include information about what energy was
delivered or any useful information to help identify this baseline in the future.

6. Tap [OK] to save the baseline to the SuperMAX database. This baseline will now be available for selection in the Baseline Measurement
mode.

NOTE: Baselines cannot be edited once created as all readings for a baseline should be acquired from one measurement session. See
the Exradin Scintillator user manual for more information about how frequently a new baseline should be acquired for a given scintillator.

Baseline Factor Algorithms

The following formulas are used to calculate baseline factors:

CLR = (SC1MAX40 – SC1MIN40) / (SC2MAX40 – SC2MIN40)

Gain (relative) = 1 / (SC1MIN40 – SC2MIN40 * CLR)

Gain (dose) = Dose10 / (SC1MIN10 – SC2MIN10 * CLR)

Variable Definition:

• CLR: Cherenkov Light Ratio

• Gain (relative): Gain value used for performing relative measurements
• Gain (dose): Gain value used for performing dose measurements
• SC1MAX40: Scintillator Channel 1 measurement, max fiber configuration, 40x40 cm² field size
