Standard Activity 8.33B - Community Relations Interviews

After making some phone calls and emailing some members at the Cabell County Schools Board

of Education Office, I was able to research who are the most influential groups and individuals in the

community.

Concerning communication, there is a top down approach that occurs with communication

coming from our Superintendent and then dispersed by our communications director, Jedd Flowers. This

information is shared through a 2-way system that is almost flawless. If there is an important

announcement district wide, there is a system where all students and staff receive an email and a phone

call explaining the announcement. Text messages are also dispersed to those who have not asked to not

receive these notifications. I think this is flawless because it covers all basis. If there is a snow day,

everyone receives a call, text, and email communicating school is canceled.

When interviewing principals at Huntington High, they feel that the mass call-out system is the

best approach because it gives our county clear direction on expectations. Within Huntington High

School, most important information is disseminated through email. We also have daily announcements

communicated through our intercom first thing in the morning and these announcements are repeated

in the afternoon to all students and staff.

After conducting the district and Huntington High School’s communication system, I would only

make one recommendation. It is my opinion that Mr. Jedd Flowers needs an assistant. With all the extra

money for COVID, and the many public relations/communications ways he has been pulled this year and

last….I believe he is long overdue a partner in crime and someone that can help lesson the load for him.
